I live just east of Tulsa, in the rural part of the country. I've always known Don Williams and this song my whole life. But in my 20's, I heard a little band perform it in a little country bar near me. The only time I ever been in a bar in my life.
Nice! He was my gran's favourite male singer (after Johnny Cash) so I grew up hearing him, and I've always loved his voice (thanks gran, I too love both Johnny & Don) - Don's is so smooth, rich and warm (and surprisingly for a country singer without that super-southern "twanginess").
Don Williams served with my military unit before I did, the Army Security Agency, I have a picture of him from one of the guys of him in the barracks in Chitose, Japan with his guitar. Very young Williams. Good photo. This was a great line dance song.
Wow Harri I never thought how the beat is some what comparable to Billy Rae Cyrus. But I hear it too. You're so clever. Great reaction. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
I don't know if he be recorded a bad song. "Lord, I Hope This Day Is Good") is my favorite. "I Believe In You" is another great song by him. Go down that rabbit hole. You won't be disappointed.
This song came out the year before I was born. I can remember it being played on country radio regularly as a kid. It was still a pretty popular song well into the 80s. Thanks for the reaction to this classic, I had kinda forgot about it.
I heard this song hundreds of times and never took the time to understand the overall lyrics to the song until watching this. I knew the first verse was about leaving out west from Tulsa. But I never paid attention to how the second verse ended with the message that there's no shame in going back. Lol
Senorita, Til the Rivers All Run Dry, We've Got a Good Fire Goin', Desperately, Something 'bout You, I Sing for Joy, Good Ole Boys Likes Me, If Hollywood Don't Need You Honey I Still Do, Love is on a Roll ... just to name a few!
Went to one of his concerts back in the earlier 70s, he sat on a stool and sang his heart out just him another guitar player and a drummer, and yes he was cool
My wife is from Malawi, and when she told me that her whole family loved Don Williams, I was floored. Being from the southern U.S., I knew it was a sign, and I don't believe in signs. It was actually a curious cultural overlap that makes more sense as you consider it, but that just lends to our strength. Anyway, Don is important to me lol
Harri, you are so right! I, of course, have been around long enough to know both of those songs and after you said that, I started singing Achy Breaky (or however they spelled it for that song) and it did go together well with the music!
You should have a listen to Eric Clapton's version of this song. It's best, In my opinion, on the "Just One Night" double album set. There are a lot of great songs there. Thanks
