It May Be This Easy After All!! 

A friend of mine had a 1980's Citroen diesel that had a faulty heater plug on it. Every morning he'd turn on the ignition and 'Short' that plug direct from the battery with a length of old jumper cable. I ripped him a new one for doing it! Every morning for SIX months!!! His excuse, "It only does it when the engine's cold" and "I haven't had time to do it yet". All of them got changed that day!!

I have a 2016 Accord I purchased new and it still has the battery from the factory. I've kept the cells topped off with DI water from work and have never run it dead. 7 years old!

I worked in a shop and 5 Mexican guys pushed a car into the lot on a hot, humid day. They pushed it about 2 miles. They had put a new battery on it but it still doesn't start. I looked at the battery and saw one red post and one black post. They never removed the protective covers on the posts. I felt sorry for them and got it right and didn't charge them.

Yes, a bad battery can wreak havoc with a modern computer control system! I had an '07 Explorer with the 6R60 transmission, and became aware that Ford had replaced it with the 6R80 because of premature failures of the 6R60. So when mine started acting up, my first thought was that I drove it too hard and needed a new trans. The same car also killed the battery if it sat for more than a few days. And because I had several cars, it sat a lot. Ford replaced the battery twice under warranty, and for 10 years after that, I never found a reason to replace it until after I put a trickle charger under the hood. When I put in the new battery, all of my "transmission" problems just vanished.

I always use a touch of baking soda in the water.... Then clean the ends the best you can... I then apply a small amount of dielectric grease on cable ends, this never failed me and the corrosion is really non existent. Hey Kenny your home videos rock

I always tell people that disconnecting the negative battery terminal is the recommended way. But you have to be careful where you rest it bc if it touches any metal it will arch and spark like crazy!

There's only 3 companies that make automotive batteries. In several online test the Walmart battery came out on top ! I have one in my RAM. 4 years now and going strong. Cost almost half of the auto parts stores. You had to do it twice because you love your job !

Years of being an electrician, anytime I change a battery in my truck I use Noalox. We use that when we make terminations of 2 different metals. For instance copper to aluminum. I've found that a light coating on the terminals seems to help keep corrosion from forming.

Just changed the battery on my wife’s car. 2019 Lexus nx300. . Warranty just expired. We bought it used in the fall of 2021. In our case it’s from lack of use. Her car sits for long periods of time. I have set up a trickle charger on the new battery. The car sits in the garage all winter. She doesn’t drive much in the winter. Northern Canada winters are long and cold.

Great video as always Kenny. Whenever I service the battery in my vehicles I use baking soda to neutralize the acid on the terminals, battery, battery box, and battery support under the battery box. I then rinse thoroughly, dry and treat any rusted areas with a rust converter like Ospho, let it dry and then spray a little paint. Battery terminals get a spray of sealant. Never had a non-start problem except for a dead or defective battery.

No mistakes on your part Kenny you were just testing your viewers if we are paying attention. Also, I’ve had to replace several batteries in the last five years. I think the quality in them have just gone downhill.

Retired now but I operated a detail and rustproofing shop and also worked at a GM Dealership. My habit was to take the keys and put them on the roof when I opened the door to get out. It was a good habit that I still do in my shop at home.

The 318 and 360 have been around since late 1960's

This is a common issue on a lot of the Hondas. People have been putting in larger varieties to resolve the issue since the small ones fail too often. I'm sure they are just doing this for cost savings.

As for the Magnum engine I have an ‘88 D-150 with 318. It is the first year of Throttle Body Injection, however Chrysler’s first year of the Magnum engines came in ’93. I only know because I was working in a CDJ Parts Department at that time and it stuck in my mind all these years. One odd tidbit. Kenny do you remember that ’93 had a different key blank and it was the only year it was ever used? Y155 Also, I have an older Accord with the same battery and placement locations. You really upgraded going to an AGM. Most people will use flooded batteries under the hood for that application. I haven’t seen a battery proration in quite some time. Most batteries are just 24 or 36 month warranty. The years of 5 year, etc prorated use are THANKFULLY gone. That was a pain calculating what was warranty and what the customer owed, and then dealing with the customer and explaining how that system worked for those uneducated to this.

Good stuff, not everyone knows the basics and it will help a LOT of people and give them confidence to try it themselves. No doubt a lot of girls will be crying about the content, they just need to dry their eyes and get on with it.

Hey Kenny never put a battery on the concrete it will discharge the battery, I ruined a brand new battery by setting it onto cement. Use a block of wood if you need to set it down on the concrete

I agree about a lot of Duralast products but in 2007 I put a Duralast Gold battery in my 97 Chrysler Concorde. 2 1/2 years later the alternator went out and it was a few days before I could get a new one. 2 weeks later the battery stopped holding a charge, so I took it to Auto Zone and after they tested it they handed me a brand new one at no charge. No idea if their batteries have changed since then. I had no further problems with it after that.

Thanks Kenny for some good advice. Battery maintenance is important and personal if we consider the method. I'll go along with about anything unless it involves baking soda. That can kill a battery in a heartbeat under the right conditions. Keep em coning andd again thanks

Always disconnect your negative cable first, UNLESS you are working on a POSITIVE GROUND system. Then disconnect the positive, first.

1984 - 2000 Ford Escort 1.6 Ghia (it was born in 1982) in the UK I had this often intermittently I had to bump start it on my own. The problem would happen hot or cold. I put an extra set of starter cables in parallel I put a larger crank amp battery in no difference I replaced the starter motor My guess the real problem was a warped crown wheel or something binding the starter gear ??? depending were the rotation of the engine stopped. I got rid of the car AND STARTED PUTTING ON WEIGHT due to having less exercise bump starting the car. TIP dont; try to bump start up hill and try not to bump in reverse.

As I sit here yelling forgot the shroud! LOL

I never had any luck with a diehard they never last out their time limit. i just use my local farm store, and they last full time, but then i am a farmer and you didn't forget the black post cover like i seen a few people do. lol .

A tip to help your battery last longer is keeping the top of the battery clean especially around the terminal posts. It’s surprising how much current will flow across the top between the posts and to ground through the built up dirt and grime slowly discharging the battery even if it’s disconnected. This can be seen using a high impedance voltmeter across the top of the battery. I can only imagine how much worse this effect must be with the salt build up you guys have to deal with in North America and Europe.🇦🇺🦘

why not just clean dirty terminals with wire wool and a brush and then put vaseline on them to stop corrosion??

I just had a newer f150 last week with cel and misfire complaints and he said low washer fluid light comes on. Scan it, no codes. Battery miserably failed load test. Easy fix

Modern cars won't start when during starting the voltage drops below 9 volts, the computer quits working at that level.

I have seen batteries create some strange problems in these newer cars.

Why would anyone use a chain parts store to change batteries. I don’t want some snot nose kid with the total experience of one battery exchange and who was taught by another snot nose who happens to have 2-3 battery exchange experiences. Both times I watched this procedure at AZ the person didn’t even know the proper cable disconnect/reconnect procedure
