So what exactly is TrackIR? Well put very simply, it’s a head tracker that tracks the movement of your head and allows you to look around in game by moving your head in real life which frees up your hands from having to look around with the mouse, and because it supports 6 degrees of freedom, it also means you can zoom in to read different dials in the cockpit of your plane or roll your head left and right as well. It’s basically similar to VR but without having to spend hundreds of euro’s on a VR headset or have a great big plastic brick strapped to your face for hours.
I think for me the biggest selling point of TrackIR and one of the main advantages it has over Virtual Reality is that doesn’t require a beasty PC to use, in fact it doesn’t really use much processing power or affect your fps at all while still giving you full head tracking capability. With the tracking software open it’s using less than 1% of my CPU and memory and it’s opening up a whole extra level of immersion in the games I’m playing, but I mean TrackIR and head tracking in general isn’t a new technology, this stuff’s been around for years and years, but it goes to show how well it works when you consider how many players like me are still choosing to use it and go back to it today.

I'm new to EuroTruck Simulator (less than a month) and couldn't get on with using buttons to look left and right as it wasn't realistic enough. I remembered I had TrackIR, which I got for sim racing a few months ago, and it has completely changed the way EuroTruck Simulator 2 plays. It's great, and I've become utterly addicted to it. I'll be checking Squirrels profile shortly as well.

Made my own IR Head tracker and IR filter for my webcam. I can't go back to traditional ways of joystick and such. It's truly that significant in games that support it. This should become more common. VR gives me intense motion sickness as opposed to IR which is tracking my real head movement at the mapping I want it to be.

Man, great review. I just bought a 42" oled for my sim rig to replace older 4k lcd tv. Really loving it and back to using flight sim and others on this new instead of VR as much and thinking I should get this. Sometimes VR is also just too tiring. I had a cheap knock off head tracker once that I found cumbersome and a bit jenky so seems like you and a few others love this so will go ahead and order from Amazon today to try it out.

Basically it turns your neck into an additional input. I absolutely love it in flying and driving games with detailed cockpits/cabins. If setup with emulation it can be used in any game that supports mouse as well with mixed results.

Head tracker is 10 x better option to VR glasses when working with PCs. Most PCs can work with it - without major HW upgrades, and you get to see the controls. A must for every player.

Great video review of the setup! Played a bit of American Truck Simulator with some friends last night and got to the point where I have to buy this now. It's great to see top creators like Squirrel who uses and has used TrackIR for ages now and to see people like yourself still like the product to this day. Especially since I don't have the time or space to setup a wide screen or triple monitor setup, TrackIR is gonna save me the hassle of using buttons or my mouse to look around.

I’ve been using my web cam with Open Track and it works quite well for Euro Truck 2, but not as well as TrackIR would be. TrackIR works in the dark while Open Track does not, I tried, as far as I know. Pretty happy TrackIR isn’t prohibitively expensive like Tobii and VR. TrackIR is still superior to both technologies imo. I think TrackIR would be a great purchase for me since I like racing and Elite Dangerous

I use track Ir for iracing and it works a dream. I use surround sound while racing so no headset, only down fall is you have yo wear a hat bar that, good bit of kit. (Just be careful with import fee's the sneaky F%#!s)

TrackIR 5 still works after being mothballed for a couple years. Got back into simming and the biggest bitch of it is the setup and getting comfortable just like the first several times. Hell, the hat clip still works fine. Needs a bit of alcohol wipe cleaning as does the sensor but other than that, it just works. Hardware is fine. The SOFTWARE needs work. Big time. On 4K screens it doesn't adapt. Tiny little menus. I would also agree. VR doesn't have the native resolution yet. Valve's Deckard upcoming perhaps this year is 2x UHD or 4K OLED screens. Double the resolution will probably solve the detail acuity nodes but VR can't fix the human node of motion sickness. Driving games give it to me but flight sims don't even when pulling Gs.

I wonder if the lack of motion sickness in flight sims is because most of us have never pulled high G's in a plane in real life so our brains lack any sort of expectation as to what it would feel like, whereas we all know what cars feel like so when we gas up and throw a ford escort rally round a corner but get no sensation of g-force on our bodies our brains just go haywire and default to vomit mode (because that's helpful).

I want head tracking to use in warthunder. As I can't both track my target, and also do precision turns. So I am often forced to either look ahead, and hope the enemy is were I think he is. Or pull a full hard g turn, and hope I dont rip, or blackout. But I am concerned that I am gonna drop a couple hundred(cad) on a piece of plastic that I dont like, or doesn't suit my porpoise. Especially when I plan on getting a VR headset some time soon.

Yup you can buy it later. There is a pull down option to choose either the hatclip or pro clip. So you just select the one youre gonna use.

Hi, the profile works with and without the pro clip, just make sure you select "track hat" in the TrackIR software if you're not using the pro clip. Does the squirrel profile show up in the drop down list when you open the Trackir app?

You'll need to take it out everytime VR's performance is sluggish. VR requires 8x more resolution and cards like the 4090 are required for high FPS, it's going to keep happening.

Vr is completely viable.. but you just cant run everything in ultra with demanding games depending on the resolution of the headset.. but vr doesn't require 8x more resolution xD it just has to render 2x the resolution... vr adds alot of immersion on the table wich is really cool but does come with some downsides. ( fov, not being able to see real life etc ) For me i like to have trackir is to play dcs and being able to more easily watch tutorials and learn easier without having to wear a bulky headset

So does it work in the dark as well ? As I run a full sim rig with custom lighting so some times it’s dark if I’m in night scenes or tunnels.

Yeah it works best in the dark, just keep in mind that any other lights like LED's in the background may interfere with the tracking, but only if they're directly in line of the sensor.

I put the file into where You mentioned and when I actually go into TIR5, there is no "Flying" profile. HELP as Your setup is so much better then anything Ive made in 6 years. I am wondering if this is not working because the flying profile was made in 2020 ? Thanks for info

Hm, are you sure you put it in C:\Users\YOUR_PC_NAME\AppData\Roaming\NaturalPoint\TrackIR 5\Profiles (and changed the PC name to your own)? The profiles folder used to be located elsewhere, but now this is the only path that works. The only other thing I can think of off the top of my head is that you have multiple hard drives with possibly multiple D:\ E:\ F:\ and more than one installation of windows that means you have more than one Users\YOUR_PC_NAME directories, in which case you would just need to search your other drives for the Users directory and follow the same path to the Trackir Profile folder. Example: D:\Users\YOUR_PC_NAME\AppData\Roaming\NaturalPoint\TrackIR 5\Profiles E:\Users\YOUR_PC_NAME\AppData\Roaming\NaturalPoint\TrackIR 5\Profiles F:\Users\YOUR_PC_NAME\AppData\Roaming\NaturalPoint\TrackIR 5\Profiles The profile should work fine because I used all the same files in my video and my trackir and it's all fine so it's something else :)

@@Red2_Official I do have 5 SSD drives on an external 7 port hub with power switches and lights for each one. 2 internal 1 tb's and 1 2TB SSD that are always on. I did a lot of moving things around to make space and get rid of copies and now have 4 SSD's that are 500Gigs or less that I am not using except for storage. Thank You so much for your help.

Not sure I understand what you mean. The TrackClip Pro is part of a complete kit and doesn't do anything on its own, you need the TrackIR sensor with it.

heard that headtracking is possible in Star Citizen by using a normal webcam... but I dont actually see its advantages, except you have a huge curved screen or multiple screens, so I dont really see the pont in it, not to mention having an extra device for it (that costs money aswell) - so yeah, if one has enogh money to sourrund himself with screens it may be an okay investment, but the middle class worker, I am, is happy to even be able to afford the games^^

Actually I think it's most beneficial if you don't have a triple screen setup, since multiple screens make head tracking redundant. TrackIR is best in situations where your FOV doesn't let you see enough of the screen in one frame so you can quickly open up the screen by glancing left or right or zoom in etc without having to mess around using a mouse or hat switch for looking around :)

More useful for single screens, not really needed if you have a multi-screen setup, and this is cheaper and easier to use then a multi-screen setup. You can experiment with some of the free methods of Head Tracking with Star Citizen, they won't be quite as snappy, lag free and reliable as TrackIR 5, but they can give you an idea if that is something you want, and if you don't want to spend the money on TrackIR 5 or Tobii, the free or inexpensive methods are still better then nothing. I started with Open Track, Smooth Track and an iPhone. For me, head tracking in Star Citizen is a game changer, and I love it. If you do a lot of ship to ship combat, it improves your combat awareness greatly. And even just cruising around taking in the sights, it is just more immersive. I just ordered a custom made wireless head tracker to use with the TrackIR 5 camera and software. I have wireless headset, so I don't really want any wires like the Pro-clip uses. Plus this one looks more robust then the Pro-Clip.

Good review. Looks like it might work well, but now that Face recognition is a thing and webcams are so cheap now, is there's no solution that can just track your face without having to put a stupid wired clip on your head? That's the main thing putting me off the idea at the moment.

You could check out "ViewTracker" on Steam which does exactly that, but none of the ones I've tried have been able to match TrackIR for accuracy

They work, but the limitations are low light. Can’t play in the dark, which I like to do at night. My oled monitor isn’t bright enough during low light scenes for the camera to track your face.

Actually I just installed this profile now and I'm testing it on the F-16 in DCS. It needs just a little more sensitivity on the yaw to look around easier, but it feels pretty good. I just bought the TrackIR today so still getting used to it coming from VR.

Curious what made you want to switch from VR to TrackIR? Don't get me wrong I prefer TrackIR for ease of use too, but it does lack the depth perception of VR so i'd be interested to know what made you switch :)

@@Red2_Official Few reasons actually. I have a 9600k, 32g, RTX3050, and a Valve Index, so it will only run at a good framerate >60fps if literally everything is on the lowest setting possible. It really feels like I'm flying in Minecraft sometimes lol. Then just the basic fatigue of having the VR on your face for hours, not being able to turn in your chair to see behind without getting a very sore neck. Plus you still need to lift the VR to use the keyboard. What really irked me about VR though, is that with Track IR I can adjust the sensitivity and see behind no problem, but with VR you can't. Which is weird considering there is so much more tech in a VR headset, yet I physically have to twist 180 degrees to see behind me. As a design "the VR headset" is a pretty bad ergonomically. They should have been made as light helmets. With the weight on the top center of your head, instead of the weight being on the forehead, and resting on your eye sockets. If I had the PC to max out the VR, I would have stayed with it. But seeing the nice graphics on screen with Track IR is just too cool looking to pass up. It's delinitely a good alternative in my book.

Do still have to look at your monitor somehow? By that i mean like move your head a bit to the side and try to move your eyes?

Yeah but it feels really natural. You keep your eyes on the screen and you move your head from left to right, but you don't need to move your actual head as far as it moves in game. You could set it up so that you look 5 degrees to your left, and the game looks 90 degress to the left and so on. This was my first hardware review and I didn't record me actually using it which was kinda dumb... Maybe I'll make a new one soon.

I have trackir2 and it never worked, any bright light or sun can make it impossible to configure so i had to play in a darken roo even then it was hit and miss.. I have numer one as well same problem.

It uses infrared light detectors to track your head movement, and the sun gives off a lot of infrared light, so naturally flooding your room with sunlight will make it difficult to seperate your head from the background noise in the room. It's just a limitation of the technology, though the pro clip helps a lot.

Yeah it should fit no problem. I checked out a few screenshots of the headset to understand your concern and I see what you mean, but you could have the clip attached to the main headband itself (the angle doesn't matter), or attach it to the thinner metal bits that attach the main ear cups to the headband. Absolute worst case scenario you'd still get the cap with the hatclip included with the kit, though like I said you shouldn't need to use it :)

True but I find it's not as responsive as TrackIR. I fiddled around in OpenTrack using both a Trackhat kit and then a 60hz streaming webcam and it just didn't feel anywhere near as good to me personally. I don't know if there's some magic settings you can use to make it less sluggish but I gave up and just went back to what I know works best :)

Had a TrackIR 4 and the sensor just died... So having to buy version 5. But 4 lasted for 19yrs and agreed I have VR and in IL-2 tracker was always better.

Yeah for me VR just isn't there yet when it comes to graphical fidelity. The immersion factor is fantastic and the intuitive nature of being surrounded by the game world makes it almost feel like cheating in a dogfight, but the jagged edges and performance issues in every game are just too much to bare imo.

Sorry for the late reply, I only just noticed your comment - I'm not sure how useful TrackIR would be as a mouse (or if it's even possible), and instead I would recommend looking at something called Tobii Eye Tracker. I googled it and it seems possible, plus the eye tracker itself is well established as a quality product (similar to TrackIR 5), though I haven't had a chance to use it myself. As the name suggests, it tracks your eyes rather than your whole head. From a google search: How to use Tobii Eye Tracker as mouse? Open Tobii Eye Tracking, go to Interactions > Mouse. Click Warp on key and select which keyboard key you want to use. Enable the Perform a click when releasing key checkbox. Now position your eyes on a link or other control and press the selected key to move the cursor to that location and click on it. gaming.tobii.com/product/eye-tracker-5/ Hope that helps!

@@gregoriocarreno the way the game was setup generally, the views , the perspectives....there's a way you can mitigate that in dev speak. So if you look this game up, you will find that it's on a list of games that are notorious for this nauseating effect in VR goggles.

@@Red2_Official From what I've read, it's a 10-15ms lag. On a 60Hz screen it's about a frame of lag. That's to say, barely noticable if you come off from TrackIR and not noticable at all if you haven't used TrackIR.

With the track hat clip that you wear on the front of a cap, yes. With the Pro clip that sits on your head set, no. You can get wireless LED trackers either custom 3d printed on etsy or the wireless tracker from Trackhat etc, but the fastest and cheapest way to get it wireless is just to use the track hat clip and not the pro clip.

The movement of the device feels strange and jerky. It's like there's a point in the middle where it gets stuck, and then suddenly snaps in the direction you're turning your head. It's similar to the feeling of trying to drive while drunk. Surprisingly, no one seems to mention this issue. It takes a lot of effort to figure out how to adjust the settings, and by the time you do, you may as well have saved up for a VR headset. While the profiles can be helpful, overall, the device doesn't live up to the hype.

Hi Jason, that's not an issue it's a deadzone to reduce movement when looking straight ahead. If you want full movement just remove the deadzone in the software using the options on the left hand side.

my unit died after using it only about 20 times. I paid $179.50, $9 per use! The concept is good but I can't recommend it.

Garbage! Bought the pro clip so TrackIR would track better than the hat clip. The pro clip lasted about 2 dozen uses before it crapped out and no longer sends the IR light from the 3 end points. HIGHLY DO NOT RECOMMEND!

people that show you trackir is fooling you. when you use Trackir you do not look like you are actually inside the video game., you see the hold computer. his video show a goo look that you will mot see with trackir .i use trackir as well and his view of how you will see you sim is a liy
