"But if she's paying"? It's a great gesture, but it should not come with a disclosure of final approval when it's not her wedding. In my opinion, if someone gifts you something, they should not attach their conditions. My mother in law once offered to buy me clothes, but when she insisted I try on things I KNEW I'd never wear or that were not my taste and told me that if she was paying I would have to get what she liked, I politely thanked her and started to put everything back. At that point, she told me to get what I wanted. Would you ever offer to pay for someone and insist they do things to your taste and wants and needs while holding your gift over their heads? Listen, undoubtedly, I think it's generous of someone to pay for someone's wedding, but that doesn't mean they get a say. If it were me and they told me I had to do everything according to their taste, I'd thank them and pay for it myself, or elope, OR put the wedding off until I could afford to do it MY way. I can't stand these mothers who had their day, they had their choice of this and that, and yet, with their daughters, they effectively try to relive their own weddings or fantasies through their daughters by denying them the very choices and freedom they had back on THEIR day. It's selfish and unnecessary. @@Pelisdiana

She doesn't consider the wedding to be anything but an accomplishment of hers rather than a celebration of her daughter and future son in law's love. An unselfish mother would have had no problem compromising with them so that they all have special people at the wedding.

I totally agree. This is the only say yes to the dress that I have seen where the bride and her mother keep price dropping all the way through and I know everyone has their own style and vision for their special day, but (to be nice) it is not at all what I expected for that kind of money. I expected original elegance, not that.

My brothers’ all paid for their own weddings but my parents had some requests and my brothers were ok with it. However, my parents let my brothers do what they wanted. They would make suggestions but that was it.

For some, a down payment isn't even that much! I think I put 20k down on the first house I bought. Used the sale of that house for the next down payment so it was automatically higher

that's how all expensive things are. you hit a threshold where the only way to increase the cost is to add unnecessary ostentation - more bling, more flash, more bells & whistles & tack. it's like the world's most expensive pizza, covered in truffles and caviar and gold leaf, and tastes like dog shit.

I think in most cases it is the brand name they go for not how nice the dress is.

yeah, there are definitely things I'd do differently if I could do my wedding over but spending more money is NOT one of them. I'm quite happy with our small wedding at the former mayor's "mansion" and not dropping the price of a kidney on my dress.

@@dietotakuI agree and even back then when I imagined my wedding, I never wanted it grand and expensive. My man is very low key and just like me. He likes it small and intimate too. My former friend claimed she had to have a big one due to her and her husband’s family as they are wealthy. But she only spent around $2000 total for all 4 of her dresses. In our culture, we have to wear 3-4 different dresses not only the wedding gown. However, she spent over $50,000 on her wedding.

Looking at the mum overriding all the choices of the couple I'm not surprised he became angry & didn't stay. What a nightmare! If he's now remarried & has several children, maybe he's found someone who doesn't come with such an interfering hindrance. When the groom's is this awful everyone tells the bride to run!

190 guests x $900 a guest = $171,000 just for the reception. not sure if that includes all the renovations they did to the space either. plus $32k for the dress and $7k for the cake, you're looking at $210,000 minimum
