Theo and Bee gave up their busy city lifestyles in 2014 to explore alternative living, and have lived in vans and boats since then without looking back! Along with their cat Ginjey Bear they have been driving around the world in their self converted Sprinter van. However, when the global pandemic hit they began converting their abandoned stone barn in Central Portugal to turn into a wonderful tiny stone cottage. Along the way, they have rescued a playful cat called Furrnando and have a wonderful flock of Chickens!

For the ants and other creepy crawlers, look into " food grade diatomaceous earth ". I was getting ants in the house so I sprinkled it in doorways and window sills (it's an old house). Problem solved. I dusted the cat with it when a squirrel got in and left some fleas behind. I did the carpets too.

hi Theo, I suggest getting Stihl Chaps. I was a salesman for Stihl. I remember a father brought his Stihl in because it wouldn't start. Found out his son had used it and hit his leg, and never told his dad. The Kevlar threads get pulled into the saw from the chain stopping it. Saving his leg.

Are you thinking about eventually renovating the stone house ruin? It would be a good place to either house volunteers or guests or even a farm hand to help out with your homestead, I know it will be a bit before you all can get to it but it is worth considering I would think.

I would suggest that you allow more room between the three large raised beds. Once planted the veg themselves will (may) overhang and you may find it difficult to negotiate between them for harvesting etc. The outside one looks like it could be moved right to the edge of patio allowing for more space between all of them.

Hi Guys, talk about click bait, what mistake? Do you mean the 1st position you chose for the beds? If that's the case it was easily remedied. Love the picture of Theo on the ad for the episode, is he naked? if so he's a nudist at heart and why not,, its the best feeling with the air on your body same with skinny dipping with the water, well a bonza day i know how it feels to finally get your garden beds ready to plant, it only took you one day with all your resources readily available on your land, I live in suburbia and on a very limited budget so I had to gather my wood bit by bit, use grass clippings that had no seeds, make all my own compost with my veggie scraps and teabags, I did have a bale of sugar cane mulch which I layered in and for my birthday my beautiful sister got me 9 bags of potting mix, oh the joy of topping it up, all i need now is a couple of bags of compost and some more mulch to begin planting to coincide with our spring, it has taken me a year, so you can imagine how I felt when it took you 1 only 1 day. Novelette finished, great to see you both and the animals so well and happy, cheers!!🥰🥵💕👌👍👍💪🫂🐈🐈‍⬛🐐🐔🐓🐜🐜🌱🌱🌿🌿

At 5:29 that beauty looks like a Catalpa tree. For garden pests, I keep a 50 lb bag of diatomaceous earth (DE) in the shed for my gardens. It’s just a ground up powder of fossil shells. It’s even used in toothpaste. Kills pests and is harmless to pets and humans. A 50 lb bag lasts for years at my house.

When I lived in cairns we use to have a second roof over top of the caravans. 6 inches above the van for air follow between. It makes a Hugh difference for cooling the van. In my camper van I used the roof racks to put the second roof on. Used shade cloth folded several times. Was fabulous. The chickens will love it. Ps. I would make it wider than the original for the chickens as well seeing as it's a stable area .

One thing I did this year planting to save water, I cut off the bottoms of pop bottles took the lids off of course, I inverted them into the soil beside Each tomatoe plant so that it would water the roots deep, I had the best most gigantic prolific harvest ever, give it a try. ALSO in a gallon of water soak a banana peel overnight, discard the peel, keep the water, pour into those buried inverted pop bottled Tomatoes just Love this potassium rich fertile. Do it once ever 3 weeks, also give your tomatoes something to climb, 3 plants, I had over 100 tomatoes each plant

Consider the heat being reflected by the driveway pavers and the stone the beds are sitting on, you’ve mentioned quite often how hot the summer is, your watering system will need to be regular and also penetrate deeply into the beds to both cool and water them.

Thinking doing your method but on pavers will mean soil and water spilling out from the bottom. Thinks it’s best to do it on top of earth that method. I’d put some kind of greenhouse fabric on the bottom and up the sides a bit to help keep in the contents

About the issue that you have with the ants , the best solution is natural lemon juice...they hate it... Another tip for your orchard is to put ashes of the wood fire around the veggies to avoid the snails from eaten them. I hope this tips help you. keep being so marvelous and enjoy life. Best wishes for both.

Ants are said to dislike cinnamon, I sprinkle it around door steps and window sills to keep them out of the house. I buy the largest containers I can find at dollar stores, and buy cinnamon sticks at close out holiday sales, no matter how old, just soak in hot water and when dried place ind cupboards and drawers! Yummy smelling solution!!!

The beds being on the concrete is nice and level, but there are considerations. The soil will heat up quickly and hold the heat. In the spring, that will give you a leg up on growing. In the summer it will cause a problem in a country as hot as Portugal. You will need to water the beds maybe twice a day and in the hottest months you may need to put up a fabric sail shade over the plants. Just keep an eye on the soil temps.❤️🤗🐝

Cinnamon. We’ve been here where we live now for over 10 years. First year in ants moved into all my plant pots, I spread a continuous thin line around them all. NO ANTS. They are still in the yard and remaining garden, just not in any of my pots! 🤷‍♀️😉❣️ Good luck Bea. Don’t forget newspapers, and cardboard for your beds, along with leaf matter. 💋❣️

A little tip: I have a cat, too, and she's not interested the catnip plants around our place. It's not until I harvest and dry the catnip that she loves it! She especially loves the toys I put the catnip in for her to play with like a wild cat. 😸 Also, my daughter's cat loves my catnip. She just puts some on a hardwood floor and the kitty will roll in it, and lick it off the floor. It's so funny! 😹
