the clamping technique with the twine and dowels is great - with so many things on the market, it's easy to forget that simple is sometimes better.

That's actually quite common in Japanese woodworking. If you watch enough Miyadaiku video you'll know.
@ericfrisard2060
@ericfrisard2060 5 лет назад
you have to hammer it with a "round" hammer though, with a square one you'll break wood fibers and they won't expand to their original size anymore
@EntertainAK47

It’s a very common Japanese joinery technique.
@Everfalling

the twine clamping seems good only if you dont intend to keep the edges sharp, right? it seemed to bite into the wood a little on the corners as you tightened. did you plan for that? i suppose you could repair a little bit of denting with some water and an hot iron.
@MGWD
@MGWD 7 лет назад
I guess you could knock up some little wooden right angles on the bandsaw to stop the twine biting into the wood?

That is one sweet looking basket. I also like to use that splines everytime when I work with miters. Maybe I would go for a bit more contrast splines just so they are more visible. Good job.
@jamesmelton7637
@jamesmelton7637 6 лет назад
It can look good when splines or other construction elements stand out, but I think the subtlety of Ishitani's work is a part of its appeal.
@ProffessorSeen1
@ProffessorSeen1 7 лет назад
The twine was very clever. At first I thought the 45 deg mitered joints were a bad choice because of wood movement with temp and moisture content changes but the added reinforcements should be more than enough to keep them together. Yet again meticulously well done. Cutting the miters at an angle on the table saw is a very difficult cut to get 100% accurate.
@tablloyd5

@XavierDery
@XavierDery 7 лет назад
The wood will expand and contract as one, no worries there. Movement within a joint or between parts of furniture (like between a tabletop and its base) is only a concern when the grain of the joined pieces is not parallel. That's because wood fibers swell and shrink according to moisture content, but they practically remain the same length. As others said, beautify work, every new video is a joy to see
