John, I found an article which was talking about the sourcing of horses for the British Army in Ireland and found this reference to the King's Troop horses which may help with the "sizing" of their horses. "While the Household Cavalry select only black horses (greys for the trumpeters and band), the horses of the King’s Troop are selected to be a certain type and range of colours. The six guns, each weighing 1.5t, are drawn by teams of six horses, each team called a sub-division, and range from light bays in A Sub-division, to blacks in F Sub-division. The front horses are called leads and are the largest of the team at around 16hh, the centre horses are around 15.3hh and the wheelers at the back are shorter and stockier at 15.2hh. As with horses of the Household Cavalry, once the initial training is done, the horses (known at this stage as remounts) of the Royal Artillery then move to London to complete their training with the specialist equipment". The King's Troop is based at Royal Artillery Barracks Woolwich.

Yes your right we are all paying for it or at least those of us who pay taxes are and it is worth every penny and always have done, but think how much it would cost if we had an President instead, darn sight more.🧐

If a donation made upon entering might work better than an actual payment fee. For many tourists, costs of visits add up especially if you have a family.

Also, I've learned to wake up early in any city to get videos and photographs. My favorites are from a very very winter morning in Paris. No one out, no lines for the first tours of Notre Dame.

Yes, we did exactly the same thing when we were making our overseas trips - out as early as possible in the morning, watching cities "come awake", and often getting very different videos/photos of highly photographed, well-known tourist sites. Being able to get into places such as cathedrals, art galleries/museums, palaces before the hordes descended also made experiences far more enjoyable. Monet's water garden at Giverney first thing in the morning, before the tourists coaches arrived, was breathtaking.

I heard what you said to your friend, John and I agree with your observations. Especially in regard to people latching on to the success that they have seen others (i.e. you and Buska) have here. The difference between them and you is they are doing it out of greed and to video drama. You , on the other hand, are there out of interest in the subject matter (the horses and the tradition of the military) and to inform. Thank you for that. Your dialogue is always fun and interesting.

I am a US civilian who has worked for Dept of Defence contractors for a yr with Army and 3 yrs with the Air Force they fortunately have the same rank system. This US Navy is totally different but I think similar to British navy, I worked in a company with 100 computer engineers and I was the only female. Some of the company guys were perfect idiots and jerks, but every service person was always polite and helpful, so I thought it was the least I could do was to address them properly by their correct rank. One night when my shift ended at 11 pm and I just left the base and was a 1/3 mile down the road. I had a flat tire. For my job I had to wear a suit and nice clothes that you had to send to the cleaners. Just as I put my flashers out and was getting spare tire out of the boot a young Spec 4 came running down the road with rifle and yelling stop. I thought as it was my first week at that Air Base I had done something incorrectly. He said please let me change that tire for you, may I put my rifle on the back seat with the door open. There were 4 guards on duty at the main gate and since he was in sight with his rifle apparently is was ok. I said thank you and we chatted about our home towns while he worked and I slipped in and asked if he would be on duty the next night, Since he had previously checked my ID and saw I had a high security clearance and a high level parking pass he answered yes and explained their shift system which was interesting, I had only asked so I could bake a box of cookies for him and his mates the next night.. Another night I had to fix something at a remote station in a bad part of town. and some local guys on the corner started harassing me, a carload of off duty airmen recognized me and stopped and offered to watch my car, my pass was not valid at this station so I had to park on the street. It only took 10 minutes to change a fuse and run a test program but I was very glad I had always been nice to everyone no matter their rank. Also nice that my whole car was still there. It really does pay to be nice to others.

I agree with you John. People should have to pay to go into the yard and definitely issue only a few license to film. I think it would definitely curtail most of the problem people.

You recently asked what a horse costs, 5,000 fun for children, to 10,000 euros for a trained horse, without maintenance costs. Then the large one, which I suspect, includes a Frisian horse, because of the blackness and the large size, well that can cost up to 15,000 euros, a thoroughbred can cost up to 50,000 euros. It also costs a lot of money every month to maintain them, plus the vet bill, it is an expensive hobby!!

That is why you can also have the purple poppies for remembrance of the animals killed during the wars - not just the horses but also the donkey, mules, camels, dogs, etc. The Australian Light Horse Brigades of the first world war were devastated to have to kill their mounts at the end of the war because of Australia's quarantine laws. The only horse that returned to Australia was "Sandy", the horse belonging to Major General William Bridges, Commander of the Australian 1st Division who died of his wounds received at Gallipoli. 136,000 horses were sent from Australia and only "Sandy" came home.

We are so so proud of all of our military. They are so brave and so loyal. We could learn a lot from them.

goodwill visits often take place between visiting navys. including our own british Royal Navy. On those occasions, the Royal navy at least will be told what to wear ashore. If its an OFFICIAL VISIT its usually best uniform. Also remember, in whitehall is the Ministry of defence.. they might be liaising with them for some reason or on a fact finding your of our other forces, not just the Royal Navy. Perhaps they are visiting parliament or, if naval doctors or medics, they could have visited St. Thomas' hospital. A host of reasons why they are here.

Great idea John, apart from the money being used to help with upkeep for the buildings and for the Museum, might stop those grifters who sell pictures for their own pockets. They could issue you guys with passes so you would be visible as legal, would also limit the numbers. See what the other regulars think and maybe broach the idea to HCav.

Hi The RHA (Royal Horse Artillery) are based at Woolwich, where the Royal Artillery were originally. They used to be based at St John's Wood.

There is an event called Fleet Week John when Navy boats from around the world visit different ports. My daughter was visiting New Orleans with a friend about 10+ years ago when it was on. She said it was amazing and New Orleans was in full party mode 😂.

A license is a great idea to reduce the numbers to film and if it makes it easier for you and your friends. Also a great idea to start charging for entrance to the Horse Guards, the money raised could go to a trooper and horse fund. Lovely surprise for her that her family turned up

Good afternoon John the idea you are suggesting would be brilliant. If tourist touch the reins and disrespect all guards on duty should be fined on the spot of £20 and above. Be made to pay there and then. Put a few more police out side the gates and give them there fine
