Is it possible to memorize the Bible while meditating on it at the same time? Or can you meditate on the Bible, as it says in Psalm 1:2, without actually memorizing it? These aren't simple questions and it's worth spending a few minutes thinking about what this means for you.

I wholeheartedly agree Josh. For me though, I see meditation as a deeper level of getting into God's Word. Reading, studying, and memorizing, as important as they are, are means of equipping me to meditate. Thanks for what you do!

The way I memorize organically causes me to contemplate on it. If I’m having trouble memorizing a portion of scripture, I tend to analyze it and understand it more to help me remember it.

That's great, Estelle. I think that studying what you're memorizing is a great way to help it "stick".

Amen I totally agree. I memorized a lot of psalms but even reciting what I have memorized I still dont really meditate. I have to stop and take one verse and go over and over on it, personalizing it, turning it into prayer etc. I am going even say “reciting” is not meditation - so I am going a bit farther than even what you are saying….

Very interesting, Scott. Thanks for sharing! Perhaps it would be better to say that when you're moving the memory from short-term to long-term, it's still work, but hopefully at some point the recitation can become part of meditation.

I think that memorising helps till to the point where doesn't interfere with your daily study or meditation or putting in practice so More important I think is to put in practice
@BibleMemoryGoal

Definitely true. But the same thing could be said for "daily devotional time" or even just going to church. Nothing that we do which could be considered "spiritual" is worth anything if we don't actually apply it. But just because that's true doesn't mean we shouldn't spend time in the Word, go to church or memorize.

I agree, for the most part. Once I have put in the work to memorize, then it’s easier to meditate. I will say, though, that there are times when I’m in the active part of memorizing that some part of a verse will hit me in a new way and even bring me to tears. And part of meditating is “chewing on” or mulling over a passage. When I’m repeating/singing it over and over, pondering what the words mean, that’s a form of meditation, right? I remember when a former student mentioned that a Scripture song I had taught her was stuck in her head, and I replied, “That’s a good thing! You’re meditating on Scripture!” (I guess maybe she wasn’t really meditating on it, but the repetitive nature sometimes brings fresh insights from the Holy Spirit).

That makes sense. When you talk about meditation, are you referring to the time when you're reviewing or when you're actively memorizing?

I've recently started trying to memorize Scripture, and it's not easy. Meditation is more profound than only memorizing words.
@BibleMemoryGoal
@BibleMemoryGoal 2 года назад
The point here is that memorization is hard work - as you have clearly experienced! The reward of meditation comes after you've memorized, and when you have Scripture with you at all times and the ability to recite it anywhere, THAT is where profound "ah-ha!" moments happen.

For me, as I said in the video, I meditate when I recite. Perhaps you can try reciting slowly as a form of meditation? Recite each sentence and repeat it a couple time.

Understanding the bible is way better than memorizing. Once you read and understand youll have those teaching inside of you. I feel most ppl who constantly quote the bible are doing it to push their viewpoint or use it to win an argument because if they can make scripture fit their narrative then they must be right because God said so. I had to step away from a lot of Christian video pages because I was getting so many differing views and I needed to return to my own understanding and putting it into practice.

Thanks for the input here, Charles. I try to shy away from "____ is way better than ____" statements because they don't take into account how different people learn and process information. For me, memorization is part of the understanding process, and part of why I encourage extended Scripture memory (memorizing whole chapters and books) is so that we can understand context. I think that a lot of what you're referring to is maybe people who pull a verse out of context in order to promote a certain viewpoint. While that does happen, the idea that all memorization is bad because some people use it incorrectly is throwing the baby out with the bath water. My only encouragement to you is that you should be careful with the "return to my own understanding" idea (Proverbs 3:5). This can easily lead to doctrines and viewpoints that fit your own narrative (sound familiar?).

Jesus replied with the word of God back to the enemy in the wilderness. See even Jesus memorized the Word of God. I personally find it quite difficult to stand firm in the understanding of word of God. If I forget to recollect the whole sentence of verse. I have to memorize it. Memorizing, meditating, understanding, studying the word of God is very important! And Reviewing too. It's always good to go over what you already know!

It is as different as worshiping God and memorizing the lyrics of the song. Also memorizing the song to understanding the lyrics.
@BibleMemoryGoal

A question. Psalms are poems. So the Psalm 1 v1 and v2 actually tells us " rather than doing that do this." That is, don't walk, stand and sit with wicked but rather meditate on the word of God day and night. Still, as it is a poem/song? Would not day and night mean ...like constant? ...Not really like literal DAY AND NIGHT? Per day consist of a day and a night. Hmm.. leave everything and just focus on meditating on the word of God many times in a day. Logically, we live in busy world with school, office, home, family. And in that we add spiritual life. Praying, reading the word of God. Worshipping Jesus. We can't do everything everytime. So it's a Metaphor?
@BibleMemoryGoal
@BibleMemoryGoal 2 года назад
Sure, it's not possibly to *literally* meditate day and night on God's words. However, we can make it a continual part of our life, and in my life, memorizing and reviewing Scripture is an excellent way to do that.

Davis technique does not lend itself to meditation. For me, I find that the memory technique I learned from Ron Whie does. I feel like I am meditating while memorizing, because I am quite literally fixating on what I memorzing as I am storing it in my mind. It's like I'm picking up the verse and looking at it hard and pondering it's significance. I have to say I disagree. Also, the word "impossible" should be removed from any Christian's vocabulary, because you are contradicting the Bible you are trying to memorize. Phil. 4:13
