Notice in _Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse_ every Spider's intro is "I'm the one and only Spider-Man."? The majority of comic readers say Peter and Miles shouldn't be Spider-Man from the same universe at the same time. Doing so diminishes the name and their roles.
Yeah, his powers made me wonder why he's even a Spider character in the first place. It's creatively lazy, even without the obvious motivations behind it.
What would be cool is seeing Miles become his own thing nit just a new spider hero. Like he could legit take up his uncles alias as Prowler and start ripping bad guys a new one.
Parker is Spider-Man, Bruce is Batman, Clark is Superman, and Wolverine goes by Logan because he doesn't know his own real name. That's right, I said it!!!!!
It's silly that Miles is called Spider-Man. During the new videogame, it was so cringey hearing them call each other Spider-Man during certain scenes. It's just another example of some people not being able to come up with lasting characters without riding the coattails of others.
Its less that and more than launching a new character can be expensive (especially if fails) and the major companies don't take risks anymore. They would rather slap a familiar name on it to sell it. It's kind of the same reason Hollywood loves remakes and sequels. Less risky, or they used to be.
@@LibraGamesUnlimitedWhat makes that really sad to me is I bet I'm not the only one who'd love seeing brand new characters with interesting abilities and good back stories but they're stuck in the classics. We don't need 2 Thors, you have a multiverse where new characters could've been born & created. The fact that the classics are all they rewrite and recreate is disappointing.
Another example of race cringe in the comic / comic movie industry cringe was when Jaimie Foxx Electro blatantly tells Andrew Garfield Spider-Man that he was disappointed because he wasn't black in Spider-Man No Way Home and having Andrew Garfield Spider-Man apologize for it. Another forced scene that was 100% not needed in the story. Just proves the ongoing effort to replace established characters and make them black because apparently white and re-head characters are a problem.

I wish they'd give Miles his own identity instead of having him wear Spider-Man like a skinsuit. Miles could and should stand on his own as a character. However, the alphabet goblins whispering in Marvel's ear won't be happy into Peter Parker is abandoned at the curb.

@@thanatosdriver1938 Not really. Think of it like a crush: you can see that girl being sweet to her friends and she's really pretty, so you adore the idea of her. But if you meet her and get to know her, and find that she's empty-headed and kind of mean-spirited to those outside of her friend group, you may no longer crush on her. You liked the idea of her, not the girl herself. Too many people simply want Black Spider-Man but don't actually identify with Miles or follow his stories. They just like the idea that this character is black and would rather steal an established character than create something real. Because they don't want a black superhero: they want Spider-Man black simply so they can have the endorphin rush and racist clout of saying that this famous character is black now.
@@WhiteManOnCampus couldn't have said it better myself. Huh. I wonder if that is why in Tom Holland's Spider-Man they never mention Uncle Ben and only hint at his initials. And the costumes are all different too.
I think he didn't have an Uncle Ben to begin with. He doesn't have the middle name nor does he really have the rendition of great power until May dies. I say Toms Spider-Man was inspired by the heroes around him when he was growing up and just clicked that he should do what they are doing. The trilogy is his origin story essentially. Making miles the new spider man is like when you buy the Great Value version of a product instead of the big brand version because you’re on a tight budget.
And the supermarket relabels the Great Value can with the label of the premium brand, and then tries to tell you that you're getting a bargain on the stuff.
In the Ultimate universe, Miles was the second Spider-Man after Ultimate Peter Parker died. He did his own thing, not trying to be Peter Parker's Spider-Man. So when he got transferred to the 616 he kept the name.
Unfortunately, I'm guessing Marvel is going to make Peter a more or less a supporting character in the MCU. The problem with Peter is he's not ethnic enough and Marvel will never risk offending the hundreds of Miles fans out there. Insomniac games made Peter pretty much a supporting character in their last game, and they've admitted that for them, Miles is the new Spiderman. Marvel has committed to Miles and the only reason they won't dump Peter entirely is because they just paid a handsome sum to keep him.
It's the end of future Spider-Man games for me. Always missed the love and corny comic feel that went into the OG Ps1 games. Shame, if the same love went into the last two Spider-Man games we would all be playing them right now.
I passed on the new SM game based on it's woke nonsense. I hated that they shoehorned MM into the first game (aren't they different universes?) but they did. Then he got HIS OWN game (Peter NEVER got his own game) then they made him the star of SM2 along with all the other woke nonsense. Passing on any future SM games. There's plenty of games out there for me to play. I won't even play it when it hits PLUS.
You have to wonder, though, how much they family is actually going to realize after the lawyers take expenses off the top and then their 1/3 cut of the net proceeds. If they end up keeping close to half of the settlement, I'd be surprised.
That might be a tough sell to a court or a jury. By the time the Hulk made his way into the world, there had already been a large number of stories and movies about giant creatures mutated by radiation (think 1950s cheesy sci-fi).
He's a Spider-Man. Only you people get all bent out of shape over Miles, everyone else who aren't all bent out of shape over petty shit love him as a character and story. You are of course entitled you own opinion, but it weak to see all you lames dissing Miles for what I have always suspected is some insecurity you have with people who look like Miles.
@@gogereaver349 I don't think anyone said there was anything wrong with the character they were just taking exception with Marvel trying to replace the main Spiderman with him for purely real-world economic reasons and trading on the modern notions of diversity and inclusion.
The only way Miles could have worked as Spider-Man was to leave him in the Ultimate Universe, but Marvel ruined any tiny bit of promise that endeavor had. They couldn't let Miles become a rarely seen AU Spider-Man, even if in time he might have become a character with a dedicated fanbase like Spider-Man 2099.
"wHy wOn'T MaRveL LeT PeTeR Be HaPpY" - you'd always see smooth brains say this on reddit, and it's clearly an astroturf sentiment Disney seeded in order to create the appearance of demand for Peter Parker to retire. Comics aren't movies. There is no cast that ages out. Nobody gets old unless you want them to. There is no irreplaceable fan favorite actor. Disney buying Marvel is probably the worst thing to ever happen to comics, because it totally bastardized the medium, deformed the cultural understanding of it, and salted the Earth for anything / anyone outside of their control. It established a corporate pop hegemony in a way that one-offs and very of-the-time, fast and loose franchises never did.
U.S. copyright law is a load of bullshit dumped upon the land by Disney lawyers who'll give up Mickey Mouse when he's pried from their cold, dead fingers. Simularly, I don't think there's anyone who's entitled to get rich just because a relative had a hit with one, two, or even ten works of art. Creative works eventually have to go into the public domain because EVERYONE is inspired to create from someone else's creation. Can you imagine how few books or movies would have ever been made if the estate of William Shakespeare could still claim copyright infringement? We even have a modern example with the estate of Marvin Gaye's "Blured Lines" lawsuit against Robin Thicke. A great copyright reform would be limiting it to the life of the creator, period. S/he could sell, rent, or otherwise assign their creation to someone else, or even operate under a work-for-hire contract. But when that creator goes tits-up, all of his/her creations go free to be used by anyone that wants to. There's good and bad with that, of course. For every "Greystoke: The Legend Of Tarzan," you can also get "Tarzan The Ape Man" starring Bo Derek! But it's better for humanity as a whole, the true inheritors of great works of art, to allow these creations to inspire the NEXT great work of art without having ravenous relatives OR corporations breathing down anyone's neck!
They don't have Disney pushing to extend copywrite laws anymore, Disney's gonna let The Mouse go public, cause the IP isn't worth it to them anymore. But that will have a trickle down effect on all the other IP's.
The rate at which Disney is committing financial seppuku, as well as their mounting legal problems, probably means that they know their days are numbered and they're busy rigging golden parachutes for the higher ups and contemplating Chapter 7. They have more pressing things to worry about than who owns Mickey Mouse (like, for example, staying out of federal prison).
Thank you Ethan. It's great to get my comic news from you. Glad to see the Ditko family get a resolution here. I hope it was a good one. On another note - I just don't see activist Marvel making any improvements over this.
As a fellow creator, every time I think about Steve Ditko, I get sad. The man was a genius creator who died broke all because of a selfish Stan Lee and a greedy corporation. Stan did a lot for the comic industry but he had the power to help his fellow creators (Jack, Steve) and he turned his back on them while lying to the public whenever he smiled
And we've had to watch Steve Ditko's creative legacy be problematized by culture warriors who were injected into the nerd pop culture sphere by the Disney-fied Hollywood gold rush to turn comic books into their own personal supply of toilet paper.
@@iamwhoyousayiam6773 I’m not going to say he was a complete jerk. I’ve read a lot about him over the years because I wanted to learn about why people loved comics so much and he did have two personalities. One he’d had for the cameras and one behind closed doors. I pitched ideas for what they could have called Miles Morales... Names like "Black-Web" which given his powers of blending in with shadows fits like unofficial military operations that go unreported called "Black operations". "Ebon-Spider" to reference his mainly black suit. Stuff like that. Marvel needs to get into some more clever naming... I'm working on some stuff of my own, but lately, a game I've been working on solo has been in development HELL...
This makes perfect sense. I never understood this whole spider family / bat family thing but with little focus on the main version. I actually like Miles but your spot on in that he is like the Chrysler K body that underpins anything they'd like to do in the future. It's a slap in the face. If there were only Miles and MAYBE Spider-Gwen, I'd be ok, but there's entirely too many diluting the room. Lastly regarding diversity: (apologies in advance for the long read) I hate that i have to call this out, but I'm a 51yr old black man. Been reading comics since I could read thanks to my father. My all-time favorite characters have been Spidey and Hulk because people connect with stories and characters in film and print intellectually and emotionally, not on basis of how the character looks. Never been an issue for me. I've always appreciated their struggles with balance. So speaking for myself, I've never hated diverse characters, what I do hate is poorly written, developed or executed characters or stories or re-badging. Don't tell me Falcon is somehow now Captain America, HE IS THE FALCON! Why can't we see a story of Sam Wilson working and sometimes struggle to fill the void that his friend and partner left instead of him 'cosplaying' as Captain America? That to me would be more compelling. I could go on. My point is i don't want all the characters I grew up with swapped and replaced by generic 'Great Value' versions. If you want me to be interested in a diverse character, create a NEW hero and write them well and let me grow with them. Blue Marvel is a good example.
It all depends. The woke are all about tearing down anything that came before and Disney/Marvel is quite willing to do things to their own detriment. Just look at everything Disney has done on purpose to their own franchises.

It's awkward like this for Ciem as well. The basic label only sticks when applied to Candi. When confusion sets in, Tanya has to go by "Ciem of Seattle" (or later, San Antonio), to fix everything. It's like having two bottles of Captain Morgan, and having to specify that one is regular and the other is Tattoo Spice. Prefer whichever one you want, but branding is still an issue. Dana gets dubbed "Ciem of Tomorrow" in editing, to distinguish her from her mother. Angie only gets a pass in Percolation lore for being Candi's first child, and for the fact that she's not far enough in the future to have Dana's title. But she's an Elseworld character, who doesn't live long enough in the main canon to ever become Ciem. Karla Wimberton tried to cosplay as Candi, and learned quickly that was a mistake. Tabitha Pang made Candi her childhood idol, and faced a ton of flack for it. This was one of many reasons why, when given the chance to copy anyone's abilities, Tabby ultimately chose to copy Mapacha del Fuego, rather than become another Ciem. Michelle tries to fill in as Ciem, but becomes Feruga in the end instead, much like how Ben Reilly became Scarlet Spider. Then there's Charlotte. She never even bothers with the Ciem mantle. She simply goes by Mukade, since she's Japanese. And in spite having centipede DNA, Plum Bixie and Sniperbadger adopt entirely different animal symbols, and become other types of heroes entirely. As for Chris Kennal accepting the title of Purge-Flare? That's because he knows that in spite his best efforts to fool everyone he targets into thinking he's Extirpon, he's ultimately unworthy to fill Eric's shoes. When Jordan Reddlewick realizes that he and Donte can't both be Emeraldon, and that Jordan's energy signature is blue, he adopts the moniker of Sapphire King instead. The only way Miles can logically be Spider-Man is for Peter to stay dead. That's why the Spiderverse movies wisely chose to have Chris Pine's Spidey die so early. Insomniac meanwhile tries to be like main Marvel, having their cake and eating it too. And it gets sillier the harder they try.
i bet that in animation they'll do the same. that's the purpose of Into the Spiderverse with the heavy focus on Miles. to push him and remove Peter. live action movies and comics will follow.
Does this explain the motivation behind the creation of the entire Spiderverse? Like, let's just throw as many versions and variations of Spider-Man against a wall and see which ones stick? (Pun intended)
This is a perfect solution: let all the creators (or their estate) have their creations back and they can either put them out themselves or lease them out to people who will treat them right and Marvel/DC can have their silly knockoff.
While I agree with what you're saying, that will decision will still have consequences. The main one being, there will be far less artistic works for audiences because creators will be more stingy and protective of their works. It would be good in the case of things like Marvel and DC, but in general customers would lose because no one wants to share their work. The end result would be artists will remain poor because no one invests in them and companies retain power because they're safe avenues for investment. So everything ends back where it started, though it will be a slow and painful process. The only proven method has been through crowdfunded Comics Gate, which varies wildly from creator to creator and results with you getting immediately blacklisted from the industry, or someone comes after you in some kind of lawsuit losing you any profits you achieve.
@@grayfox6518 I don't see that happening at all. If you created and owned this character that people love and you are able to write them well and you know it wound sell why wouldn't you? For that matter if you created a character and move them (as these old school creators seem to) and you have seen the last few years the big companies who have them degrade and destroy them, why wouldn't you lease it out to someone good and fix that? The only thing I would worry about would be descendants who don't care about the characters just the money holding out to the highest bidder and not care what the winner does with it unless it hurts the monetary value. I think we've seen that with inheritors of businesses and other properties.
@@LibraGamesUnlimited People own individual copyright for their creations so long as the don't sign deals with companies. The reason that talented people compromise and make deals is because they grow tired of being poor, so they sell their souls for a comfortable lifestyle and then only afterwards when they realize how much they've been screwed over do they come to regret it. I've seen enough people fail in individual crowdfunding endeavors to know it's not foolproof for everyone who attempts it, I'm not saying they shouldn't attempt it, but success varies from person to person. The reason creators like Ethan and Zack are successful is because one has over three decades of experience and the other was a figurehead for ComicsGate and many people backed him for the sake of spiting the industry.
@@grayfox6518 I never said crowdfunding was foolproof nor did I even mention crowdfunding. I can't image if someone who has been in the comics industry for decades and is a well-known talent got control of characters they created and are now popular got the rights to them and said "I now have the rights to (insert character's name) and I'm going to do a trade paperback" that they would have indy publishers lined around the block or have the pull to do it themselves. However, I think an A-list creator with an A-list character they created would be able to crowdfund the heck out of it. It might be harder for the estate of a non-living creator like if the estate of George Perez got Deathstroke and wanted to do something, they would have to find someone to do it and the results would depend on the talent they make a deal with and other factors. Not saying that this would work for everyone but it would work for some and maybe they could band together and form a company or something.

I haven't bought a Marvel comic book since the Ultimates ended and even that ended in a fucking pile of ashes...right now we're just listening to the dust howling through the wind, like what remained Lot's wife she looked back at Sodom. Or in this case LA. But since Across the Spider Verse made more money than every single MCU movie release since endgame, yeah we're going to see Miles around for a while. A big part of it IS ideological. The comic pros are ideologically motivated, and the corpos allow and support it, because of potential issues with copyright.
Peter Parker is Spider-Man. He was your average nerd with the normal problems of growing pains. The thing that makes him special was after he got his powers, he embraced the danger even tho scared made many mistakes ( most of his main foes know his real identity) and like most heroes he excels in the most extreme conditions.
Ok. Do you remember the recent What if Miles Morales series of comics. An editorial excersice of Miles being any other super hero rather than Spider-Man? No? It happenened, was published and make sense Marvel toying with the idea of Miles OUT of the spider family. Now I get it.
Totally wrong . Spiderman and Dr. Strange were work for hire. Disney has been good about paying authors for work for hire and paying extra after the fact. Also, Miles was created to stand in much like Hulk for the MCU. Since he was created after the 1999 Sony deal they(Sony) did not have movie rights to Miles. Disney has settled much of these cases when they did not have to.
Let's be honest here, EVS. At this point it, pattern recognition would indicate that Marvel will disregard Parker's status as the most popular brand in favor of discarding him entirely so that they can call Morales 'Spider-Man' once and for all. These companies have had years now to realize what does and doesn't sell. They seem to be blatantly ignoring that data and have been doing so for years.
As they say, "follow the money". This type of situation makes much more sense for why comic companies have been shooting themselves in the foot over the last 10-20 years. All their major characters were created at roughly the same time and over the last 10-20 years the copyright issue has been rearing it's head. So, instead of fairly compensating the creators...create woke versions (and claim it's all because they support diversity). All these corporations are doing this crap because of money. Yes, they are losing money in some cases, but many times they can't get financing if they don't have DEI programs. Or there is a threat of the government using the IRS or something else to cause problems (which affects the bottom line). It's always about the money in the end. Corporations don't give a crap about diversity or ethics or anything except money. If the culture changed, they would fully embrace the KKK and moustache man if it meant staying in business and making money. The "woke" stuff is all just a front to justify why they are losing money. Because if they can't get financing through blackrock, then they will go out of business. So, who cares if you lose a bunc of money, it's better than going under completely and they can always lay off a bunch of lower level and middle management employees, while the exec's and stockholders keep their bonuses and dividends.
