Im a city boi who dont know jack about farming but, does it hurt the cow when you peel its hoof like apple skins?
@ddandrews6472
@ddandrews6472 2 года назад
@@maxturbo45 Of course it does, but there is no other way. Lets say you inject a little bit of local anesthetic to the corium, then you have added problems of the cow not feeling the hoof and end up hurting itself more because it lost the feeling of the hoof/leg. Imagine your toe nail getting ground to the root and cut with a knife. It will hurt. I guess the reason for these cows to develop these conditions is because we selectively bred them to be bigger, heavier to get more milk out of them, but their hooves hasn't been naturally(artificially) selected to get bigger and stronger(evolutionary biology lingo). So, these heavier cows keep putting extra pressure on the relatively weaker hooves while they are getting heavier and heavier in the rear end, and the end result is the hoof developing issues like this. As you can see, we don't see any videos of front hooves because they don't get anywhere as much trouble as the hind legs, because most of the weight is concentrated in the hind part of the animal. I hope there should be preventative techniques like fitting a rubber/shock-weight absorbing shoe to the rear hooves, but I guess nobody does that. Perhaps because it is either too expensive, creates more maintenance work or has it's own negative side effects.
@mellewedin8221
@mellewedin8221 2 года назад
I can tell that one claw is a major problem for the poor girl. She can hardly stand you trimming it. I can tell my her weight shifts when you trim it. I am new to this channel. Do these cows have issues from the flooring in the barn? Like it's normally not a issue in my cow county. Mastitis is the biggest issue most farmers deal with or abscesses on their heels and hocks. Some times their knees.
@ddandrews6472
@ddandrews6472 2 года назад
@@mellewedin8221 Well..the issues we see in these channels are abscesses and ulcers in their heels. Without a doubt the type of flooring contributes to the problem. It all depends on how common these problems are in terms of number of cows and number of times. I've been wondering whether it is possible to avoid the problems all together by supporting the cows with some kind of carefully designed shoes to absorb the weight and occasional shock. We do that with ourselves and horses. Since the cow hoof is different from the horse, it obviously need a different approach. From what I see in these channels it looks like these problems are common, which validates the need of preventative treatment than waiting for the cows to develop these problems.

I'm in Australia and heaps of cows here. I'm in around WA Perth region so basically 15 minutes it's outback and the cows are there in the farms. But heaps of loading zones where they keep the cows in gravel that I'm not sure about and probably keep it more hidden so people don't find out about it and cause a scene. Probably more like a whole entire company or farm warehouse combined. So wasn't aware of how the pour cows can get so much damage to the main things they live on. Their legs. It's pretty sad and frustrating but I'm glad yes there are people out there that have these jobs to help the cows. But unfortunately in the first place if the cows were just in a damn grassed farm yard then these problems wouldn't exist. Anywho that's life...

This is fascinating. I never knew cows had such soft hooves like that. So when you cut away lesions like that, is it real sensitive to the cow like how you may cut your nails too short and the skin underneath is super sensitive? When the cow stamped her front feet, was it because of the relief or was it because that newer Corium underneath is sensitive? Are you a vet? How did you get such a cool job like this? I love animals and medical things like this! And thank you for the time you take to snipe and explain what you’re doing 😃

You've said before that you generally don't notice injuries early on because the cow just compensates for it and doesn't become lame until infection sets in and just redistributing weight doesn't work any more. But if the cows physically can't take weight off the medial claw, how did this get as bad as it was before anyone noticed? It would seem that, unless the lesion progressed extremely quickly, she would have been lame and limping for quite a while before getting to this stage.

They did notice and she was moved to a hospital pen until I could treat her.

The way your being so gentle with the cow shows how much you really care about them & don’t want to cause them pain . I love watch these videos even though I know nothing about cows or farming lol.

Question? Before you treat the hoof, do you numb the area? I find these to be very interesting videos and like to learn new things.

I have to say I don't know why I find your video so fascinating other than the fact that the way you clean and repair the hooves is artistic somehow I'm a sculptor and an artist also love animals but you're really very good at what you do. You seem very caring and really really concerned with the animal at question. Great work you are in the field that you were meant to be in. These animals need you. Good job.

Now once you have to cut in that deep to remove the bad stuff, what is the spray you keep dousing the claw with. Does it numb that soft tissue or just clean it out?
@eha005
@eha005 2 года назад
It is diluted clorhexidine solution to clean it. Antiseptic 🙂
@Thiccarus13

Antiseptic that does happen to have some pain relief, but that doesn't seem to be the main purpose of it

Nate I appreciate your care you take and how you also wear protective gear!! The gentle care is so clear and how you obviously are doing your upmost to provide pain relieving and non painful treatment. I appreciate the way you move giving yourself the time to do things right and not fast in areas that shouldn't be! Thank you and thank you for the explanation and education! I was shocked when you pointed out that dot was part of the problem!
