Brings back memories of school camping trips to Bembridge back in the late 70's. On one of the days we went on a ramble from Robin Hill, all the way back to camp at Bembridge. When we got to St Helen's - the opposite side of the harbour to Bembridge, our teachers decided that instead of walking all the way around the harbour, which was a fair old distance, we would cut across the mouth of the harbour seeing that the tide was low. So off we all went, in the middle of the channel the water was up to the top of our chests! But it was all one big adventure for us. Can you imagine teachers doing that today with a gang of 11 - 16 year old pupils? I think not! Not been back to the island for many years now, watching these video's makes me want to visit it once again.

Hi Ant. Around 58 years ago so mid sixties my parents used to take me on holiday to the Island and we stayed at a hotel in Ryde and often walked to that wonderful beach at Puckpool. Back then there was a Butlins holiday nearby I think. Such great memories 👍

What a great watch. Not to ask a "Nerd" type of question but do the utilities (gas, water, commutations and electrical) run under the water, let's say, from Hurst Castle on the mainland to, let's say again, to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight, I know a total nerd question but that's just me. Ant, those have to be the Slowest horses I have ever seen..... My takeaway: What a place to live. It would be nice to spend a few days in Appley Tower, what a view.

So lucky with the weather! Ryde pier is one of the most significant in the UK for its size and antiquity. You were walking on a replacement for the tramway which was among the first to use electricity. The lierhead used to have a full-sized dance hall and 6 rail served platforms!

I’m looking forward to when you walk past somewhere we stayed in east Cowes. Rosetta cottage (NT) where Randolph Churchill met his wife. We had a lovely time except it was the worst weather we have ever had in the UK. We felt we were under water. Great place. Great video

So love watching your videos, especially now you are covering the IOW where I lived for 57 years until moving to the New Forest (where I can still get views of the island) last year. I grew up and lived in Ryde and appreciate the memories you have reminded me of as I grew up and explored this particular area. Thank you 👍👍

Bit late to the party, as usual for me , but did you miss the gun emplacements on Culver Down , or just not put them in the vlog ? If you were unaware, you missed a treat. They're very extensive, and have WW2 history . Also up there , in the grasslands of the down are some wrought iron mooring rings for barrage ballons. More history there for those who know. Truly, Wight is beautiful , and that's saying something from a committed northener such as I ! Hope you got a 'scoop' or two in the Spyglass of the Fisherman's Rest . Thanx for doing this series , and keep up the good work . Have you noticed the 'quality of light' down there ? The kind of thing that gets artists all doey-eyed. Marvellous !

Ey up mi duck. The "u" in Duver is pronounced the same way as someone in the north prounounces it in the word duck. Ryde Pier is, apparently, the oldest pleasure pier in the world, it's also the second longest, with Southend Pier being the longest. While I am bragging (sorry) can I point out that Ryde Carnival (held late August/earlt September) is the oldest carnival in the UK. Also, Blackgang Chine on the south coast is the location of the UK's oldest theme park. Great video showcasing the island that has been my home for 38 years, thank you.

The st Helens duver is pronounced exactly as spelt d-uh-ver. The grass area you walked across that can be seen from the drone used to be a golf course, the club house is still there and can be hired from NT as a holiday cottage.

Ah an area I know well, depending on the tide it is possible to walk along the beach from Bembridge to Seaview. Btw Duver is pronounced as in the bird Dove -er. I always thought that metal cog was an old winch to bring boats up onto the beach.

Ryde Pier is single track, the other track hasn’t been used for years and is not connected, the double track starts just before the tunnel. You were walking on the former tram track, recently restored as a pedestrian walkway.
