Steve Biko, an outspoken intellectual, led the Black Consciousness Movement in the 1960s. Bolstered by organisations such as Biko’s, a generation of students revolted against the government’s education policy on 16 th June 1976 in Soweto. Students were killed, as portrayed by Sam Nzima’s iconic photograph of a dying Hector Peterson. One year after the Soweto Uprising, Biko was beaten and tortured until he eventually died at the age of 33. But it didn’t stop there. The government continued assassinating countless other anti-apartheid activists.
