Reason I bought Diva is because the actual GUI is similar to what you'd find on authentic retro analog synths, that why it is set out a certain way. If you are willing to learn, it's a good avenue for getting used to a physical interface. It definitely has a different sound to Serum, fundamentally because of its detuned voices which mimic the imperfections of analog gear. That being said, I have used Serum for a few years while learning about this stuff, and in terms of ease of use and LFO control, it has much more technical precision than the Diva, but it does also have that instantly identifiable 'Serum sound'. Diva - much prefer the sound (taste) Serum - crazy capability, perfect for sound design
@EyezerProductionz
@EyezerProductionz 3 года назад
In my eyes, Diva and Serum are not really comparable synths because they function differently. Diva is created to sound & behave like vintage analog synthesizers. Serum is more of a sound design synth, because you can modulate a lot of stuff and it can read wavetables, do some FM, sync in a very simple way etc. I would not buy Diva unless you have an interest in vintage analog synthesizers. Serum is the better option if you just want a synth with a wide sound palette. I have both of them but I rarely use Serum, but that's mainly because I like vintage analog synthesizers a lot so Diva is more interesting for me to play around with.

Exactly. From developers perspective I can tell they both have written in C++ but Serum is written in Juce framework . Diva has been created by own framework of Uhe. I bought Diva last week and it was a brilliant decision as I almost bought a JP 8000 instead. I also bought Adam Szabo's JP6K and lone behold i layered Diva's digital Oscillator with JP6K and I prob got as close as you can get to a JP 8000. The filter and high end of JP6K with the thickness and warmth of Diva sounds amazing. Also use Diva in "draft" mode as it sounds the most like the JP 8000. Together I call it the JP 9000 😆

Turns out that I prefer Diva. I’ve been testing Pigments 2, Massive X and a Largo. I think I prefer Massive X and Largo but it’s kind of impossible. They are too varied/complicated to compare back to back, and too hard to program (for me) to give a valid comparison. In other words, they all work and sound great.

The answer for me is to buy both - Diva (and Repro) are amazing for warm analogue sounds but you can't beat Serum for crazy wavetable madness. The mass of wavetables in Serum and being able to load your own into Serum easily gives that more flexibility.

@@brianlespoir6287 You cant run 10 instances of a hardware synthesiser at the same time so it's a moot point, plus recording them in audio takes a long time and effort as well, plus the TD-3 doesnt respond to CC messages for the cutoff and stuff either so you have to record it all in realtime which makes it very limited as well. I have TD-3 and a Subsequent 37 (and have owned two Viruses, a Supernova and other hardware) but I still use plenty of soft synths. Plus you wont get a decent polyphonic hardware synth for the price of either of Diva or Serum either.

Yes you are right and It's a lot of work. It's not for everyone. I do like it, it's part of my workflow. I use up to 12 synths and drum machines at ones. I create tracks, running Cubase midi in 30 to 60 min. Then I record a live freestyle set. When I'm ready recording I edit and mix the track. Most of my tracks are done in like 2 to 3 hrs. For me It's just about the moment and to experience a new track.

My biggest complaint here is the way you soloed back and forth. For things like 11 vs 12, we never got to hear 11 in the first half or 12 in the second so I couldn't tell how much of the different sounds came from the instruments vs added notes. Would've been perfect if it played the identical part back to back to really hear the differences vs having to make assumptions on whats the instrument and whats the notes

As I suspected, they sound almost identical in this comparison video. I'm probably going to buy Diva today because there is an particular soundbank for it that I love but that doesn't exist in Serum format. There are other banks that are available for Serum, but not Diva. They could no doubt be "converted" manually by a programmer, but that takes time and effort. For daily use people should choose based on their personal needs: e.g. If they plan to do sound design, which features and GUI would they prefer? If they just want to use presets, which synth offers the best selection at the right price. Both synths are so superb that any musician should be happy with either. It's like comparing Ferraris and Porsches or Lamborghinis; a matter of personal taste, like you said. They all get you from A to B very quickly and can all reach the same destination. You just have to choose the route.

I had to listen twice to realize which is which - and I still wasn't sure which is which in the last example because of the loud transient. - Overall Serum sounds more flat & muddy - with more exciting & beefy midrange. - Diva sounds more "emotional", "deep", "3D".. whatever - at least to me... The filters sound great for a VST. Some examples can lead you on to pick the louder/brighter one, so it takes careful listening. Thanks for making this :)

Why or how would the programming language alter the sound? Your argument is akin to saying "Word documents on Macs read differently to documents on PC". The programs consist of digital mathematical calculations. Ones and zeroes. How they were originally coded is irrelevant. Never mind the fact that Serum probably wasn't written with JUCE. Steve Duda says he used C++. But that doesn't mean much. Not all C++ synths sound the same, nor do JUCE plugins.

You don't compare these 2, completely different. Serum is way more in depth for sound design, closer to something like PhasePlant where you are the one creating the synth basically. Diva is what I would call "premade", like an oldschool midi keyboard. Limited options, but with a certain unique sound to it.

My question...can you hear the different of these plugins in a complete track? I think no and i think nobody in a club ask you what synths use in a track.

that's a nerdy producer question indeed, because honestly NOBODY cares about thoses little details, and that's why i do have Serum (for the more dubstepy/trapy/neuroy basses and stupidly huge modulation capabilities) and Pigments 2 for all the other stuff, including hybrid sounds (samples + synths) and granular sampled sounds :)

That's why all this shit now sounds the same. People don't "care", they just get bored of the same things over and over.

I think subtle differences in sound quality can actually add up to have very different effects on the listener. If I hear somebody play Serum vs. a classic hardware analog synth when there are multiple instances of each it becomes very apparent which is which and I've even had friends of mine listen to some of my music and remark that more analog emulations playing sounds I make in wavetable synths tend to sound nostalgic or "warm" in comparison. I've actually tested this by sending two versions of the same track to some people I was working with where one version used serum and one exclusively used the arturia prophet emulation and replicated the same sounds on each synth and they greatly preferred the prophet emulation because they felt that the track which featured it had more "vibe". IMO laypeople are more sensitive to production and sound design than musicians give them credit and great producers capitalize on it all the time by ensuring that the sounds they use are top notch and compliment their aesthetic. I understand why many people prefer interfaces like Serum or Vital but to say that they sound the same as Diva, Repro, or Arturia collection synths when stacked in a track seems pretty delusional and I don't even consider myself that sensitive to the differences even though they are pretty apparent to me.

@@aaronmetz8707 You make an astute point, one I make myself often frankly! On the one hand, choosing a synth based on these kinds of differences probably makes no quantifiable difference to the end listener, on the other, end listeners have a tendency to identify work that is exceptional and fresh. However, if your goal is to please other producers - forget everything, you'll never please them, they will always have something to say about the sounds and they probably won't buy your music anyway. Even more important than synths, analogue or whatever, are ideas. These make the biggest difference, and I think the music listening public are more open to ideas than other producers.

The question makes no sense bc for starters they use a different kind of synthesis: Diva is a traditional subtractive synth that replicates moog's analogue sound to perfection, with some extra features. Serum FX is a wavetable synth that allows for crazy sound design and creation of new and different sounds based on any imaginable sample source, its a sound design tool made not to replicate any hardware sound, but to create new digital sounds ranging from the very natural to the sci fi world

I think diva and serum cant be compared... Diva is an analog emulation vst and serum is more a digital wavetable vst!

2:12 Not a test to decide which sounds more analog? I don't think serum has ever been considered analog sounding, in fact it's a very digital sounding synth indeed. That's the style - harsh digital sounds. For analog sounding synths, Diva and Zebra are always gonna be the right choice.

Yeah its like comparing a classic car and a modern supercar. Both have their own pros and cons. But if I had to choose based on my type of music I would def choose serum over diva any day. [You will never get weird monster like growls on diva haha]

While I'll admit to having not watched your video-- and it's a fair bit dated-- it nevertheless seems like you're comparing an apple to an orange. AFAIK, Diva's subtractive-analogue and Serum is wavetable. In any case, if you're leaning toward Serum, you might as well consider Vital (and/or Vitalium). As for Diva, while fine, there are a lot of that type of synth around that can be had for free. That said, however, Diva has a nice aftermarket skin (MONA by Plugmon) that makes the synth feel like a new one and might even enable new features, or at least facilitate them. Vital also has many skins to choose from including the one I currently use; the *Serum* *skin* . Skinamarinkydoo means I love youoo...

The search for the best thing, continues - however, what this demonstrates as all such videos demonstrates is that there is not any particularly meaningful difference. Even if you like the sound of one of these synths marginally more, its probably the workflow that is going to decide how much value you get out of it.
