It's NOT a Strat! It's a Music Man CUTLASS

It would be sooo easy to call the Cutlass just another Strat, but it wouldn't do it justice. This guitar has all the amazing features of a Music Man and it feels more like a Music Man than a Strat!

I absolutely love my Cutlass. It has all of the modern features I look for in a guitar while paying homage to amazing vintage instruments. The first time I played it made me feel like I had it for years. The neck feels amazing with its the contours while still being substantial which offers perfect ergonomics for chords and soloing, at least for my small hands. My only minor gripes with the guitar are that the silent circuit requires a battery and that the humbucker occasionally sounds unbalanced and bright compared to the single coils. However, I haven't needed to change the battery yet, even after about half a year of owning the guitar and gigging on weekends regularly, and depending on your settings you can make the humbucker SING. The trem system is smooth and the metal covering the saddles makes it very comfortable to rest your hand on. I spend most of my time on the 4th and neck positions for what I play, but all of the pickup positions are great. The locking tuners are an amazing addition and they hold standard tune for me very well so far. I bought mine used in mint condition for a decent price and I have no regrets. Like any other gear similar to the Cutlass, I totally recommend one if you can get your hands on a nice one for a nice price. I played a few used Cutlasses at a guitar store this summer which were "duds" compared to mine, but that may've been a set up difference or old strings, etc. I'm interested to see how it compares with other modern guitars, but I will say it again, I LOVE my Cutlass. Music Man knocked it out of the park with this one, in my opinion.

I've got a 'regular' maple neck HSS cutlass (non roasted). The tone and action are great. However I find the feeling (the pick response) very 'brittle'. Is it sort of a feature of the cutlass to feel so hard?

As far as I know it does NOT have active pickups or an active boost circuit like the Majesty. The battery is only there to do the magic silent circuit which somehow eliminates the singlecoil hum...

yeah.... but what do you know... I mean... you're right... but still...
@DrKevGuitar

Yes, the pickups are passive but the battery powers the silent circuit AND a buffer circuit. The buffer means no treble loss when you roll dow the volume and no treble loss using long cables. Incidentally they did a cool thing where the humbucker sees 500 kΩ volume and tone but the single coils see 250kΩ. It's a fantastic sounding guitar!
@wipperwil
@wipperwil 4 года назад
True. Not active at all. Remove the battery and all sounds are the same and the same volume, just powers the “great negator of horrid hums” - that’s the technical term.

I have 2 EBMM, I love them. To me they are better than my Fender American Strat and PRS Standard 24. I agree that they are spendy, but watch the video were Rob Chapman visits the EBMM factory and comments on how the factory is different than others he has toured. He commented that the employees are genuinely happy there. Sterling Ball (Owner) is proud that he pays his employees LIVING wages. They are not a greedy company, they are a family company that actually creates a great work environment and pays their employees good wages. Top quality guitars and high wages = more expensive guitars. For me it is worth saving up an extra 6 months to buy from a company like Music Man.

I don't usually brag... but I was lucky to get a used one. For less than us 1000. Man best guitar ever. It came modified with Schecter monster tone pick ups. And I came with the originals if I want to switch them back. Oh man this guitar feels better than all strats I've played. And it doesn't look bad either.

GREAT Review! Sold! I feel I'm now willing to sell one of my best Fenders (each of which cost me WELL over $1000 US, and still in almost new condition) to fund the purchase of one of these USED, and well worn in. I played one recently at a Guitar Center and I was just blown away! The tones, the feel, the premium build (especially that neck!) -- nothing about this guitar would ever give me even the slightest hint of "buyer's remorse". In fact, I can't see that I would ever need any other electric guitar (for MY purposes) after I've had my hands on one of these beauties (knock on wood! LOL). This Cutlass is a real Swiss army knife / work horse of a guitar with a straight-line heritage (through Leo) to the best years of Fender. Much like a Strat, sure, but BETTER! Ernie Ball has done a superb job of making real improvements and innovations over the many years since it took over the reins of Music Man, and given many great instruments and related gear to serious musicians of the world. Keep on rockin' y'all!

Great demo. Lovely to play, but I swapped mine for a 2016 Stingray (before the pretty roasted necks came along). Amazing to play, but the ceramic bridge pick up doesn't suit the pop/country our band plays, and the pretty flamed maple neck makes the black fret dots disappear on a dark stage. A rosewood fretboard solves the dark stage problem, but messes with the pure maple neck tone for me

@@EytschPi42 It doesn't change the message because the video is actually a review. But other channels doesn't present the product as such. For exemple: "can you play these solos on that bass?", "Most iconic riffs played on this or that instrument" (of course Music Man). Or "I present you MY new gear" without saying that they got paid to promote THE new gear not THEIR new gear. It kinda grinds my gear... when the brand or the youtuber think that the viewer is THAT naive. Of course you have to get paid for a job! But in a honest way like YOU do. I really think that a brand (Music Man) damages its own image when they flood RU-vid with DISGUISED advertising.

Nobody is forcing you to buy anything. The only problem with that is if they are telling you it’s a certain product when it not. That’s deception. But if the sound you’re hearing or the visual you are seeing is legit, then who cares if it’s their personal rig or not. It’s a well known fact that artists can be endorsed by a certain company but don’t actually use that gear every time they play. Welcome to the world of marketing. This is the real world. People need to use their brains and wise up.

Prices for these are ridiculous in Canada as well. I had a JP red mist with piezo. The price has gone up $100 per year since. That's not inflation or cost of doing business, that's price gouging. Also it's wood. Wood is not that expensive and neither is sandpaper. I'm sure they've made their money back on the CNC machines that do all the hard work. Sorry but there's no way to justify the prices for a piece wood and some simple electronics. Addendum: just looked up my old receipt and the JP I had has gone up $119.33/year. That's insane.
