Want to know what Israelis and Palestinians in the Middle East really think about the conflict? Ask a question and I will get answers.
People ask Israeli Jews questions. I go out and ask random people to answer. Niv from the USA asks "Do Israelis believe Palestinians are indigenous to the land?"

among the Palestinians you also have Moors who had conquered the Iberian peninsula from Morocco generations after after Spain and Portugal took their land back Salaheddine asked them to take back Jerusalem and gave them the neighborhood of the Moroccans this neighborhood has been demolished by the Israelis for the wailing wall the Moors are largely Amazigh and some mixed with Arabic Amazigh Ibersch Italian West African and Serfadic and Ashkenazi Jewish and from earlier with the Phoenician the original inhabitants of the Canaan. you have different Palestinian some Arab so Semitch also have Jewish dna in them so you have a chance that some Palestinian such as the Christians and Muslims have more right than for example the Ashkenazi Jews because they are more European the Serfadic have a lot of Amazigh North African and Iberian in them but also Serphad Jewish. i think the current Egyptians are the original jews and the jews from yemen the rest are all mixed race. so Muslim and Christians from Egypt are Jewish in origin

I believe both groups are native to the land. Many of the Jews have come in waves throughout recent history, and this applies to the Palestinian Arabs as well. Looking back in history, the Jews have a 3000 year old history in the country, eventhough only tiny minorities of them lived on for the entire period (often they were expelled by empires, like the Roman). The Palestinian Arabs are most likely a mix of Jews and other peoples of the land, and they were mixed with the Arab Muslims who invaded in the 630s. As such, both groups have thousands of years in the land, even though the majority of the modern Jews arrived pretty late. Consequently, both groups have a claim to the land. The irony is that Jews and Palestinians probably are related ethnically because of inter-marriage...

So I studied a biological demographic study of Palestinians and Jews from Israel and Palestine. What was discovered is that they shared almost identical ancestry. Meaning biologically speaking Palestinians are born of the Levant and have DNA markers of Phoenicians, Canaanites, ancient Jewish, Anatolian, Roman, and Greek. They like the modern Jews shared almost identical ancestry. Basically the study posited that the only difference between a Jew, a Muslim, and a Christian from Palestine-Israel is cultural, linguistic and religious identity, not ethnic or racial admixtures which would make them biologically distinct. Both are in fact indigenous, but some descend from exiles and others from those who more or less remained in the lands which are contested. Some married and produced children with Christian Crusaders/Arabic Conquers/Romans/ Turks but remained mostly the same people biologically.

+Mohamed Abdelhack This will help. The Muslim history in the region of Palestine began in the 630s during the great Muslim conquests. The Roman region of Palestine was conquered by the Muslim armies of the Caliphate (Islamic Empire) under Caliph Umar. Muslim presence in the region has since continued to develop to the present time for nearly 1400 years. Islam was first introduced to the region of Palestine during the Muslim conquests of the 7th century, when armies from the Arabian Peninsula under the Rashidun Caliphate conquered a territory previously under the control of the Byzantine Empire. The Islamization of Palestine occurred as a result of the Islamic conquest in 640. It was a long process that included immigration of Muslim Arabs, as well as other Muslims, from other regions, as well as conversion to Islam by some of the indigenous Christian, Samaritan and Jewish population of the area. Islam did not become the majority religion of Palestine until at least the 9th century and possibly even as late as the Mamluk era (1250-1516). This occurred simultaneously with acculturation of the locals into Arab identity and the establishment of Arabic as the lingua franca, which eventually became their sole vernacular. The Jewish people have long maintained both physical and religious ties with the land of Israel. The first appearance of the name "Israel" in the historic record is the Merneptah Stele, circa 1200 BCE. During the biblical period, two kingdoms occupied the highland zone, the Kingdom of Israel (Samaria) in the north and the Kingdom of Judah in the south. The Kingdom of Israel was conquered by the Neo-Assyrian Empire (circa 722 BCE) and the Kingdom of Judah by the Neo-Babylonian Empire (586 BCE). Upon the defeat of the Babylonian Empire by the Achaemenid Empire under Cyrus the Great, the Jewish elite returned to Jerusalem and the Second Temple was built. In 165 BCE, the independent Hasmonean Kingdom was established. Although coming under the sway of various empires and home to a variety of ethnicities, the area of ancient Israel was predominantly Jewish until the Jewish-Roman wars. After this time, Jews became a minority in most regions, except Galilee. The area became increasingly Christian after the 3rd century, though the percentages of Christians and Jews are unknown, the former perhaps coming to predominate in urban areas, the latter remaining in rural areas Jewish settlements declined from over 160 to 50 by the time of the Muslim conquest. Michael Avi-Yonah calculated that Jews constituted 10-15% of Palestine's population by the time of the Persian invasion of 614 while Moshe Gil claims that Jews constituted the majority of the population until 7th century Muslim conquest. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muslim_history_in_Palestine_region en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamization_of_Palestine en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islam_in_Palestine en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Jews_and_Judaism_in_the_Land_of_Israel

Well, if you do not conflate the terms Palestinians and Muslims then this is no counter-argument, the term Palestinian contains everyone who called this land home before the whole mess of the state of Israel began and if the Jew refugees had decided to stay in the land without kicking out the people who were living there they would have become Palestinians themselves... The same thing happened to the whole region, even Palestine had some Arabic-speaking tribes unlike places like Morocco, Tunisia... But they are the same people of the land, they mixed up with other races which is inevitable due to the position of this piece of land but that doesn't make them outsiders. Some residents were Jewish and converted to other religions some long time ago, are those also considered outsiders?

@@maidy199 I agree with the first part, Jewish Israeli's are no less Palestinians than Arabs as fact is the word Palestinian was used for all who were in the land during the British times here. Before the British came, (i.e. Ottoman empire) neither Jew nor Arab was calling him or herself Palestinian. Nobody would have even thought to connect back to Roman Palestine, except maybe some historians or Christians. Your statement about "if the Jew refugees had decided to stay in the land without kicking out the people who were living there" is ridiculous. I don't want to get into a never ending argument about this place and time in modern history because it has become so politicized. But to make it seem like Israel just kicked people out without mentioning. A) Arab refusing any compromise such as the 1947 Partition which would have led to the two states, or how about not mentioning that many left on their own because their leaders told them to because they thought they would return when Israel was defeated. It's a sad reality for these people because it was their leaders who screwed them over (and them kept using them as political prisoners) and I am not claiming that Israel was perfectly innocent and did nothing wrong or kicked nobody out, I'm sure some were kicked out, it was a harsh war. but the way you make this out to be one sided is wrong and unfair. Anyway what is more important than the past is the present. There are two peoples here now and we need a solution for every suffering or innocent person on both sides such as the two state solution.

Sonny Day, That doesn't mean that the current people claiming to Palestinians have any connection to ancient groups who lived there just because they use similar sounding names. There was once a Kingdom of Prussia as well but if you make a political group called "State of Prossia" (spelled differently but you claim to "be them".) that doesn't mean you now have a claim to the former lands of Prussia. "The State of Palestine" is a political group formed in 1988 ffs, and they deliberately chose that name to lay claim to everything that has to do with the name's former usage. It's exactly like someone making a "State of Balkan" group and claiming the entire Balkan region. You also saw the same with the whole Macedonia - Greece stuff. Today's Macedonians claimed to be the original people of that area, they claimed part of Greek history as their own, their claimed historical Greek heroes as theirs etc. because they used the same name as the Greeks had previously used. Today's Macedonians are a (relatively speaking) new people to that area and when you hear about "Macedon" in history, that's Greek history, Greek peoples etc. Just because a new group shows up and adopts words, names etc. of the ancient past, doesn't mean that they're the same group.

Palestinians seem to be mostly descendants of the native Jewish and Christian Levantines that remained in Israel after Roman occupation and converted to Islam during the Arab expansion. They are just as equally tied to ancient Israel as the Jews. “We propose that the Y chromosomes in Palestinian Arabs and Bedouin represent, to a large extent, early lineages derived from the Neolithic inhabitants of the area and additional lineages from more-recent population movements. The early lineages are part of the common chromosome pool shared with Jews (Nebel et al. 2000).” (The Y Chromosome Pool of Jews as Part of the Genetic Landscape of the Middle East |Nebel et al. 2000) “According to historical records part, or perhaps the majority, of the Moslem Arabs in this country descended from local inhabitants, mainly Christians and Jews, who had converted after the Islamic conquest in the seventh century AD (Shaban 1971; Mc Graw Donner 1981). These local inhabitants, in turn, were descendants of the core population that had lived in the area for several centuries, some even since prehistorical times (Gil 1992). On the other hand, the ancestors of the great majority of present-day Jews lived outside this region for almost two millennia. Thus, our findings are in good agreement with historical evidence and suggest genetic continuity in both populations despite their long separation and the wide geographic dispersal of Jews.” (High-resolution Y chromosome haplotypes of Israeli and Palestinian Arabs reveal geographic substructure and substantial overlap with haplotypes of Jews | Nebel et al.2000)

also. Israelites as a people arose in the late bronze age. Based on some data I've seen, Jews do not have early bronze age canaanite dna, let alone neolithic. So palestinians having neolithic dna from the region doesn't support them being descended from Jews, quite the opposite actually.

That’s a haplogroup study. Haplogroups amount to less than 1% of a person’s DNA when Y-Chromosomes are tested. You must consider autosomal and whole genome testing which considers 100% of a person’s ancestry. If we look at the autosomal results of the ancient Canaanites we can see that Palestinians are far more related to them than Jews are (and this more indigenous). Take for example this distance chart here, using an Iron Age Canaanite sample from the Megiddo archeological site, it shows Palestinians are the closest in genetic distance by far and that all Levantines are closer in distance than all Jews with Ashkenazi Jews being the furthest away and Iraqi Jews being the closest Jews but still equidistant. More green and smaller number is closer in distance (genetically more similar to the ancient sample) and more purple and a larger number is more distant (genetically least similar to ancient sample): Megiddo_IA:14517: ibb.co/yVNX2LN

lol Moshe didn't seem to know much. In 1867, Palestine had around 500,000 inhabitants. The American writer he referred to was Mark Twain, who said that Palestine was barren at the time. He also made similar statements about Greece and the South-Eastern United States. A simple population survey shows that Palestine was inhabited by Arabs and a very small percentage of Jews- around 1% at the time. Of course, Moshe would know this IF he was from the land. But something tells me that Moshe is a Zionist immigrant :)
@maracohen5930
@maracohen5930 10 лет назад
Well, I come from Old Yishuv (Hebron), and Mark Twain wasn't the only writer who went through that area of the Levant. Turkish Tax Rolls and population counts, (The Effendi Class being the Tax Collectors via Tax Farming, as well as the largest landowners) show that large parts of the Levant were depopulated. Continuing aridity to desertification due to climate change and poor agricultural practices had caused this. Bedouin Raiders took Fellehin slaves for their Date Farms, etc. And the mixed ethnic population now called "Palestinians" was on the decline. It was those Zionist Jews whose ancestors had been marched out of the Levant by the Romans who brought western medicine, new agricultural practices, scientific methodologies, and the willingness to work, changed land nobody except them really wanted...and they bought from the Turks, the Effendi, and Absentee Landlords who didn't give a thought to their Sharecroppers, the Fellehin population, whose life expectancy was short, and who never ruled themselves above the Mukhtar Level. This was a backwater of the Ottoman Empire, and any real life in the area was in Beirut and Syria. Much of the land was dying and dead before the Zionist Jews came. The Guela was a malarial swamp. They drained it, made good farmland, people returned. The Grand Mufti's Family sold land to Zionist Organizations, and even pushed their own Felleh Share Croppers off of it in order to sell it. The Turks approved land sales to Jews from Europe that the Effendi wanted to make....and then the Grand Mufti refused to live under Hashemite Rule, and he wanted Kingship for his own Family....and the Brits wouldn't give it to him. He was busy trying to kill Jews and take their Lands long before Israel existed, and when the other Nation States that resulted from the Sykes-Picot Agreement were recognized, He and his refused the one given to the "Palestinians" in order to shut him up....his red headed, blue eyed self had spent WW2 in Berlin licking Hitler's Ass and setting up Muslim Regiments for him. All because he didn't want a Hashemite over him. His Family's hereditary rule of all the Muslims of the Area? He was a seriously bad one...as were his family of converted Christians who wanted to keep the lands their Crusading had taken for them....no matter what....so when folks start making sounds about Indigenous and Native, who is who....remember this, the Levant was a backwater of corruption, slaving and poverty where the Turks didn't care what happened as long as they got their taxes, and they maintained control.....The Brits and French did what they do best, look out for their own best interests, and made promises they couldn't keep....so no Daviess87, you don't know your history of the Levant, and you shouldn't be spouting until you do. Go, spend some time in the Turkish Archives, in the British Archives.....and see what was actually written, recorded over the hundreds of years regarding the dunams of Land laid waste in that area....

Spoken language aside, is there a way to tell the difference between a Jew and a Palestinian? I'm watching your videos and the people all look the same to me but I've never been to Israel or the area in general so I understand that there could be subtle appearance differences that are specific to an ethnicity. In other words, are there any inherent differences in the appearance (apart from language and clothing) between the two peoples?

Apart from what you mentioned, there's not that much of a difference (in appearance) between Jews and Palestinians. There are Jews that look white, there are Jews that look like the stereotypical West Asian/Middle Easterner, and there are Jews that look black (like the Ethiopians). Likewise for the Palestinians, there are some that look white, there are others that look like the stereotypical Middle Easterner/West Asian, and there are even some that look black too. Arabicized Peoples such as the Amazigh or the Kurds have maintained their cultural ties to their pre Arab Conquest past to maintain their Indigenous identities. “Palestinian” is an Arab Nationalist identity, invented as part of a 1964 propaganda campaign for the mixed Arab and Arabicized groups that are part of the old Ottoman subject population that called itself “Arabs”, Greek, Sudanese, Circassian, Chechen, and the other groups brought in by the Ottomans, on top of remnants of those in residence prior, all the way back to the Roman conquest and colonization, with the additions of the illegal Arab migrations into the Mandatory during the Brit Administration. The shocking number of “racist” idiots who know nothing regarding Indigenous Studies and Academic Disciplines, nonetheless historical illiteracy is appalling. They can contest all they want to. Doesn’t mean a hill of beans.

What I find interesting from these interviews is that jews from different parts of the world look very much like natives of those countries. So it would seem that a high degree of intermarriage took place or there was some conversion to Judaism. Either way their own claim of being indigenous is undermined.

Jewish culture is matrilineal. So if a Jewish woman 2000 years ago married some European man, the kids would still be Jewish, and as it continued (the Jewish daughter marries another European local man and they make kids who become Jewish by default because their mum is Jewish etc), they begin to look like blond/white/blue-eyed people, but are still officially (and genetically) and culturally Jewish. Because the mum has to be Jewish. So we can consider these European-looking Jews to be direct descendants of the ones who landed in Europe after the ransacking of Jerusalem by the Roman army.

@Lena Samuel I agree - and most Jews carry Canaanite DNA (as do other inhabitants of the Levant). A lot depends on how you define 'indigenous,' but as the Jews did not assimilate in the Diaspora and still speak a Phoenician language and practice an ancient Levantine religion, they have a very strong claim to being indigenous (I believe that most modern historians believe that the Ancient Israelites emerged from the Canaanites rather than having conquered them as per the Biblical accounts, and DNA studies seem to back this up). On the other hand, most Levantine 'Arabs' have very little Arab ancestry (this is true of many Arabic speaking peoples - most Arabic speaking North Africans are not Arabs but Amazighs) - much depends, I think, on specific family histories, as some families came from the Balkans, Turkey, Kurdistan, Egypt, etc. - but I think the Jews, Lebanese and most Palestinians descend from the same Canaanite/Phoenician populations. For myself, I'm not sure if it is all that important - Israelis and Palestinians need to look to the future and find a way to make peace.

+‫המילניום ברושים‬‎ You do know what you just said ( about no arabs before 300 years ) right? In the region Palestine/Israel many Arabs among others have been living t least since Arabs first conquered it. And semites of many different tribes etc ( including jews) have been living in the region for much longer. I also disagree with nabil who concludes Jewish claims are baseless...which though complicated is not true. Yes jews have been mixing with others but so has every other group of people...maybe jews much less than others.

+Nabil Arifi jews have been mixing with other peoples like every other group of people...jews and armenians and some other groups have done that much less than others. For example most arabs now were not arabs 1000 years ago..many were semites but not arabs whcih makes it a bit complicated. Jews did fled to every corner of the world, you are not saying that some chinese or europeans just at some point decided to become jews. Yes there have been intermarriages and genetical differences with the original populations ( yes populations because even in the early jewish history there were different jewish communities and even states) . It is a complicated discussion and we should not make caricature out of it and compare it with a black guy who claims heritage from the farao's. First we don't know if and which farao's were black or mixed. There is nothing to suggest it. Personally i think there is a possibility that few blacks and more mixed farao's could have been. Ancient times racism as we know it was not yet present as was nationalism as we know it.

inaccurate....turks have about 6-18% turkic genetics which makes the people indigenous to that place. Arabs were probably something like that warriors came and settled in mixed with people living there ....i heard genetics say that jews and palestinians share a lot of similar genes which would make sense because all over the world it seems to work like that. 2 other enemies azerbaijanis and armenians have exact same genetics...but different language/ religion and hate each other looooool

Indigenous meaning "First Peoples", "Native" meaning locally born. Everyone born on the Levant is "Native", nobody there is "Indigenous", (unless you count yourselves as Neanderthals...) unless you count Indigenous to the whole Region. (PS: The "Philistines" were Sea People, like the Cretans-not Indigenous, they had City States on the Coast. The Romans took the Philistine name when they moved other subject populations in from around the Region, as they frog marched most of the Jews out after the Bar-Kochba Rebellion as slaves to the Legion and transported them to Europe (where Romans come from). The Byzantines and Persians ruled, and then the Arab invasion from the Hejaz happened. All very well documented history of the Levant. No one there is Indigenous, everyone born there is Native.

mara cohen, precisely. Indigenous means the original people group who inhabited a geographical area. Did the Palestinians inhabit Israel from thousands of years ago? No, they have, what, 200 years of history in Israel? (And I agree Palestine is a very bad name; how about the Levant?) The Jewish have a time period that dates back several millennia, even thousands of years before the were put in the exile in 70AD. The BDS, Anti-Israeli groups will say that the Ashkenazim are "White" Europeans and don't have any place in the Land. They don't believe or realize that they are somehow Semitic because they look White, but there are certain diseases like Tay Sachs that occur just about exclusively in the Ashkenazim. And the Jewish Bible is an excellent source of historical events.

And the correct answer is: some Palestinians are indigenous. The land was mostly vacant and inhospitable a century ago. The Palestinians there at the time were mostly descendants of Jews forced to convert to Islam long after the Roman conquest and renaming of Israel / Judea to Palestine, itself Latin for Phillistine, which themselves were a people of Aegan origins. The Muslims that came for work after Jews started to rebuild came from a variety of neighboring lands. Exact %? Genetic studies are needed.
