Hi Jarred, I am a single woman full timing for many years. Every time I watch You are videos I am so impressed by how much knowledge and understanding and the ability to work with your hands and fix things you have. As for me I never understand anything you talk about, Especially today. I am so embarrassed by that fact but it is what it is. I am an artist and I was a dancer, I wasn't a mechanic nor do I understand anything about electricity volts amps anything. My question for you Jarred is, in all the years I did this in a 25 foot Itasca class C motor home. I never put on solar all I had to do was one time an electrician at a campground where I was hosting looked at what I will call the control panel and he said well no wonder you can't keep your batteries high, this RV is called a park Model. And you are using it all the time. So, this board is meant for like weekends and not using it quite often. so I went to the guy that works on my rig and he told me what you have is a 32 amp I think he said amp I don't know control panel. We're going to put in a hefty 55 amp board and that will change things so your batteries don't keep losing the power. Anyways I had that put in and problem fixed. So, I have never understood why people get so involved in all these different things when I did this for approximately 20 years and I never had problems. I didn't have solar, I just every other day ran the generator for a few hours that was it. And I was boondocking 80% of the time. I don't know what I have missed out on by not doing all these things but it never was a problem. Oh yeah, I bought a 600 watt power pack. I have no idea if that is the actual name. I loved it. Jarred, why are all these things necessary? By the way, although I don't understand what you're saying I love your videos! Thank you so much.
@stcroixman2002
@stcroixman2002 7 месяцев назад
To answer your question...all of these things are not necessary, just run your generator a bit every day or two to recharge your system and u are good, unless you have a specific lengthy high power need every day. You can also just run your generator morewhen u are boondocking where there are no night time noise restrictions, and for the cost of this type of setup you can run your generator for along time at 3-4 dollars a gallon for gas

If you put a battery on the 12V side you don't need 70A, just buy a cheap golf cart style 12V stepdown converter, they're less than $20 and can keep up with lights/water pumps/etc easily enough and your big 12V load amps like the slides or levelers can be handled by the battery that gets recharged over time.

Definitely a nice install. They are pricey but they have some great benefits, the idle consumption being one of the biggest. How much loss is on that dc to dc convertor? I did like that you had a range for each voltage, i think that's helpful. But 2 things, I think id put that 12v disconnect before the dc to dc convertor, and you need to cut your zip ties better... haha i saw those wrist slitters right away! Great video as always.

Thoughts on the EcoFlow power kits? Seems a lot simpler.
@AllAboutRVs
@AllAboutRVs 7 месяцев назад
Good question. I did a review on the Power Kit and agree it is more simple but I would pick this any day over the Power Kit. The AC/Heat pump I used in the test for amps was no problem for the Multiplus and the Power Kit struggles and takes 5-6 times of trying before it can start it. It has enough headroom and within the specs but it doesn’t deliver well on in rush when it’s the only thing drawing AC. The power kit also has no power assist which limits when you would use it and only accepts one hot leg, so it’s not good for tying it into a 50 amp RV. It might be fun to do a comparison between the two. I do like Eco Flow out of all the “power station”(and more) companies but the Multiplus II lands the win for me.

I'm looking at a similar system, just a little larger with dual inverters. The question I have is 2 orions vs 1 Orion and a Lithium battery. The one concern on the battery is it may get hit with too high of a "charge" current from the Orion - or am I over thinking it?
@AllAboutRVs
@AllAboutRVs 7 месяцев назад
If your talking about to the 24-12 conversion I wouldn’t see the need for more than one Orion and you could even do a smaller smart version when using a battery. The battery will handle the larger items like slides and the Orion will charge it back up.

But when I switch out TT’s I’ll be able to pick up my system in a heart beat and move on. No Thanks .. my $6k system will have just as much power as your with a Hybrid Inverter.

EcoFlow is my first pick in the portable setup systems they do a good job and are still working out the details. I have updates often for their units.

Imo there is only one reason to go with the 24 volt version of the 2x120 multi plus. They don't make a 48 volt version currently. 24 volt is something of an unhappy middle ground between 12 and 48 volts. You have all of the downsides of 48 volts in terms of the added complexity and expense of needing a DC buck converter and potentially a boost converter for alternator charging and only half the benefit in terms of reduced amperage and increased solar charge controller capacity.
@wi4usa
@wi4usa 7 месяцев назад
Why do you need a buck converter. Just use the 120VAC to 12 VDC converter that came in your breaker box. This mean you have to maintain two voltages of batteries, but I am ok with that. I am running two 48V quattro 5000's.

Good question I thought about addressing. They don’t make this inverter with the 2x120 in the 48volt yet. While 48 is better the bigger you get 24 is great for up to the 6,000 watt range. I have a 48 volt system not on the RV and for the RV I pick the Multiplus II every time for the reliability, expansion and the flexibility of power sources.

One issue being the DC-DC converter options to energize your 12v system are much more limited.
@gmercede
@gmercede 7 месяцев назад
Great video Jared. There are more efficiency losses converting from 48VDC to 12VDC vs 24 to 12. So as Jared mentioned the higher voltage is all about sending current to and from your battery and inverter. If you're inverting higher than 6k watts then 48VDC is a good idea, if not then it's maybe not worth it to afford the extra losses in a DC to dc converter. Air conditioner is about 1400 watts after surge. Run two of them plus an occasional microwave simultaneously and you are at about 4k watts. Use as a gauge.
@caseypries7559
@caseypries7559 7 месяцев назад
You don't think running a converter is a negative until it fails and you can't pull in your slides or retract your landing gear. You also waste energy converting 24v to 12v because no converter is 100% efficient. I see more headaches than advantages when paired with a vehicle that so heavily depends on 12V. I'd rather spend the extra on wiring and lower the complication of my system.
@AllAboutRVs
@AllAboutRVs 7 месяцев назад
I love our 12v system on our RV and sticking with it but do see where this has a few advantages over ours. With the 12v battery on board that would minimize the risk of getting stuck with a failure and you could even leave your original converter in the RV power center and have it unplugged but ready as a back up if ever needed. I agree no converter is 100% but the 24-12 Orion should be more efficient than using the original converter on your RV and there won’t be a massive amount of 12v use while using the RV. Most things are a small draw except for setup and tear down.

I have the 12 V multiplus II from Victron. Actually, I’m on my second one after a year and a half because of their poor design of spring clamps for the outgoing 120 V. One of mine arced and burned. and burned the output socket. So much for Victron‘s 10 year warranty as they would not cover it. They did refund me $795 against the $1400 cost of the new one so that shows me they are responsible because of this design. Do you or anyone else in the comment section know someone that can convert my old unit to a screw type, clamp output, sockets just like Victron uses on all of their other equipment. Victron sent my original unit back to me without repairing it. Don’t get me wrong. I love all of their equipment, but this one part is a poor design for an RV bouncing down the road.

Way too much waffle, way too little information about alternatives. I have no concerns about Victron power equipment beyond that it typically has features of no use to me, and a price beyond reasonable for what I do want. Shore power in Australia is much simpler, it might be 10A, it might be 15A. Technically, it could be three phase, but never is. A 10A power cord fits a 15A socket, so unless you need to higher source current you can ignore it.
