This week, we are crossing from Mallorca to Menorca, and join our friends on Sea Odyssey again only to find ourselves in the jolliest of anchorages we’ve ever experienced.
The next day was so bad that we decided to leave the place at 8AM already, and headed towards the next cove, Cala Galdana, where we found paradise in the form of the famous Menorca Mojito man, who comes onboard to prepare and serve delicious mojitos straight on your boat!

It was fun seeing Ryan so happy cracking jokes on the radio! But sitting down at the table to review the situation, looked kind of like he wanted to say "you know, I'm really not happy about the rolling anchorage situation!!!". Great video guys, and don't worry about taking time for family and friends.... you don't have to live with us, you have to live with them! Hahahaa!

Ok guys. I’ll be straight and hopefully you won’t get it wrong. You are missing some points: a) your boat is small and young. A 40 footer is short that means it’s really light combines it with a wide beam and physics says it can be affected by a small tide. Comfort requires at least 44. b) stop Caring about the anchor! It’s che chain keeping you there. The anchor it’s the land of last resort. If the chain straighten is already time to move don’t wait for the anchor to fail. Anyway with a 40m chain in the water you can handle 50knots....so stop minding about the anchor until that wind (and I doubt you had it). I got 60 knots in Croatia and the chain kept me there...so relax. Start checking from 35knots over. c) this last point you answered in the end. STOP LIVING ON THE SCHEDULE. YOU’VE QUIT YOUR JOBS BECAUSE OF THAT! No wind? Wait when the wind comes, don’t waste money on fuel “because you planned so and in that day we MUST BE THERE” There is no MUST, you are in the wind and the sea....accept it, live it....if there is the wind you sail...if there is no wind...you stay. It’s the weather who decides, don’t fight it...go with it. As soon as you accept it the better you’ll find yourselves...because you will sail with the good weather enjoying what Mother Nature gives you. With this point it comes the “relax” don’t force you to stick to some official duty! If you wanna stick to the “we must post the weekly issue” simply make a:”hi guys...we are enjoying our time with family and the places we are in..:see you next week. You have quit your job for a dream...not for a new job. Enjoy it Ame

Hi Ame! I agree with you on all point! But even with our oversized Rocna and 100 meters of chain (we had 40 deployed in that case), when the winds shift at 3AM and your brain is rendered a little foggy by a night of little sleep, one prefers to play it safe when the anchor alarm goes off. We have sustained winds of over 40 knots and haven’t moved, but we did have an unmanned boat drag into us (so it’s not all about your own anchor set up, but also about who you have around you and their own anchor setup). One misconception that a lot of people have about us is that we’ve quit working. We are very much still working! Ryan is an aviation consultant and travels now and then to teach aviation classes all around the world. I freelance in communications and have a couple of clients that I work with. We made the choice to go now, go small and make it work financially with a mix of savings and working on the way, rather than to work for several more years and save before going on an extended holiday. That’s how we can afford to “not have a plan” as opposed to have a budget for a limited amount of time. Yep, sometimes we miss things because we work (we never really show that :p) but we get to live a beautiful adventure regardless. Confusius said “choose a job that you love and you’ll never have to work again” which is how I feel about my jobs. Some people write, other paint, I like to edit. In my freelancing job, I have the chance to only work with clients I’m actually excited to work with. Life is pretty good :) But yeah, this week, we have friends and family onboard, and the laptops are away because life is calling and it is too short to put off! Cheers from Sicily :) /Sophie

@@RyanSophieSailing oh you are in Sicily! so dont miss any of the street food and fried Arancini, don't miss the granita too (latte di mandorla, cioccolato and coffee) or the Brioscia con gelato. You'll end yp with 5 more kilos but it's fine. I see but all the time I hear you talking about your anchor dragging....when the wind shift wake up but to check others not scared by your anchor. I got you didn't fully quit and that's even a one more reason to just enjoy and relax. Don't try to stick to the "we must go to Mallorca" and ending up with a 7 hour expensive motor cruise...unless you really must, because of a flight or catching up someone. You make videos much longer than the others youtubers...that's fine, but i work with photoreporters and i make videos and I'm perfectly aware of the fact of how many hours of video you must go through, how much editing, chopping, selecting music etc it takes a massive amount of time. Therefore if you wanna stick to the weekly basis (for tons of reasons i know and guess) simply shorten it and say...sorry guys short version for a week of fun with parents and friends. Otherwise you stress too much yourselves and end up in quitting....

Sorry I forgot one point: you can use a second anchor on the stern to keep the bow-stern Line towards the swells. Other choice, if the bay is small, a line from each side to a tree (my favorite choice)

I found the west med as well as the cyclades in greece quite difficult to anchor, there is a lot of swell. The adritic and ionian seems to be the perfect region for great anchoring, lot of small islands just break the swell, super peaceful

I use Rocker Stoppers by Davis. 3 on each side with a small mushroom anchor at the bottom of the column. They stack on the boat and don't take too much room and work pretty well at slowing the rock and roll. I have used them on a Macgregor 25 and on my Catalina 30.

As CarBjorn says - Use a hammock. I currently sleep on a double-wide hammock (arthritis -- lower back). Simply string in between the mainmast and put an eye-hook to one side of the companionway. If your really industrious, build a rectangular frame out of PVC/Plastic tube and string the hammock inside it (think catamaran trampoline), then suspend it by tying the 4 corners to eye-hook in the saloon roof (you can simply unhook it when your done sleeping). You will stay steady while the boat is rocking on all axis.

Perhaps another amazing auto-correct moment. Boat pinball lol. Holy Rolly - that really is a crazy time at that anchorage! What a nice Menorca Mojito man after glow you have Sophie! Maybe you should try to warp, meaning bringing out a second stern anchor to force the bow into the waves. Just a fairly light anchor, easy to row out....

True, could do that. But in the small anchorages of the Med, it does throw off the swinging and we didn’t want to risk having a boat swing onto us when the wind would shift (which it did!) /Sophie

Hey guys Attach a line to the stern clit Pass it inside one of the anchor chain ring and back to the mid ship cleat now you pull and adjust the angle of your bow to keep in the swell. That is going to solve the problem. Also be careful is an effect typical in the med. It is when the wind from the land is not strong enough at night and your depth is quite a bit. The waves will bounce against shore and the boat is not completely turn. You will get it with time

You could also try try throwing the boom out, and hanging a bucket off it into the water,basically the same idea as your flopper stopper, cheaper too

Great video as usual. On a really rolly anchorage would it be better to sleep in a hammock rather than a bunk bed. I'm no sailor but it seems that's how they did it in the olden days. All the best. Mike in Sheffield.

Thanks mike! Hammock would be great, but we don’t really have the space to hang one, either in the cabin or on deck. Could hang one on the arch, but that would be the wrong way to counterbalance the rolly motion of the boat! /Sophie

I was laying in my backyard hammock last week and I started wondering about the rolly anchorages many of the sailors talk about. My question was, would sleeping in a hammock on board help reduce the feeling of being tossed around? What are your thoughts on that? It seems like a timely question for this week's episode, and I will probably ask other other sailors on RU-vid too. Cheers! Those cocktails looked really tasty.

Hi The 'Magma R10702 Rock N Roll Stabilizer' apparently work well. The folks on 'Boat Fam' used it very successfully on their old trawler in the Bahamas the center hinge design means it was fast reacting. They reported that they were surprised how well it worked but continued to use it for a whole season . It was quick and easy to deploy too, they has the outrigger set for quick deployment. I think I might use a whisker or spinnaker pole rather than the boom. I could not find the video where they talk about this model but real world experience counts for a lot ,( they are currently on different adventurers after they had a third child! But plan to go back afloat in the future). Enjoy your family Cheers Warren

I again urge you to head to the Caribbean. The too rolling anchorages and too high humidity are all less bothersome there. I hate to see you guys suffer when there is a better way. The water is warmer too. Did I mention the yummy rum drinks?? Fair Winds heading West😁✅

Some wind? Square you around? I believe I have mentioned before (as have others, if I remember) that a bridle set from the stern to the anchor chain can point you into the swell and stop that side-to-side rolling. Take action and make it happen. Of course, this comes too late for this vlog. :-( Bummer. You guys will get the hang of it I'm sure. 😉⛵⚓🌊🤦‍♂️🤦‍♀️🥂

I fully agree. But I think, this very cool and easy maneuver needs a bit more of explanation: Whenever it is a good idea to turn the boat on anchor or buoy because of swell or wind direction, take one of your harbor lines (which should be 1,5 times the length of your boat = 60 feet) and tow it using a bowline knot to your anchor chain right in front of your boat. Than tow the other end of the line along the outside of your ship to a clamp on the back of your boat very easily and relaxed without tightening it. You do not need any winch and you do not have to pull anything. Just let more anchor chain go out. The line will take more and more weight of the boat and gently turns the stern into the wind. The turning direction belongs to the side you have fixed the line along. By letting out/down the anchor chain you can turn the boat more and more and stop the motion at any angle. If you want to turn the boat back in normal position just pull the anchor chain up using your electric winch til the bowline knot is in front of your boat again. This maneuver is also very very useful if you are anchored in an hot spot like Caribbean and want to let the wind blow from stern into the boat via companionway and out via V-berth which makes everything much more coole and comfortable. keep on rolling ; ) best greetings from Bavaria/Germany

Consider the boat as a living animal, with its own breathing, feeding, walking movements. Like a horse. Not possible to get seasick on a horse; you're just a guest sitting up there and he will do what he wants.

Congrats on 15K... I love your videos. At 4:05 I see (out the side port) that the neighboring boats are pointed directly at you and into the swell. 90* different than your boat. No, they weren’t. In the Med in some smaller anchorages, the wind and the swell pushes boats in all different directions. We’ve experienced that a few times! /Sophie
