Dave from ‪@vanlifecustoms‬ is with me today. Since he built hundreds of vans in his career as a builder, and since he was there in the early days of vanlife in the U.S., I thought he might be a good reference to help up out with those Google Questions.

Absolute delight! I agree with all that was said. A year into it, Vanlife did not solve my problems, and I was not expecting it. It did, however give me the opportunity to live a simpler lifestyle, time to reflect on myself, and see my problems with another eye. I am now literally off anxiety pills. I still worry about money and a few other things, who doesn't.. but I am now the person I wanted to be all my life, finally at 60. I will probably grow out of it at one point but while it lasts I enjoy every minute of it... except when I am bored with myself. 🤣😂🥰

Rambling opportunity. Wife with dementia diagnosed 2018. Intense crazy time. Care was difficult. Short story kept her home and out of MC facilities. She passed 3/19/23. During those 5 years I watched a lot of RU-vid in the office. I work at home. OOOoo, van life, sounds cool. Many reasons I decided to get a small van. Started building. Then got a small trailer, started building. I was just trying to escape the trap I was in. I love her and cared for her every minute till the end. Looking forward to when she to the end of the suffering for us both. Then I would travel. I thought. She passed then the "who cares about anything now" hit. Hit hard. Recovering from that little by little. Still have the van and trailer ready to go. Haven't even gone camping yet. That is my plan. Problem I have is most people travel to places like I live in. Beautiful McKenzie River valley. Got to figure that one out. Van and trailer prep? Silly. 800 watts solar. 8000 WH of batteries. Other than that simple everyday stuff. Almost there to experiment camping. Hey Linda, I ask her, what's next? She says party on dude. The dude abides. 💖 On edit: What caused this response? Fix things was said. Then I saw Dom clearly again, nodding and agreeing with that thought, suggestion. I know why he was nodding, same for me. Just a million times stronger. 💔❤‍🩹

I live in a van and work locally as a teacher. Therefore my van time is my adventure time and separate from my work. If I still lived in a house I certainly wouldn’t be as adventurous. Also here in the UK many give every penny of their wages to the e gov and big business to live in a house. At least my money goes on adventure and travel. 😁

Thanks! Yes, you are right. You just have to plan a little and make sure you aren't spending too much. However, with prices of gas and with many boondocking places that are closing down on iOverlander (for example), the free-to-roam kind of spirit is now a little harder to find.

Hey Dom, and Dave. Good information. Best bit I thought was don't expect vanlife to fix your personal (or personality) problems. Where ever you go, there you are. We are part timers, longest trip was 3 months. In 5 years we have modified a Shuttle bus, total costs about 17K USD. On our last trip to Florida to visit my daughter we met a guy in a 4WD Mercedes van, with all the bells and whistles at a Alabama rest area. I couldn't help myself and asked how much he had invested in his rig. He thought a bit, said somewhere between 250 and 275K. It doesn't have to cost that much.

GREAT GREAT GREAT!!! video! What a fantastic idea to bring Dave in for an interview/ Q&A. This was one of the most thoughtful, and insightful conversations of it's type I've ever seen. Also, I agree especially with the "connectivity" issue -- I'm always impressed with content creators' ability to both bring me into their lives, so to speak, while also managing the whole video capture & production, editing as well as the research many must do before they even begin the process for any given project or adventure. Any of these components of video production are full jobs unto themselves. Loved the advice Dave, even though much of it may be common sense, it's still good to hear it in simple terms. Cheers!...from North Vancouver

Thanks Adrian! Will make sure Dave reads this. And yes, content creation is among the hardest jobs out there, especially when you document your own adventures. I plan on buying a used van and converting it over time. I generally dont see me buying a home because the thought doesnt make me happy. But i dont want to deal with landlords forever. So van life seems like a good option. I'm not made of money, sure the only cost that really stresses me is the up front cost of the power. Everything else seems managable.

I think we have the same Rs actually, because it came from Latin. Even the rolling R and the Guttural R are the same in Costa Rica if I'm right. Yes, vanlifers end up dressing up the same.

Dave didn't really answer the "Is vanlife expensive" question properly, imo. He was so focused on the cost of the build (because that's what he does) that he didn't seem to understand that the question had to do with ongoing costs, not start up costs. Vanlife, like any other life, CAN be done on a budget. You just have to make choices that align with your budget. For instance, my tank holds 25 gallons of gas (about 95 liters). I get about 17 miles to the gallon, so one tank will take me 425 miles down the road and cost about $125 to fill. If I budget $250 for gas in a given month, I can travel about 850 miles that month. That's more than enough to get me from Seattle to San Francisco, or from Vancouver to Edmonton. Taking an entire month to make that trip gives me the opportunity to enjoy a whole lot of beautiful and interesting places along the way. Sure, there's the start up costs. And you should definitely have a healthy emergency and repair fund. But the day to day cost of vanlife is up to you and the choices you make.
@vanlifesagas
@vanlifesagas 11 месяцев назад
You are right yes. He's a builder - He obviously understood the question with a build focus. Still relevant though. Let me do a video on life costs on the road later on when I get in my new van!
@davewalsh8970
@davewalsh8970 8 месяцев назад
When I think of the expenses I definitely do trend towards thinking of the cost of the build. Its the conversations I have every day. It's been years since I lived in a van and I can't say if it's really expensive to sustain the lifestyle these days. The cost of gas, insurance, and registration then add in maintenance on the vehicle, eating out, eating in.... it all adds up. I think it's really as expensive as you make it. Looking forward to Dom's video on the van life budget. Would love some crowd sourced answers on this one too!

Hey Dom, I have done vanlife in both Canada and Scotland. Most recently living in my van through winter on an Island on the west coast of Scotland. I am in a new relationship now and want to show my home country of Canada next summer doing a 6 week trip accross from Qc to BC or the Yukon. We want to travel at our pace and spot wildlife across Canada. I am looking at van options and was wondering if we could help each other. I was wondering if you were interested in doing a vanlife route through Canada. Or using a blog that we could write. We could rent out a van or try equipment or work together. Even if your not interested, I was wondering if you had any ideas or know someone that has a van that would be interested. Or if your dad is building one for someone on the west coast that need it delivered... I thought it would be worth a try! Talk to you soon!
@vanlifesagas
@vanlifesagas 11 месяцев назад
Love the idea! Renting our own personal vans is harder than it sounds, plus it adds a lot of KMs to the truck itself. Maybe you could rent a van from a company and suggest this project. They always need content! Otherwise, I'll let you know if I hear something that could work!
