I don't understand why so many people doubt SteveY. You can clearly tell by the contracts this year & last year that he's waiting for his draft picks to develop. People should explain to me where the point is in getting a player for 4-8 years & a lot of money when you have so much talent. Everyone practice patience. People still don't understand that Yzerman wants to build a dynasty, we'll see if it works out
Because you can not just build a roster from drafting. You have to have some other players mixed in. And also keep in mind while that they have a good prospect pool, none of them are projected to be elite players, maybe ASP? Danielson is possibly a second line center? And most of your prospects will not pan out, that is the nature of prospects, they fail more then they succeed.
@@joe2.017 Cossa, Kasper, Danielson, ASP, Edvinsson, Augustine, Wallinder, Mazur, Johansson. All of them have a good chance of making it to the NHL. Of course, you don't know how good they are in the NHL until they do. but even if they don't all play for Detroit, one or two of them could be a good option for a trade. But the time is over when you can buy the team you want.
@brrownyy53 no one is saying buy a team, but you cant just play it safe and HOPE that kids develop into good hockey player. You HAVE to make a big trade or a big signing to fill holes. Evidence by the last 2 stanlet cup champions, they made moves that were considered questionable at the time they were made. No NHL team can win off of just drafting and developing, with that being said you still have to be wise when trading and signing guys.
@@joe2.017 Of course you buy your team, what else could it be? Free agents tend not to come from trades. But is Detroit currently a contender? No. I think if they make the playoffs next year, they can do things differently in free agency after the season, but right now it would be stupid. The nice thing is, none of us are making that decision. so either be patient or take Yzerman's job. People act like Detroit is the only team that buys & needs players

I would've understood bringing up Edvinnson and Berggren last year. But the ( current idea) to bring 3 or 4 rookies is insane. There is currently nothing that says we're gonna be better than we were last year

We didn't need to do what Nashville did, but we had needs that again have gone unaddressed. Yzerplan is falling flat.
@patrickgaughan1199 you both obviously don't know NHL and AHL hockey. Gostisbehere and Walman are nowhere near as good defensively as Erik Gustafsson, Simon Edvinsson or Albert Johansson. The Red Wings have one of the top rated farm systems in the league. Jonatan Berggren is a better player than Daniel Sprong and aging David Perron. When the wings make the playoffs this season, I want to see what you fairweather fans will have to say.

It’ll be Mo and Chairot, Ed and Petry to start. Hopefully with Gus and Johansson. They’re not going to bring up Johansson to sit. So they really need to move Atleast 1 of Maata, Chairot, or Holl.
Curious the impact of the Trouba drama. Do the Rangers take a hit reputation wise after the pretty public implosion of a trade? Do we go after Zegras or Ekblad if the Trouba ship has truly sailed? Maybe it can be fixed and go through but it got pretty ugly where I don’t think it can be salvaged.
Well the roster is beyond full, every forward spot filled with 8 defenseman and 4 goalies, i assume there is more moves. Have to at least move one d-man out and move one goaltender to AHL, waived or traded. Mott isnt the move i wanted to see. If ur gonna add one more forward, either it should be a top 2 line guy or let Mazur, Kasper, etc, one of the young guys on the roster. If they get another defenseman, u will have to move 2 off the roster. A wait and see approach until preseason to see where the roster is before i have an opinion one way or another to the direction of this team. Especially considering the Walman move, where it seemed we needed to clear cap so bad that we traded, at the very worst, our top 4 d man. Also, Trouba doesnt look like he is being moved. Necas also sounds like he is being moved either. There is a report that when Carolina lost Guentzal, that they will let Necas go to arb and keep him for a year. Its also reported that Columbus almost acquired Necas for their 1st round pick (4th overall). So much so, that Carolina gave permission to Columbus to negotiate with him, but nothing came of it. Any trade, will probably be something we arent aware of.
What about Robertson from Toronto? Reports that he wants out as well. Sucks that it’s Toronto but maybe give them Berger and Holl/Petry while retaining 1 mil from Holls contract. Doubt they’ll take Holl back, maybe even Maata to clear up that log jam on the left.
If we tank in the first half, Kane will get a trade to a contender. He makes a $1.5 million bonus just for playing 10 games. That tells me that he’s really not expecting to be here after the trade deadline. Just my hunch.
Motte is a great signing. Signals a trade of Andrew Copp is on the horizon. If nobody will take that bum, we can at least move him to wing. Motte can hold it down if the kids aren't ready.
Really interesting situation we’re in right now. Obviously there is more that needs to happen this off season. Most of the signings so far have been filling spots in GR. Dries, Sniveley, Motte, Laggesson, all likely GR guys that can be called up if need be. That means they anticipate some of the GR kids making the roster. Like you guys said, mathematically, a defenseman or goalie needs to go. I expect another trade or two before the roster starts to take shape.
imo trouba did a number on yzerman..stevie wasnt completely expecting trouba not to want to come home...walman, Ghost n 2nd better then Gustafson...something yzerman is cooking
We need a wing to replace ras on the 2nd line and a right d to replace petry in the lineup entirely. Otherwise, I’m happy with this team. Not world beaters yet, but I’m a big fan of this off-season so far. No big money, no long term commitments. Placeholders until our prospects are ready
I'm happy he didn't overpay on free agents this year. Most of these contracts are going to age poorly. The worst one was Tanev getting 4.5x6 from the Leafs.. Wings defense is set up pretty good long term but Trouba for two years would have been nice. I would like to see Axel Sandin Pellikka on the Wings next year. Long-term pairings should be Edvinsson-Seider and Albert Johansson-Axel Sandin Pellikka. But I don't think Petry on the second pair this season is good enough to make the playoffs. Same with our goalie situation. Next year I want to see Cossa on the team. I want Nate Danielson on the team this year. Kasper seems like he will be a career third line center so he will replace Copp at some point. I could see the Wings trading Copp to the Rangers for Trouba or maybe for Laine.
I agree that Trouba would be an upgrade compared to what we gave now and it would give Pelikka two years to get ready. I think it'll take him two years since he's going to the SHL this upcoming season and then he's going to have to get accustomed to the north american ice after that. My guess is in GR
We don't have a ton of cap space, we have to sign Mo and Razor. I expect them to both be $7m at the very team friendly end, could easily be $8m each. Then our cap space disappears and leaves us with maybe $4m.....And that doesn't even include Joe Veleno... True he shouldn't cost much, but we don't have much cap space at all.....
Guys, didn't you listen to Yzerman improvised press conference after day two in Vegas?? He traded Wallman to free up space and couldn't get rid of the players he rather trad. When it comes to foreign name pronunciation - just chill, there's no way you can learn the pronunciation rules of ten different languages. There is no way we start the year with Petry second line holl third line. That’s terrible lol. Everyone knows Petry can’t handle the second line. And holl can’t handle any line. There has to be one more move here. It won’t be a free agent tho. Not enough cap space if there was someone in the ahl that’s rh then I can see this. But there isn’t. Pellicka is not ready. Offensively. I think Detroit is pretty much ready when u add in berggren. And left side def has edvisson and Johansson ready. And I’m more confident with Lyon/talbot than last year. Literally if yzerman moves holl and brings in a rh def im good with this offseason.
Steve is negotiator one on one. I think he’s got a GM or two interested in something. What that is I don’t know. Probably after Mo and Razor get signed. One thing is for sure, he has way more information than the Cap Friendly/ advanced analytics worshipping armchair GM’s.
If steve would have given out the contracts that were given to the top end free agents this year, it would have been way more depressing in 6-7 years. Almost all of the top end free agents this year were overpaid with too much term. Obviously he would have liked to sign some of them, I'm sure he inquired, but he was wise to let other teams take those bad contracts. But like I said, I think he wanted to add high end players. The numbers just weren't right. I'm sure he's still trying to make trades. I was also disappointed until I saw the contracts being handed out. It just wasn't in the cards this year for free agency and he did the right thing by not forcing it. Everyone has been begging for youth for 2 years. We will get that this year. So we should all just be happy with that and let the year play out. Even if we regress.. another top 10 pick might not be bad for us. As painful as that would be, I think we could use another top 10 pick and a swing on a high end forward. Idk, just my take. People are going to be calling for Steve's job. But I think in 5 years everyone's tone will change. I know people can't see that far ahead and do not have patience, I think he's wise to play the long game. And trust me, I want playoff hockey. But not at the price of the future.
I am really starting to question the direction of this team. Yzerman steps on the gas in Bedard draft year, makes terrible FA signings (thank god he didn’t do that this year) and consistently drafts the safe guy. Maybe I’m being hyperbolic, but I see the wings just becoming the next Minnesota Wild.
Gosh quit kissing Yzerman's zzz, he's been a terrible GM in Detroit. It' not about him as a player or TB GM It's all about his 5 yrs as Det GM...Start calling him out. P.S. Yzerman has done a great job in Detroit Considering all the young players and 1st round picks he Inherited from Holland have been busts like Zadina, Svechnikov,Cholowski, to name a few. Also, don't forget about the partial busts taken in the first round like Rasmussen 9Th overall and Valeno 4th line. Holland also didn't leave him a good goalie, but he left Yzerman so Manny bad Contracts and buyouts against the cap. This is a team that will soon be a perrinel cup contender in a few short years! He's building the team the right way!
I don't get how you can say that Yzerman is a terrible GM when the team has improved every single year, and our prospect pool was rated #1 without a top 3 pick. He's doing a good job with what he was given. If the team took multiple steps back, I'd get it, but the team keeps doing better and better each year
Gostisbehere leaving left a big hole that can't be replaced in one off-season. Talbot and Husso will need to have huge bounce backs. Trading Walman and the 2nd was a complete failure.
