This may be the most photographed watch I have. I've had it for a couple months, but used it in multiple videos. Yet finally, here is the full review. It's the much Loved Khaki King from Hamilton.
It's a 40mm field watch that's perfect for the modern world. Powered by Hamiltons H-40 movement, it's a beautiful-looking piece that fits in almost all situations.
This is also the second version of the Khaki King. The Khaki King II The first was powered by an Eta movement, which has been changed to this H-40. Although really the H-40 is the same Eta movement, just modified. With improvements it's mainspring, and dropping the frequency the power reserve has doubled to 80 hours.

The free sprung balance of the H40 has proven to make mine the most accurate automatic I own, better by far than more expensive watches. I love this piece and enjoy wearing it often. Thank you for such an excellent review.

The champagne dial is THE reason to buy this. That 49mm span is ridiculous. I have 2 but this one is classy with that dial.

Great assessment of the Khaki King. The heritage, appearance, and reliability are what encouraged me the most to finally get a Hamilton. I’ve got the black dial automatic in 42 mm. I quickly replaced the leather strap. It was nice but never fit quite right. Nato and silicone straps appeal to me the most. I get a perfect fit with those. Thanks for sharing the video.

Great review! In June of 2018 I celebrated 45 years of service at my place of employment. The Khaki King was my choice of the gifts offered for that milestone. Mine is the black dial bracelet version, but I like to wear it almost every day with a Clockwork Synergy two-piece nato strap in olive green. I love the watch, and everything about it. Fun fact, I live about 10 miles from Lancaster, Pa., the birthplace of Hamilton watches.

I wish the Champagne and Silver dials had darker hands to match the darker numbers on the dial. Makes for quick recognition visibility in tricky lighting or angle reading situations from dawn to dusk - much like the Hamilton and Waltham railroad pocket watches had at the turn of the last century. There was a reason for that - to minimize the making a time reading mistake. Also, I would like Hamilton to add a screw in crown and 100 meter water resistance.
@Dizzywind

I finally found a method to make the Hamilton leather strap comfortable for me. It is twice as thick near the lugs as it is at the buckle. That upper portion just refuses to flex easily and I think that it what makes it uncomfortable to wear. I applied some Obenaufs LP to both sides of the bands and then took a few minutes to flex it the entire length of the band bending it in both directions. Now the band conforms to my wrist and I almost forget that I am wearing it. It did make the band just a bit darker in color but it still looks great! If you have new Hamilton bands sitting in a drawer because you find them uncomfortable you might give this a try. Adding some waterproofing to a nice leather band is a plus as well.
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 4 года назад
I might have to give this a shot. I'm actually editing together a 3 way comparison with the Khaki King, Alpanist and Orient Star Outdoor. When it comes to straps the Hammy comes in dead last.
@Dizzywind
@Dizzywind 4 года назад
I used this method on two different Hamilton leather bands and it worked for both. A repeatable end result supports the merits of this method.
@Dizzywind
@Dizzywind 4 года назад
If you try this method maybe you could film it. It would provide some new content and I know there are a ton of these Hamilton straps hanging around in people's watch drawers and not being worn.
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 4 года назад
@@Dizzywind Great Idea. I already ordered some to give it a shot, so I guess I might as well film it. Did you just work it in by hand?
@Dizzywind
@Dizzywind 4 года назад
Relative Time Yes a light coating on both sides then work it by hand bending it both ways with special attention paid to the lug ends where the band is thickest. I did this a few times as the flexing opens the pores in the leather allowing more of the leather protector to work its way in. It’s actually pretty amazing just how comfortable these bands can be.

I love my Khaki King and love everything about it...! You know that I never realized the day and date had a gold frame around it until I saw this excellent video of yours....! Learn something everyday.... By the way I have tried many different straps on this watch but the best looking band I have found is the Fluco "Casablanca" in olive...! It picks up that khaki olive tinged face beautifully and the cream stitching on the band makes it look custom, also the edging on the leather is black, just gorgeous and I purchased it at Holben's... Excellent video of one of my favorite watches... I also agree with the fact the watch can be dressed down for field but put a Casablanca band on it and wear it with a sport shirt and a sport coat...! P.S. the watch I have keeps unbelievable accurate time, like it's a chronometer ....!

Dropping the beat rate to 3Hz from 4, and extending the power reserve is a great feat imo. 4Hz is not very fluid, so it's hard to distinguish between a 5/10 in fluidity of the seconds hand and a 4/10 in a normal glance on your wrist. You do notice a power reserve that lasts almost 2 days more.

@@RelativeTime Ufff, difficult question. I think is better the Alpinist; the very well finished case, the screw crown, 20Bar WR, rotatory bezel and 39mm... BUT, in my opinion, the green color is not so versatyle than the black dial of Hamilton. After one year with two watches, I wear more the Hamilton for daily use. I use the Alpinist sometimes, in weekends, in sunny days (then the green dial is expectacular). The Alpinist es more adventure/summer watch and the Hamilton more daily. I think I like better the Hamilton for these reasons, but I'll keep the two!

I love the Seiko Field watches. However, this Hamilton Khaki King is on another level altogether. The Champagne dial is just gorgeous and I must admit I have a soft spot for Champagne and Silver dials. Looks good on most strap types too. I will be now a bit of a bad guy: every watch that we personally like looks good with the straps of our choices....this is irrelevant. What is relevant however is that hamilton now makes their watches in the way that it is impossible to set them any more...if for instance after five year the wach is getting slower you have to send them to the producer or very specialized watch repairing......older models had this simple opportunity, like also seiko or orient now....why did they change it? Money?...

Once again, another great well thought out review! The champagne color looks great, especially with the different finishes, but the hands are easily lost. Plus this needs a 100m (10bar) water resistance.

If they added 100m of WR and a screw-down crown the Khaki King (black and champagne) could be a great one watch solution for most people.

Part of me wants to say that if you need 100m on a field watch your doing it wrong. 😎 But 100m with screw down crown for an everyday watch, regardless of style, is preferred. Then you don't need to worry about taking it off no matter what you do.

That would also make an interesting comparison.

Between the King and the H70505833 Khaki field day date auto i went with the king as well. @ 40mm it's like the Swiss army size of watches it will wear well on an 8 inch wrist just as well as a 7 inch one. And for those looking for a khaki day date display with smaller wrists this is a no brainer as the H70505833 is 42mm to accommodate that layout. Some may nitpick the cut off numbers between 11 and 1 to make room for a full day date display on a 40mm face. But I don't find that it hinders me and the way Hamilton did this was well executed leaving the 24 hour market plainly visible it simply looks smart and is well laid out for the real estate on the watch face. The H40 movement is a perfect balance of accuracy tuned for power reserve, I can walk away from this watch on Friday evening & grab it on a Monday morning and it will still be going strong, and on time.😁

I have a Khaki King Ii (black dial, metal bracelet). The only thing I would add is a screw down crown and another 50M of depth tolerance. But, honestly, as I am retired and only swim and kayak . . . if I get to 50M submerged something is terribly wrong and accurste time is beyond secondary importance.

I've got the Khaki Mechanical and while it's OK (once you regulate it!), my next purchase will be a Khaki King. Go for the King, you won't be disappointed. I have both a Champagne Khaki King and a Tissot Seastar, and really like the 80 hour power reserve in these movements. Yes it makes sense that with both Hamilton and Tissot under the Swatch group that they would share this movement - are they actually identical?? The longer power reserve on both watches more than offsets whatever loss of smoothness in the sweep of the second hand for me, anyway. Do you actually notice this in daily wear? I don't. Thank you for another well thought out review. After much analyzing my best "field watch" is a Dagaz Thunderbolt. Yes, it is considered to be an aviation watch and no longer made; however, it has a better built quality than any Hamilton I have had with a Miyota 9015 (my sample doesn't loose/gain when worn), domed anti-reflective coated sapphire, drilled lugs, amazing bracelet (like Sinn quality), screw down crown, and 150m water resistance. The lume is outstanding. The Dagaz has an extremely legible dial, that is why I consider it my "field watch. If I were looking to upgrade this watch is the logical step; a step which I took. If you don't have one of these watches I recommend you find one used to give it a try. They used to go for ~$300 new, and during the final days ~$188. That is when I purchased mine. Hamilton is a company rich with horological history; especially in the last century. The one common complaint I hear about is water intrusion. I never got mine wet, so have never had one fail. I hope they have corrected these issues in the latest runs. I actually prefer my Seiko SNK to the Hamilton Khaki King for outdoor activities. All this said, it is nice to hear a positive review about the current Hamilton Khaki King. Excellent job as always!

@@RelativeTime They were not a well-known watch (and I was told that manufacturing costs were an issue), so the company decided to stop manufacturing them and focus on adding more dive watches. The only people that bought them were watch enthusiasts looking for something different. I think it is very unfortunate they stopped production, as this watch is an awesome non-dive watch. I was informed they would not be making anymore in the future. A big bummer IMHO. They turn up on eBay and on the forums for sale. If you can find one in good condition (and someone willing to part with it) I highly recommend it. I love diver's watches (and dive style watches), but not everyone always wants to wear a large chunk of steel (or titanium) on the wrist. Field watches (and this Dagaz) definitely have their place. I speculate Dagaz is going with the market, like most micro-brands, and focusing on dive style watches.

I like field watches myself and have several, from a Hamilton 1978 mil-issue to a modern Hamilton Khaki Mechanical to the usual Seiko Sports 5 suspects, even a Marathon GP Stainless mechanical. You should check out Manchester Watch Works (MWW) Rattler field watch. 100m, screw-down crown, NH35A, titanium case, insane lume that lasts through the night. It's my go-to beater watch I wear for work.

you're nailing the macro shots! Beautiful cinematography. Also a great honest review! also, in terms of "upgrading" a field watch, well... the whole point is they are cheap and cheerful, meant to be rough and tough but if they get blown to bits, cheap to replace. An expensive field watch is... pointless?

That is an excellent point. I love the Glycine airman I got as a travel watch. It's perfect for adventurous trips, except for one thing. It's price. If I trip and smack it against a rock I wont be happy. In some ways that's why I still have my Vostok Ampbibia.

I have this watch and really think it is a great piece. It has been my go to watch whenever I am doing something active (hiking, working on my car, etc.). Unfortunately I think I am going to sell mine at some point as the 49.5mm lug to lug is just a bit too much for my taste. It is otherwise a fantastic watch though, especially how thin it wears

Relative Time I haven’t decided what I will replace it with yet. I want something in the 36-38mm range. The Khaki field is in consideration, but I think I might look for something a little different than my khaki king for variety. I recently tried on a Oris Pointer Date 36, but the 17mm lugs were a turn off. I might look at Sinn. Otherwise I don’t know yet. I have already bought too many watches this year and want to go without a new purchase until the new year so I have time to think it over

The Swatch Group is doing the same thing with the power reserve in some of there other brands. The Powermatic 80 is basically the same movement with Date only. I got a Certina DS Action Diver and that is what it had. If your really into field watches I don’t know what a good option slightly more expensive this is. For a similar price there is the Glycine Combat 6 Vintage. It’s similar to this but 43mm and date only, no day. 50m wTer resist with a similar dial and a modified 2824-2. I got one for under $400 from Jomashop.

How has that movement been in the Certina? I've looked at the Glycine Combat as well. Almost bought one of the moonphase versions when it was on Massdrop, but I held out for the Airman. Could be a good option, although I was already thinking about a combat sub as well.

Relative Time last time I wore the Certina, It running a few seconds fast. I have heard mixed results on the Powermatic 80 and the Hamilton versions. I heard it’s not as reliable as a standard 2824 or similar ETA movement. Glycines can usually be had for some great prices. I have seen Combat Subs for under $500. They are really nice. Very thin and more unique then a Steinhart Ocean One.

A really nice watch with this very nice champaigne dial which really enhances it in my opinion and which I prefer to the black dial. I like the fact it also has an 80 hour power reserve. I personally own one watch with a champaigne dial and that is on a quartz Pulsar watch. Becaus of the colour of the dial I have found it very versatile also as regards straps. I changed the strap it was originally one to a nice red strap similar to the grey strap you have shown in your video with your Hamilton and it looks amazing. I only have two field watches, one being a Citizen Eco Drive and the other a Seiko Solar watch, both are great watches and very affordable and have 100M water resistance which is a must for a field watch IMO. The Seiko I have put on an aviator strap because as I wear it a lot on activities with the air cadets (Air Training Corps) here in the UK I needed a strong watch strap which will also take a lot of punishment and it is ideal. Thanks for posting this video, I may go for one of these in the future but I wouldn't wear it for my activities with the air cadets due to it only being 50M water resistant.

Where can you buy this watch for ~$350? Retail price is $545. Amazon has it for $379 but I would never buy a watch from amazon due to all the fakes. Someone else commented that they saw the same in other reviews. Not entirely sure whats going on. Straight on they are black. But with bright studio light, very reflective dial and more extreme angles they start to look more charcoal to dark blue. Might be the dome crystal is diffracting the light a little, or just the material the numerals are made of. I never noticed in while wearing it. Just when reviewing the footage.

I see enough complaints with the water resistance on Hamilton’s that 50-100m gives me worry. People washing their hands have gotten condensation in their watches. I’m sure this happens with other brands but it seems to be a more common theme with Hamilton. I dislike the 11,12,and 1 being covered on these.

50 meters is ~150 feet. A 15-story building is about 150 feet. The biggest building in my town is like 6 stories, and that's our county jail. Unless a person is an avid underwater diver or even an amateur diver, with an average depth of 30 feet, it means nothing. An Every Day Wear watch with 50m is like 500m, b/c it's not going to get wet outside of washing your hands. So my question is why? Why do you want, need or wish this watch could be submerged at a depth of over 100m/300 feet into a body of water? Are/would you even take a beautiful $500+ "field watch" into the ocean? It's a dress/light duty work watch, not a dive watch.

@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 5 лет назад
I've looked into that a little before hand. It's really hard to say. Most of the negatives seem to tie it to the Powermatic 80 movements. Which replaced a few parts with plastic. Yet I've saw some who mention that they are related and not the same. Which is why they don't have the same jewel count. Although most who have the new H movements say their very accurate. A lot of it is speculation, I wish I could find a real watch maker who has taken one apart.
@rafaelmorales5579

@@RelativeTime I have heard from several watchmakers that these movements with 80 hours of power reserve are fragile and not very durable, due to their smaller and plastic parts.
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 5 лет назад
@@rafaelmorales5579 The could be. I honestly don't know. The problem I ran into trying to do some research was a general confusion of people mixing up the different 80 hr movements from Eta. Supposedly the H movement is similar to the Powermatics but different. The powermatic had some plastic components, which might be metal again in the H seriers. Some think this is so due to the different jewel counts. There is also the plastic sistem 51 in swatches which is totally different. Yet they now have a similar Tissot Swissmatic. From what I've seen more metal components but similar design. So when I was looking on the forums for some information. I usually found someone asking about one of those, and a person would respond back linking something that was talking about another one. Which just lead to general confusion all around.

No they numerals are black. With the studio light, and certain angles they start to look a little charcoal to dark blue. But straight on they are black. Not sure if it's the numerals themselves, or if the light bouncing around inside the dome crystal is doing something. O and one advantage that the black has is that the numerals have lume. But from other reviews, it's not very good and doesn't last as long as the pips or hands. So I don't think you are missing much.
