I think that what matters much more than any kind of inherited musical ability is the compulsion make music. It's falling absolutely in love with music and having an overwhelming need to make it as much as possible that pushes us through all of the time and effort needed to develop any inherent ability we may or may not have been born with.
I have musical talent such that ever since I was a child I could play piano by ear. I would struggle to read music quickly but if I just heard it once, I could play it. Later on I could easily improvise, jam with others. One thing I never got very good at was singing. I can carry a tune, my range isn't even that bad, but usually I sound like a drunk at a bar. I think with training and practice I can sound OK, but genetically I am not the type of person who naturally sings well.
My normal voice is really boring and just forgetable, the sound doesn't really get fixed when singing so even though I'd love to learn to sing, I know based on how all the sounds I can make are not that good, I just see no point in pursuing that. I have other talents but this is the one thing I really wish I could have for myself
Can anyone learn to sign at least one song beautifully? According to my wife I'm tone-deaf and my government has passed a law making it illegal for me to sign within 150km of anything living... 😢
