Horse barns have tack rooms but detached garages (and work shops), sheds, and regular barns can do with a bit of a tack type room for the humans. A serious rain jacket or poncho is great if you're likely to have rain or snow storms pop up, some folks keep barn and barn waste boots in the barn with a place to put the "street shoes", also PPE type items ampnd a bit of a human emergency or medicine kit (even just a container of regular bandaides, use something like a repurposed, clear plastic peanut butter jar).

Good morning! As a retired mechanic and wood worker I would designate one side for wood working and the other for Metal work and mechanic station. Put your benches under the overhang against the wall and tool boxes in between.Your centre room is your tool crib - everything is accessible. All your big machines like table saws should be on wheels for clean up and ease of moving them around. Hope everyone has a GREAT weekend!!

At least one work bench on wheels so it can be rolled to where it's needed. My last shop had a bench with double 3/4" plywood top over 2x4 framing. Quite sturdy. Since then, I built another bench with 2x3 standing on edge, glued and screwed together. I added some 3/8" rod going front to rear to really firm it up, then coated with urethane. Neither of these was good for welding, which needs a metal top.
@johnmarsh481
@johnmarsh481 13 дней назад
Ted has hit the nail on the head separate areas with appropriate backup. Benches on rollers is always a plus and wood storage limited to the wood working area is necessary to increase efficiency. A shop is after all a SHOP. It also needs to be easy to clean after a project is completed.

With your red shelves you can actually eliminate the doubled up legs and gain 4 inches of wall space. The shelf beams will actually connect to the neighboring leg. With that, if you take the bottom shelf out since you have the floor as a shelf, which you can then place pallets or items on wheels under the shelving system. Then with the bottom shelves and legs you removed viola!! you have another whole section of shelving. I am not a big welder but Andrew @ "The Kelley's Country Life" made a pretty versatile welding table Titled "Building My Dream Welding Table"
@probablynot1368
@probablynot1368 13 дней назад
Wait…what? Aren’t you putting additional force on the horizontal and diagonal shelf bracing? By eliminating an entire set of legs/columns & side bracing, and joining two shelf units, aren’t you relying on one set of bracing to support the two adjoining units? Then, by eliminating the lower shelf, you’re raising the center of gravity of the entire unit. I think this will require some bolting to the wall studs for extra support.
@susanchase7880
@susanchase7880 13 дней назад
@@probablynot1368 If a unit of shelves can hold 1000 lbs, wouldn't you lose the ability of the shelving to hold 500 lbs. if you take away 2 legs. I'm not a math person but the claim is what the unit can hold, and the unit is the shelving plus 4 legs.
@probablynot1368
@probablynot1368 13 дней назад
@@susanchase7880 You wouldn’t lose 1/2 of the holding capacity; however, I can only guess 25% to 30% strength is lost with the elimination of the bracing and legs that transfer the load vertically. I think your shop needs roll around workstations. Maybe starting with one for the table saw. They can be moved around as needed for workflow but mostly so you can get good angles for video. I would also start thinking about overhead electrical cord reels for power tools and for lighting for video production. There are some nice adjustable height work tops commercially available. Or you can construct that are at good ergonomic heights for each of you. Also consider a dust collection system. And maybe an exhaust extractor that can be placed over an exhaust pipe. Definitely should have a flammable liquids cabinet. Consider organizing tools in kits, based on recurring tasks.

For tool storage, I would go to HF and get the 56" rolling cab tool box since it has a workbench. I would also get the 6 drawer full bank service cart so you can wheel it around the shop floor. For woodworking tools, just build some workbenches with tool storage cubbies underneath for the larger hand tools and drill racks for your battery hand tools. A few pieces of peg board or the new slat walls that are out now so that you can hang items on the walls where your work benches are. The slat walls allow flexibility for new and odd size tools.

If it were me, I would try to figure out how to build a platform that hangs from the roof in front of that wide door. Lower the platform, load it up with stuff, raise it up to the upper level and unload it. You have to keep the doorway area free anyway so you lose no space. The lift prevents you from having to throw the insulation up for example. You would use the space on the upper level more if it were easier to get stuff up and down.

Build a stationary table for welding with a metal sheet backing so sparks don't fly everywhere, plus you can add welding curtains on the sides and behind you as you weld.

Since I retired at the end of 2022…I started re-arranging and organizing my shop. I had nuts, bolts, wood screws, washers, electrical, you name it everywhere. I sorted everything into plastic “pack out” type cases and labeled everything. I now know what I have and “don’t” have.

as far as a workbench is concerned start on the wall at about 12" up from the floor, and put a full length "2x4 plate" on it then build the legs at a 45° angle up to the top of the work bench. as far as the top is concerned build a frame of 2x4s topped with 1/2" or 3/4" plywood or osb, if you want you can cover the top with a formica or other surfacing material to keep it clean and easy to maintain. this way you keep the floor easy to sweep.

What a good idea to cover up a double socket outlet with your fancy nuts and bolts set up. If you are serious about organisation then it's time you finished off jobs before you start new ones like putting covers on your electrical outlets, uncovering the windows in the door or at least tidying up the mess that's there. Also I would strongly recommend you put a safety barrier on your mezanine floor before you "accidentally" fall off. A fall from that height can really hurt. Health and safety may be different in the UK but falls still happen.

Hey Al and Gina. Love your vids. When you put those red units next to each other can't you just use one end piece between the shelves instead of two? Looks like the upright has two columns of holes so an upright can host a shelf on both sides. Then you extend their use.
@LumnahAcres
@LumnahAcres 13 дней назад
We can, but we don’t have any extra horizontal pieces so we’re just using all the legs up. And then if we want to move them in separate them in the future, we can.

If you eliminate the bottom shelf you can roll items in on the floor then gain more shelves by putting the extra cross bars in between two end pieces of a shelving unit.

I mounted most of my racks, toolboxes and racks on heavy duty castes so I can roll them to a project work areas if needed. It also gives me flexibility to re-arrange the shop to meet future needs. They can be hooked to the walls for stability if desired. I am having serious workshop envy.🤗

In the cupboard I have envelopes of all sizes and construction paper for makin greeting cards. I also have a wagon in front of the cupboard for portable painting when I want to paint a picture away from home. You have to do that now. Set up zones.

Looking great! As much as it would help to have the ultimate shop layout, I think it needs to be flexable to fit your workflow. Since the shop is new, you don't really know what is going to work. I think you need to complete a few projects before you can optimize having the tools and supplies where you need them. Try to minimize your steps and get things layed out in a linear fashion so you don't have crossing patterns. Before long, the way you work will let you know how to best lay things out.

Like the space you have. I’ve created three areas in my work room in Germany - electrical, wood and metal. They are at different levels and have their tools set up in each zone soldering station (precision work), drill press, grinder, chop saw so everything is no more than three feet from where I work. Anything big, or I haven’t used in more than three months is in the shed! You’re lucky to have the space I dream of! Look up Taylor Rays mobile welding and work island that’s on wheels and can be moved to where you need it
@DinSF
@DinSF 12 дней назад
Brutus 53 lbs. Can you show us a drawing of how you are thinking organizing? This will also help us better understand the space and layout? Im wondering if you might want to put wheels on one of the shelves for rolling the super frequent things or use the rolling shelf to put your new organzing boxes on and roll to what ever area you are working on? Im sure there are wheels with locks that won't bother the floor. And also have work benches with wheels too. Safety wise I would think putting the carpentry area as far away from the welding area would decrease fire chances from sparks catching wood. Also, have the carpentry area near the door so it's easier to clean and sweep the sawdust out the door. Because orgazing is a work in progress, I would wait before bolting things in permanently.

I'm an old mechanic and have had the bolt and nut bins for years. Nice set up. One word of caution, beware of the birds. I've had everything, from wrens to screech owls because the bins make the perfect nests. Got so bad one year I had to put a drape over the front to keep them out. Hornets like them to but not to often.🦉

We have the same shelves but in black. We did have to add some wood on top of the wire because what we have on the shelves was making it sag. We purchased the shelving units at least 13 years ago they still look like new with no issues. There is a lot of tool boxes out there. For the money we went with the Husky brand. They go on sale quite often. They have worked great for us.
