For me, it is a bit painful and disrespectful to watch. Still appreciate Gaels openness. Candid discussions usually are valuable to some degree. Actually, when you explained topical authority, I think I better understood why content templates are important to lower cost of retrieval, due to the similarity with the document that outranked the big authority in the first place. Watching the rest now, thanks for doing this, you two!

Thanks for the interview Gael and even more thanks for the summary at the end. 🙏🏻 Korays content is usually insightfull but somewhere halfway I loose track and fall asleep. Same thing happened here with him rambling on and on. Great insights though even when he indeed tends to overcomplicate things sometimes.

I think it actually painted a more holistic picture of him than what is sometimes out there, where semantic seo is his backbone, but he's after the rankings just like all of us doing SEO. I love this! I now realise this is the approach we used for one of our clients during lockdown. Systematically working through the ontology and associated queries of a topic. Combined with external and internal links the traffic grew from couple 100k to 2M. You managed to slow down Koray enough for me to understand 20% 😂 he makes me feel so dumb 😅

Thanks for the interview Gael! I watched some of Korays videos lately and even though he definitely has a lot of knowledge, it somehow made me feel confused and overwhelmed, so I quit watching. I have good knowledge of SEO but found it hard to grasp. It looks like I wasn't the only one! It's good that Koray acknowledges this and tries to communicate things in a more easy manner. This interview definitely made some things easier to understand. I do, however, feel like Koray is overthinking and overcomplicating things a bit. I can understand that not everyone knows what to do after watching his materials.

If you try to simplify a complex topic in order to make it easy, you must lose details. Think about every kind of engineering or medicine, geology, aviation, nutrition and so on. If you want to teach aviation or medicine students with 5-minute videos, a lot will crash down or not work at all. The demand of elevator-pitching years of testing will let you lose the substance. One part of the audience demands a simplification. Another part wants to get even deeper. So it will be, and that's ok. You can simplify every topic to a certain level, but not more. When I saw the first free videos, I did not understand much, but I was attracted by the semantic concept and the deep deconstructing of language and communication. In the course, I felt stoned by the complexity, again. But I accept that my brain will take the average 5 times of repetition to get it. Communication is a rocket science, and it will stay. People in long relationships know how difficult even simple daily communication attempts may be. In Semantic SEO, we talk about a global machine trying to simulate and predict human communication processes without having a living idea of mankind. That's what makes the communication bridge between man and machine overwhelming. Thank you all for that interview.

The most interesting insights of this interview were around core updates and "shocking the system" between them and how search engines work (looking at them from a more economical point of view). Though I'd definitely wouldn't go as far as breaking a site, breaking the CSS etc to accomplish this. :) I remain a bit of a Koray sceptic though and the case studies didn't help much, especially the one with the "penis shaped as mushroom" example. As a side note, looking at Koray's article on this vs. the one from Fatherly (yes... I was intrigued and googled the query!) which is ranking above them, I thought it was interesting that Fatherly's got straight to the point and stayed on topic. While in Koray's article it first went into "anatomy of the human penis" and then "do you have an average penis?" which don't serve the search intent at all. Made me bounce off the page in fact. I very much wonder how Koray would fare in actually competitive fields such as affiliate marketing. But I guess there's no case studies about that.

I know you pushed back on this question, but I still don't get how you "first outrank a high authority competitor" for high impression queries so that the rest of your content ranks easier? I get the concept, but how is this done in reality with a brand new website? Is it as simple as finding high search volume queries where an authority site ranks but whose content doesn't actually target the query? And presumably neither does the rest of the SERP? Or is it link building on high impression info content? Or something else?

The way I understand - just write a bunch of articles that may not rank, searching for the ones that get the most impressions, then double down as a pillar of content.

By mentioning highly cited studies. Giving more numeric values and facts. Using well-designed images for all H2 and H3 tags. Also using anchor texts as explained in the video. And lastly 'keyword volume' still a prominant factor for designing content.

PageRank and Knowledge-Based Trust are two sides of the same coin. You can teach Google to consider your site as a go-to resource for answering queries when you have both good backlinks AND contextually sharp content with a high degree of factuality and query responsiveness. Koray has shown you can rank on KBT alone, but he isn't saying you should ignore PR-that's the wrong message to take. A truly holistic SEO strategy should prioritize content and links, but Koray is emphasizing the importance of content in a unique and objective way.

Long story short: Ensure your content aligns with your topical theme and is both easily accessible and understandable for search engines. But, this interview literally stretched my mind. Having spent over 7 years in this industry, it’s rare to find content that reshapes my understanding. It gave me a deeper understanding of the economics behind search engines and how they function. The interview itself is quite informational heavy, and it takes you to the first principles (fundamental principles), guiding you on creating tactics and strategies around it.

This was a great interview. Gael, you did a great job at pulling Koray back into "talking simple" mode - than you for that. And thank to Koray for being co-operative with Gael's journalistic interview approach and sharing some great knowledge bombs. One thing i didn't quite get to bottom of @TopicalAuthority... you mentioned it's good to "shock" Google into re-looking at your site. But is it best to load up a batch of new posts just before or just after a Google core algo update? Which action has the best impact for your content?

Great question Michelle. I guess you'll become famous, if you can reliably predict when "just before a Google core update" is. I thin Barry Schwarz tried to call the last one almost weekly for two months, because one was overdue. Herein lies probably also your answer. It probably does not matter.

What an excellent and in parts fascinating interview. Koray's communication style, once you've got the jargon and a little experience of his style of speaking seems pretty efficient to me. Slightly confusing now and then, but I put that down to the newness of the concepts and the jargon. Thankyou Gael for the interview, you did a great job. But it was a bit scary at times too. Brains far quicker than mine, Koray, for example are already streets ahead of me when it comes to applying AI and the idea of robot sites churning out, perfectly formed, sites taking over swathes of real estate is an important thing that goes way beyond merely making money. (thanks govt and tech for the censorship, we see you now) That said, truth be told I found it a bit inspirational and I'm looking forward to learning more about the ideas behind the concepts and the application of AI tools.

Koray is heavily influenced by Bill Slawski. I wouldn’t say that he brings a lot of innovative concepts, but he does bring more attention and focus on understanding the various nuances and mechanics of a search engine and giving it what it wants. More of an engineer's perspective. That said, his content is time-consuming, can be more theoretical, and isn’t beginner-friendly, so it’s not for everyone.

was listening on the podcast then when Gael stopped Koray to point out that he's not answering the question, I stopped listening and turned to youtube. I gotta watch this, lol great interview Gael! Edit: Thank you for the summary of the keypoints Gael! I think Koray is more of a technical person rather than a marketing guy, that's why he finds it challenging to explain things in a simple manner. Also because he's not a populist, lol. But you also pointed out the language barrier so that can be a factor. English is also my 2nd language and sometimes I find myself explaining things a bit too lengthy as I can't quickly translate everything in a simple manner. anyway, thank again for the keypoints!

Thanks for an interesting interview and the effort to make theory also be actionable. @TopicalAuthority and @Gael. One large claim is that a site's quality will be re-evaluated during a Google core update. I'd like to see some proof of that. I'd like to see traffic charts that are annotated with the time the site was worked on and the Google core updates that resulted in the large jumps (up). Because frankly in the graphs I have seen from @Koray 's case studies, I don't detect this correlation (or statistical causation). I usually see growth, but the core update theory I have my doubts about. It also confuses me that on the one hand the core update causes the re-evaluation, on the other hand the re-evaluation can be triggered by ranking one or two large volume topics above their current authority sites. How can both be true at the same time. They seem mutually exclusive to me.

I've seen it with multiple core updates. Re-evaluations and re-rankings can happen because of many things, not just core updates, I don't see them as mutually exclusive.

Most of the case studies that Koray shares are about going in-depth and wide in terms of topics. The question is, will it really help the business in terms of sales or leads? For example, in one of the websites that sell some sort of water, the website ranks for "benefits of drinking water" and will see a heavy increase in traffic, but how does that affect the sales? I think his case studies should also have a focus on business numbers like sales, leads and not just traffic.

it can gain trafic but 5 good leads a month is better than 5000 bad ones . most people be better going back to paper advertising nowadays in the localpress etc

From Koray's perspective, it seems the supporting content is more for funneling authority back to the core "money pages" and increasing the overall status of the site for SEO purposes (e.g., if that article on that topic beats out what other authorities have to say on the topic that can influence future rankability site-wide). Leads can be generated from popups. They could retarget the visitor on social. Of course, for an ads site, traffic could be the main focus. I often get sponsorship requests on my high-traffic info pages. Lots of different angles.

Engaging with Koray's content is like reading an encyclopedia from the beginning rather than a "for dummies" book. Everything you need to know is there, but it has a way of showing you just how little you actually understand about search. Humility and patience are required-traits many SEOs struggle with.

One of the best interviews I have ever watched. It wasn't easy to understand everything, but it really makes sense. This guy has an IQ of 200, I think, haha. Now, I'm even scared to start implementing all that to my sites, but I will try to pay attention to these things while publishing new articles or updating older content.

I’m a lawyer with undergrad in semantic philosophy. I discovered Koray and was excited by his emphasis. I found him impenetrable. I took account of English being a second language and persisted. But English wasn’t the issue. He has an enormous vocabulary. The issue is that he either doesn’t truly understand the topic - and just rehashes buzzwords into convoluted sentences - or he does understand the area and deliberately obfuscates. I now know it’s the latter. I suspect he obfuscates for commercial and branding reasons. He wants to appear like a genius to a lay audience and give them reason to buy his courses. Everything that is ever extracted from Koray has been explained simply, concisely and clearly by others who explain entity SEO. Stop venerating this marketing guy.

I'm neither a lawyer or a semantic philosopher, but after studying his content for some time and reading the parents he references I've had consistent success for my own sites and for clients. It requires real work to learn, but it is worth the effort.

That's simply a misunderstood phrase. Do you want to understand the concept, or do you want to understand the concept and be able to do it as well. Imagine advanced college courses all being taught using a 6 year old's vocabulary,,, it doesn't happen and will never happen. College is to teach people how to be "Doctor, nurse, astrophysicist, biologist, etc",which you confuse with explaining concepts. It's simple to explain to a six year old what a doctor is, and does within the framework of their vocabulary. But if the the six year old were to ask "now teach me to be a doctor so that I can do what they do"... How then should you respond?

@@SpiritTracker7 Yes, misunderstood in the context that we are not truly breaking it down to a six year old child...we are attempting(in this case to break it down to an audience of viewers with ample background) in a simple manner for it to be understood. Within the context of the full quote, ""If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough.", this quote is correct to the full extent. This does not mean that you can explain what you might know about SEO to a six year old (impossible), but it does mean that you should be able to explain it simply to someone with the requisite background to understand a simple explanation. Like most people watching Authority Hackers. And that's really where Gael shines in these interviews. Perfect example of this simple explanation is the TL;DW section of the video. Gael breaks it down perfectly. So really hats off to Gael. Because Korays entire strategy is extremely simple even for anyone doing SEO for only a short period of time. This is not advanced level college academia as much as Koray would love it to be. Most of what he preaches SEO's have been doing since 2007. It's not really new at all. Korays strategy. Topical map that focuses on info gaps instead of keyword gaps. Attribute questions to pages on website and answer with no fluff. Focus on the most important content topics to develop theme of website then expand to further topics. Moving up quality tiers based on how much your authority your website has. Pruning website of low quality pages. Dumping lots of high quality content at once. Targeting queries that can generate lots of impressions so Google can requalify your website authority. Importance of headings and sentence structure akin to optimizing for feature snippets. None of this is rocket science. Oh also Stoney deGeyter has been talking about topical authority since at least 2015 which would have been just the start of Korays career. So Koray definitely didn't coin the term topical authority either. Stoney even has an article from 2015 about "Topical Optimization" and how to build topical authority for your website.

@@voicemyvoice I simply disagree with the phrase when it comes to explaining/teaching actionable concepts. How many would complain about a course called "How to Perform Quantum Mechanics Double-Slit Experiment" where concepts are in part reducible and parts that are irreducible? Nothing works that way, if it did, every advanced topic would be simplified so that everyone could do it. Here are some facts for you... a large percentage of the general population are simply lazy. So Lazy that they want you to take 10 years of expert knowledge and give to them for free. They want value in exchange for nothing. Now I am glad that this little experiment happened. I do believe that Koray's brain works a lot like how my brain works when it comes to computers, servers, networks etc. We need the constant reminder to reduce where something can be reduced, again not every concept can be reduced if its conveying literal reproducible instructions. But we can go off on showing off our vocabulary and understanding of advanced concepts. Even I had to be reminded to not sound so Poindexter. 90% of the time Koray is backing his assertions with the corresponding patent(s). Sometimes he is using advanced machine learning and data science terminology as well. No-one wants to do the "prerequisites" do they? They want to enter into a 301 classroom and have it be taught in a 101 simplified way. Your notes are dead on. Great summary. But they are only partially actionable. All of the detailed parts aren't there... and you can't actually do it the way he does without them. How to fine tune a topical map, how to structure the articles so that your main entities are optimal and not competing with a secondary entity etc.

I'm convinced Koray deliberately makes his concepts difficult to understand for us mere mortals. A lot of the terminology used is highly technical and beyond the grasp of most SEOs. As a course member of his I'm still baffled by much of the course content.
