Islands in the Desert Sky Part 1

Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't

Just what the hell is a "Sky Island" in a sea of lowland desert and what does it mean for plant life and the genetic isolation required for endemism and speciation? Did you even know that there were Agave species that grew at elevations of 11,200'?
Your contributions support this content. It sounds clichéd, but it's true. Whether it's travel expenses, vehicle repair, or medical costs for urushiol poisoning (or rockfalls, beestings, hand slices, toxic sap, etc), your financial support allows this content to continue so the beauty of Earth's flora can be made accessible to the rest of us in the degenerate public. At a time when so much is disappearing beneath the human footprint, CPBBD is willing to do whatever it takes to document these plant species and the ecological communities they are a part of before they're gone for good.
Plants make people feel good. Plants quell homicidal (and suicidal!) thoughts. To support Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't, consider donating a few bucks to the venmo account "societyishell" or the PayPal account email crimepaysbutbotanydoesnt@gmail.com...
Or consider becoming a patreon supporter @ :
/ crimepaysbutbotanydoesnt
Buy some CPBBD merch (shirts, hats, hoodies n' what the shit) available for sale at :
www.bonfire.co...
To purchase stickers, venmo 15 bucks to "societyishell" and leave your address in the comments.
Plants ID questions or reading list suggestions can be sent to crimepaysbutbotanydoesnt@gmail.com
Thanks, GFY.

I wonder if you have ever been to West Virginia? We have some very unique plant biodiversity here. One place in particular is called Cranberry Glades. The Cranberry Glades consists of four bogs whose plant and animal life is similar to that found in the bogs or "muskegs" of the north. This life spread southward with the changing climatic conditions that allowed glaciers to creep across the northern part of our continent. Several species ended their migration here, and the Cranberry Glades are now the southern-most point in North America where some of these life forms are found. It's basically a little piece of Canadian habitat stranded thousands of years ago in the high mountain valleys in a small area of W.V.

I'm just across the border from lol the wva of wva McDowell county in tazewell co va. Do we not here in the Appalachians have the most biodiversity out for any where on the globe? Am I right on that? Just here in my region I find wild the the coal fields have almost a completely different forest than there is in the ridge and valley. I'm sure it has to do with the difference between sandstone and limestone. Regardless I'd like to check out the cranberry glades just have never been in that part of the state.

@@jakeofallterrains9048 from what I gather their the oldest known mountains on earth. Then what we see today mountain wise are just eroded remnants of what once was. I live one mile from the St Clair fault where the subcontinent attached to the north American craton on the side of a giant sinkhole so I've been fascinated by these mountains. People can have Florida or California leave me here in Appalachia.

@@mattlloyd9054 "ain't no place I'd rather be." I live on a hillside, up a gully wash, with a spring fed creek 50 feet below. As a result of Tony's way of life I've starting being less of a mouth breather and started appreciating the forest for the flowers. There's just so much trillium around here!
@mattlloyd9054
@mattlloyd9054 2 года назад
@@jakeofallterrains9048 I noticed a large number of trillium a couple weeks ago in bloom do they bloom heavily every year? This one holler middle creek in cedar bluff va had an entire hillside covered in it somehow I've never noticed it before. I find this ironic you mentioned it. I went back to dig a couple to bring home last week and all the flowers were gone so I didn't bother. Lol so I didn't murder any from my hoarding of plants. The umbrella magnolia started my sick fascination with plants as a child where it looks so outta place, good God I've killed too many of those but I did get one to live and it's getting huge, so the rest are safe lol.

11:10 Ah yes the horsicus ponifica sp assholiticus. Make sure you identify the front before petting. The rear has a nice kick to it. These kinds of plants require more water and also flower daily. This flower just drops on the ground and has a very strong smell. These plants have been very adaptable and can even help moving the land and helping other plants grow by plowing under the right conditions.
