amzn.to/2soKfuw
In this video, I will take a look at the WEN 3921 16" scroll saw. I will do some comparisons with higher-end saws. I will show you some tips to make this saw easier to use. I'll also give you an overall impression of how well it works.

*This is my second WEN tool and they are both great **MyBest.Tools** I needed to do some trim work around the house and needed a scroll saw for the intricate work. No complaints so far.*

I can't thank you enough for all this info. This is seriously one of the best posts I've found. I appreciate the comparisons of the makers directions vs yours. The example of the more high end machine is also really helpful. I've been guilty of wanting to give up on a hobby because the entry level tools were difficult to work and so I assumed the higher end tools would be as well. Your blade changing on both machines reminds me not to assume all tools are so challenging. I can't wait to get started in this. Thank you again for sharing this.

I used a hundred dollar Ryobi for over 20 years. Used and abused; it got the job done. A few years ago I finally upgraded, and it was worth it for the ease of blade changing alone! However, I don't regret starting with a "cheap" saw one bit. I learned a lot and I got more than my money's worth out of it.

Hi Steve so I've had this saw for about 1 yr to 1 yr & halve and I've learned more from you than I thought I I could else where. By my luck my saw didn't come with the upper & lower pinless clamps since I bought it second hand. Also I went into WEN's website and they are sold out so ill be waiting on that. Very informative video. I bought one last summer and just got around to tinkering with it. The blade head information was great. I unboxed mine and after seeing all the videos was fearing the pinned blades. Now I can swap over to real blades and not have to cough up a bunch of money on an upgrade so soon. Thanks for all the downloadable patterns as well. Really going to help with making clocks.

i picked up a Dremel 1680 variable speed for 75 dollars and it seems well made and is very heavy. It uses both pined and plane end blades. I had to derust the table but it works great now. On the 1680 the cover under the table opens back on hinges which allows easy access without taking screws out. Thanks for making and sharing this video. I'm looking forward to starting some small projects.

What great tips!!! Got this saw as a gift, knew it was a cheaper model, but couldn't wait. Except for larger cuts, fretwork was impossible with the pinned blades. Actually like being able to use both. The magnet tip was gold! Although the magnet doesn't stay in place, it's no problem placing it on and off especially with that cowling out of the way.. I've gotten pretty quick with taking the top adapter on and off. Followed every suggestion. I can't imagine figuring out all of this on my own. Thank you!!!!

I have an old Dremel that is about the same saw. The clamp hangers on my saw have a piece of metal, like a spring, on top and bottom. It holds the blade clamps on the hangers. Looks like it would be easy enough to remove the screw on the bottom hanger and put a thin piece of metal on, then the hanger then put it back on the machine. That would keep the hanger from falling off when tension is removed. I also bought several extra blade clamps. I keep one on the top arm of the saw and put the others on the blades I plan to use. When I change a blade all I do is release the tension and remove the center plate, pop the blade clamp off the bottom hanger and pop the next blade in. I leave the top hanger on the arm and hold the blade while bringing the arm down, guide the blade into the clamp and tighten the screw.

I was wondering how those inexpensive saws work. There is several look-a-likes so it is confusing. I actually started out with a good saw because I was in need of one. I bought the Delta variable speed 20" C arm it is a production saw and works great. Like you I have a collection of saws I don't really need but I like the variety. I have a Craftsman 18" the DeWalt 788 type one, a Hegner and an RBI HAWK which I really love. Good review.

I like Steve he is really good! I have a scheppach it’s the same scroll saw just rebranded, it came as a package deal, foot control, variable speed and a cable attachment to use for grinding and engraver with a small box of grinding wheels, sanding drums and discs, it was too good to pass up, it works fine but as Steve said it has a few limitations, if I ever need a replacement I would probably go for an Excalibur and definitely with a foot pedal, I hoped this helps anyone else, it’s still a great entry level saw

Recent experience with a similar $100 saw has largely taken the wind out of my sails for this hobby : when a pinless blade slipped out of the clamping system, I re-tightened it, and then the screw inside the clamping device snapped/broke inside the clamp, so I had to return the saw to the store where I bought it. The solution of course is to buy a high-end saw, but these cost about 10-times as much as a DIY-store saw. I don’t think that it would be cost-prohibitive to equip a saw like this with an easy-to-use clamping system, such as the ones used by Pegas or Hegner. That would make the entry into this hobby much easier for beginners, and would avoid the hassle that the awkward clamping system has caused to me, and surely to many others too.

Great detailed tutorial. One thing I have noticed with the budget scroll saws the aluminum table contributes to more vibration . Most budget tables have a punched hole that raises and deforms the surface of the table I.e. the opening is the high point. To check take a straight edge lay it across the top of the table to verify. Also the blower blows the fine dust towards you. Wear a mask ? Wish it blew the dust away from you.

Good video. I have this saw in Australia which is marketed under a different name. I have struggled with the blade installation and have taken the side plate cover off too. the main problem I have is the 2 pinless clamps having set screws to tighten the blade into the holder which means I have to use a set screw wrench and is very awkard to say the lease. The thumb screws on your model would make it much easier to insert the blade and I will see if they are available in Australia. There is an Olson conversion kit that has a much better clamp system sells is Australia for around $40Aus. I like the idea of the magnet and will give that a try tomorrow. My main SC a Hegner gave up the ghost today so I have to percivere with this one until I get some more cash to buy a better one.

Have you tried using the blade setting fixture on the top arm? Looks like an easy way to set the same/correct blade length each time you replace the blade. Unfortunately, my Harbor Freight version of the Wen doesn't have the fixture.

Excellent review. Blade change seems far too difficult but it is a entry level saw.

I use a 5/32 inch hole for pinned blades. Normal hole for pinless blades is "2/32" so the hole for pinned blades is not that much larger given the patterns being cut out.

I’m curious why you didn’t use the clamp/blade guides on top of the machine. My old Delta had those and they were much quicker than fiddling with changing pinless blades by hand.
