A couple of tricks that I use are to photocopy my patterns in red. It makes it easier to follow the lines. The other trick is to dip the top end of my blades in whiteout. That way you know which way to install the blade.
So Earlier this week i asked a few scroll noob questions and got the answers I needed. That said I also bought a Foot Switch, Prior to seeing this video, and a foot switch needs to be part of the starting kit, It gave me the control I needed and allowed me to focus on feeding the wood properly. If you don't have a foot switch get one you will be glad you did

Ken, I agree 100%. I have also been scrolling for decades and my list would be awfully close to yours. Funny thing, the 2” square. For years and years I used the method of squaring blade where you make a cut in a piece of wood then see if the cut lines up when you move the piece of wood behind the blade. One day while looking through a catalog I saw a 2” square for just a few dollars. I bought it and it has never been away from my saw since. Sure does work better than any other method. LOL. I used to use a similar method Paul. I would cut a large interior cut and make sure that it slid perfectly in and out of the kerf from both directions. I love your videos they are very detailed and Helpful. I decided to take up the hobby of using a scroll saw when I was 68, exactly 1 year ago. I only wish I had have taken it up years ago. Kenny as someone who shares your passion for gadgets, tools and robust organisation I really enjoyed this video. Loved the magnetic label and the stand storage ideas - ideas I intend to imitate. Whilst I appreciate it's a matter of preference, I would have added a ' right height stool' to my list of accessories - but then again that might be an age thing! I watched a video recently where someone made sanding sticks by glueing sandpaper to old blades and mounting them in the saw.. I haven’t tried it yet but the person on the video said that it works well. I loved your dramatic countdown. And I think you have some great tips.

Nice video ! I also made a wooden square that fits over the wingnut that tightens the blade. It is much easier on your hand when you are tightening the blade

Hi Kenny, I was waiting for it, and I totally agree with you. Foot pedal is #1 with me too, and a good quality magnifier w/light is definitely #2. I wouldn't want to cut w/o either of them, as they make such a huge difference! I also liked your idea of using the magnetic strips to hold/label the used blades on your saw, and will start doing that...it's much better than what I'm doing now and will eliminate any confusion later, so thank you for that tip. One thing you didn't mention was using files to clean up edges and flats. Small detailing files and larger files work great for cleaning up any fuzzies or cuts that might be a little rough or slightly misshapen, and it's much faster (and cheaper) than trying to use sandpaper. Just use the roughness of the file to match the job you are trying to accomplish. I know this is an older video but I always enjoy your show, and I always learn something. Thanks!

Thanks for the tips. Using sanding strips was the least useful tip for me and I agree the the foot switch was the best tip. One tip that did not make the list was dust collection. I have a small cyclone dust collector that comes on when the scroll saw is turned on, reducing dust by a significant amount. These tips are all helpful. I also agree that working on a scroll saw is relaxing and fun.
Duct collection is one of those grey areas when it comes to scroll saws Tom and I may have to do a show at a later date to show how to combat the dust problem with them. I like your idea. Thanks for the kind words on the show and for tuning in. I truly appreciate it.
Instead of a 2" square I made a template from a 2" x 4" x 1/4" piece at wood that I have cut a vertical saw kerf in 90° to the table. I, then, slide the template behind the blade to see if it slips into the kerf cleanly. If it does, I know it is 90° to the table. Quick, simple and free.
And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Tools in the shop don't have to be store bought. As long as they do the job, that's all that matters. Thanks for tuning in and for chiming in with your method. It's appreciated.

Yes. Enjoyed very much! Going to buy a light/magnifier. So when you talk of sanding the back of the blade I am thinking that you literally mean simply rounding off the squared back of that saw blade. That is exactly what I mean with regards to rounding the blades. The back edges are quite sharp and the burrs dig into the stock which cutting, causing extra blade drift. Rounding the back edges of the blade will help to reduce the drifting. I'm not so sure that you sewing machine pedal will work Joy but there's no harm in trying it. Sewing machine pedals are generally variable speed where you speed up the machine, the more you press the pedal. The scroll saw speed control is obtained by the saw's controls and the pedals are strictly a contact to turn it either on or off. I hope it does work for you though. That would be awesome. The foot switch is a momentary contact that would allow you to kill the power to the saw right away upon breaking a blade. Don't let it scare you Verna. Blades are a consumable in scrolling and from time to time, they break. It will always make your heart jump a little when it happens but it is definitely nothing to be concerned or frightened of. Great video as always and some great tips. No 5, I used the magnetic material to make a table protector. You can make a smaller hole for the blade this way too and works well (I put this to SDGood on RU-vid and he featured it on a video but did not give me a mention. Grrrrrrr). Plenty of marks on my magnetic protector but the table underneath is perfect as new. No 2. Hate my glasses. Bought the work light/magnifier and wow what a difference, I agree with you completely. No 1. In the UK my supplier has told me if I attach a foot pedal the 3 year warranty will be void?!?! Not sure what to say on that one. As the scroll saw was expensive I will have to live without a foot pedal, just in case. No 11. I forgot why I added this on my watch list but now I remember so will get it bought. Thanks Kenny :O)
I can't imagine a manufacturer stating that a foot pedal would void the warranty. It is no different than flicking the saw's switch on and off. It is a normally open switch, not a speed control. I could see them voiding it for a speed control but honestly, they would have no idea that you were using a foot pedal as it serves the same purpose and function as their factory switch. I like your idea of the magnetic table cover with the zero clearance type hole in it. I may have to look around for magnetic material and see if I can't make one of my own. Don't worry though, if it makes the show, I will be sure to mention you. ;) Thanks for tuning in this week. It's difficult to supply links Rita as not all accessories are compatible with all scroll saws. Amazon can be your friend in this case as to locating the accessories. As for your quilting magnifier, you can most definitely use it on your scroll saw. Depending on the scroll saw you have, you may want to clamp it to something other than your work table to avoid the saw's vibrations affecting the position of the magnifier. I hope this helps. I have a magfier. It has been a big help for weeding cut vinyl so I will for sure using it when I start using my new scroll saw. It;s also a light. need to get a foot pedal. I see most people remove the presser foot. I think I'll be too nervous to use it without. Any advise on that? I got the ryobi.
I actually recommend keeping the hold down foot in place while you are learning. It assists you in holding your stock down to the table and lets you concentrate on your control of the cut. While you still have to hold the stock down even with the hold down foot in place, you don't have to apply hardly as much pressure to do it. Don't worry about what others do Janine. You do what you are comfortable with. That's the best way to learn. If keeping the hold down foot in place make you more comfortable and confident to learn scrolling, then by all means, leave it where it is. After all, those that remove it (myself included) are actually removing a safety feature of the saw. I just prefer to get my fingers a little closer to the blade and the hold down foot prevents me from doing that. I hope this helps. re SQUARING THE TABLE, IMHO there is no need for a 2" square and its minuscule cost. To check the square of the table to the blade just take a piece of scrap wood and slide it gently onto the blade so it makes a mark. Then turn the wood over and make a second blade mark next to the first one. If the table is square with the blade the cut lines will be parallel. If the table is tilted the lines will be closer at one end than at the other end. All at the cost of a piece of scrap wood. :)
All of these accessories are merely suggestions Greg and it is up to the individual user to decide if they are the right thing for them or not. I am borrowing my wife's channel for this comment. I have been scrolling for about 15 years and make use of a lighted magnifier. I first tried a plastic molded lens & it wasn't good. Very small viewing spot. I had the opportunity to attend a Judy Gale Robert's Intarsia class where she used ground glass optic on her saws. Huge difference and worth the extra money.
That's some pretty good advice. I've never had an issue with the magnifier that I have but then again, it is a larger surface area. Maybe that makes a difference. Hi bud, can you not just mill out the hole to accommodate the sanding sticks ?? Have to agree that the foot switch has to be No.1. I'm just starting out and thinking that I WILL break a blade or 2 and this will definitely make things less stressful and dangerous to me or the machine. Cheers for all you great tips.
Milling anything on the saw would change the geometry of the mechanism and is definitely not recommended. You can pretty much prepare yourself that you WILL break multiple blades while learning the craft and it is nothing to worry about. Blades are a consumable with scroll saw work and you will go through many of them through the course of your scrolling adventures. Glad that you are enjoying the shows. Thanks for tuning in.
Great top 10 my fellow 50+er. Is that the same mag/light as the Lee Valley? Any issues? I'm new to scrolling with my $150 Craigslist Dewalt, cha-ching! Enought money left over to pimp my ride, lol.
That magnifier light was actually sold by a company called Busy Bee Tools and has since been discontinued. So the only issue is that it is no longer available. It's been awesome since I purchase it many years ago. As for the Lee Valley light, I have that one also on my bench and it's been fantastic as well with no issues. I hope this helps. About the sanding strips.... over the years I've found that the 1" section of the sanding strips that actually sands doesn't last long. Cost wise, they are VERY cost ineffective. Better to just cut pieces of sandpaper or pick up a set of tiny files from Harbor Freight for about $2, they have lasted 8 years and show no wear at all...... and, speaking of Harbor Freight, my lighted magnifier lamp from them, about $30 has also lasted years and still going strong.....Loved the video though, keep them coming....

Not a canuck myself, although having lived my first 30 or so years in Michigan and the rest, so far, up here in Alaska, the CBC was no stranger to our television set (Sat. Nights especially). Couldn't ask for better neighbors than those of the Great White North.

Their regular brand of tools (Mastercraft) can be good or bad, depending on the tool but they do offer a lifetime warranty so they have that going for them. The foot pedal would be something that you purchase. The pedal has a receptacle at the back that the saw plugs in to. Then the pedal plugs into a wall outlet. The pedal essentially now acts as a switch to turn the saw on and off. Glad that you found the show to be helpful Joe. Dust collection is a difficult thing on a scroll saw and for the most part, I have always had to fabricate my own form of dust collection while scrolling. I know the the Excalibur 21" came up with a scroll saw that had dust collection years ago but I can't say for sure if it works well or not. As for a foot rest, I'm not so sure that would be necessary but in the same context, it also couldn't hurt. The more comfortable you can be, the more you will enjoy scrolling. The list that I provide in the show is pretty much my top ten and then after that, the rest is a complete bonus. I would say a magnifying work light and a foot pedal switch are the two most important accessories for the beginner. Everything after that is gravy. Besides, you want to keep some things for birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas and that "just because" gift. LOL. 5 times can be too much if you aren't used to it. I have a great one that is only 1.75 that I use on my bench and it's perfect. It's all about personal preference Dave and what suits you best. A foot pedal, in my opinion Rafael, is an absolutely must. If you are looking for an Excalibur, you will most likely have to purchase one used as they are no longer manufactured. The are still made, using the same specifications, by King Canada and they are sold under the name Excelsior but the original Excalibur scroll saws are no longer made. Scroll saws are not well known for the their dust collection qualities Ebony. Currently, there is no dust collection on my scroll saw. Any good quality dust mask will serve you well while scrolling. Whether it be your normal disposable type that is worn in construction or a latex mask with filters, either one will work well for protecting you against the dust that a scroll saw creates. what brand is the magnifying light? I have been searching for a 7 inch like yours as the 5 seem a bit too narrow and cannot find it for the life of me! I don't really consider spray adhesive to be an accessory Nathan but more of a consumable. It's pretty much a necessity in order to get patterns attached to stock for cutting. Great suggestion though. Thanks for tuning in to the show.
I just bought a saw with stand and have a question. I like how the stand back leg is adjustable to have a good angle to work with but how do you square it away if its at an angle doesn't the saw have to level? How do you level the blade if base is angled??
The blade gets levelled or squared to the table top. If the table top is at an angle (which some are for comfort while sawing) then the blade will still get square to that "tilted" table. Anything below the table will have no effect on the squareness of the cut, as long as the blade is square to the table top work surface. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in to the show.
Of course. Scrolling is a great way to both create a project or enhance it. There are countless ways to enhance your scrolling. Chisels are a great way to do it as well as wood burning, power carvers, flocking, paint, etc. There's no limit to the projects as long as you use a bit of imagination and not be afraid to try something new. Ken, do you have a suggestion on which light magnifier version to buy? I bought an led version and it's so bright it washed out the lines in trying to see.
That must be one really bright LED light to wash out the lines. Not knowing how bright the one you have is, it's hard to give a suggestion for one that is lower. I know that I have the magnifier from Lee Valley and really like it but I'm not sure it the brightness will do the same thing or not. I would suggestion trying to reduce the brightness of the one you have. Perhaps and parchment paper filter attached to the front of it will reduce the brightness a little. I know this video is older but I’m newer to the scroll saw and found this video very helpful. Could you tell me why the sanding blades can’t be used on interior cuts, how are those different than outside cuts? 2) you mention dentals picks being helpful for small interior cuts are you wrapping a piece of sanding paper around the tools first or are the tools used as small sanding pieces? Thanks in advance
In normal interior cuts, depending on how small they are, the sanding "blades" won't fit through the cut holes, therefore they can't be used. As for the dental picks, you can use them as a scraper to take away burrs with no sanding needed. You basically use their sharp edge to scrape away any imperfections. For the most part, if you choose the correct blade for the application you are trying to accomplish, sanding should be a minimal anyway. I hope this has helped KC. Great video Kenny, i haven't got a Scroll Saw but if i did there are some good tips there for me. I'm a bit surprised that not on your list, you didn't include a good seat to sit on. I presume that doing Scroll work takes a while to do, so a nice seat to look after your butt and back would be a must for me. Barry (ENG)

Hi Kenny. Great tips. I am new to this craft and have recently bought a very basic scroll saw. The saw does not have a built in dust blower, and I now realise how important a feature this is. Do you have any suggestions (You may have covered this elsewhere) on making one. Great videos. Thank you.
Hi Julian. Thanks for contacting me. A small fan from an old computer can be hooked up to blow the dust away from your cutting, but it is a little bulky and cumbersome. A better solution would be a half decent air pump from an old fish tank. You can use the fish tank's air hose, with the pump to blow away the dust from your cutting. If you tape a piece of wire to the hose before attaching it to your scroll saw, you will be able to shape the hose and aim it where you need it. I hope this helps.
