Getting free, and setting sail next year. Planning now to explore the Mediterranean so a big THANK YOU for taking the time to compile all of this excellent information!
Really enjoying these cruising tips series. I've watched all of your videos from the start and find them extremely inspiring, but the practical tips in these videos are much appreciated. Keep it up!
Hey there , my name is Don and Im from Canada . Jackson that was one of the best videos on the ins and outs of sailing . Truely . I follow about four sailing videos and that really helped . Not that I am going to sail anytime soon . Its not all about sailing and whats for dinner haha . So I have really enjoyed this one and look forward to more . Ive been following since Croatia . Your loyal mate Don from Canada . Haha
Was in the Med for 6 years, last year the wind never stopped!! 20/40 knots, In Greece hated the port police if you a forgein flagged yacht, they have no idea of the rules. Kos was so bad that yacht never checked out there for turkey. Found turkey vey efficient.
If you ever check into the United States DO NOT take the relaxed approach. You must take your boat directly to the designated Customs Dock as opposed to anchoring out and dinghying in. I’ve personally witnessed a US citizen returning from a weekend in Canada do it wrong. He anchored out and checked in with Customs the next morning having gone ashore for dinner between his anchoring out and reporting in. He was detained in the Customs office from 9am when he reported in until they closed at the end of the day. During this time they searched his boat THREE times, leaving a horrible mess. They also interrogated him at length twice about every person he came into contact with in Canada and about every minute of his time after he anchored especially his time ashore and who he’d met while ashore. In the end he was given the maximum $10,000 fine but was lucky enough that they did not seize and sell off his boat. And this was a very dignified looking retired gentleman who had simply gone to Canada to visit a friend for the weekend.
Very well put together video. Thanks for sharing the ins and outs of living aboard and pointing out it isn’t always rosy behind the beautiful scenes. Great job. Cheers.
Also be careful of summer storms, got struck twice by lightning, insurance paid repairs in full, next time they offered money for 2nd Ebay gear, took them to the authorities in Canberra, paid up in 7 days. Also for repairs go to turkey Mamaruis very efficient, repairs in Greece just never happen.
There is an exemption from the schenghen 90 day rule for airline crew and marine crew. Apparently, some cruising boats have qualified by producing a crew list and qualifications. Is it possible that this is the reason why they are asking for qualifications?
One thing you didn't mention much was the cruising season, for example I live in Sardinia and I cruise here year round but I hate cruising in August (peek season) as every wally and their friends are cruising (capable or not), traffic actually becomes a big issue especially with motor yachts, jet bikes and Ribs running around everywhere, it becomes almost impossible to find a marina place if you need one in the popular areas and they become super expensive. Better to visit just outside of peek and you'll enjoy it much much more.
SpinDreams Great advice! We only explored the Med in peak season and didn’t get the opportunity to see in the off season I agree it would be a different experience and much cheaper. Though more unstable weather and colder. Pros and cons to both :) We hope your enjoying yourself!
That's what I'd heard, personally if I never set foot on a sailboat in the med I'd be happy, not a relaxing place to sail, I'd take an Atlantic crossing any day before a season in the med, actually I'd take the southern ocean on the right boat ahead of the med, mind you we do sail fast and hard here off the Southern African coast, regularly in 25 to 30 knots.
I used to have a pilotage publication which gave bearings of free anchorages around the Med? Does anybody know the title of this as I cannot find it anywhere. Thank you for posting this video.
WAIT! Arriving an departing in the European countries of the Mediterranean cost one day!? I'm planning to sail the Med instead of Asia because I am a European citizen and I figured I would not have to check in or out at all as long as I stay in Europe with my boat. Please let me know if I'm totally wrong here.
I think you may be onto something with this video. 🤔 I liked it but I have one suggestion. 😊 Less footage of watching you talk and more footage of what you're talking about. 😁
Give Atherns a miss went there 6 times always threatening us with fine because the previous port place didn’t put a date or wanted skippers license always talk to the boss ,they never did fine us all to hard to fill the paper work.
Hi there, did you end up needing a license to enter any of the countries? I'm planning a trip next year without a license. Did it cause many headaches? Thanks, John.
