What I respect about Iwata is that not only was he a CEO, but he was an executive who actually was ALSO a game developer, and a pretty great one at that. (Just look at the stories surrounding Pokemon Gold and Silver or Earthbound, for example. He loved to save projects that were in limbo.) He was also at heart a gamer. He understood more of what it was like to have fun with playing games and wanted everyone to be able to enjoy it. He understood how they were made. He also understood business. That's why his quote is amazing. "On my business card, I am a corporate president. In my mind, I am a game developer. But in my heart, I am a gamer." In order to best understand how the industry was going, it was necessary for him to be all three.

CEOs nowadays use general entertainment (gaming, movies, TV programs, etc.) for the mere purpose of collecting checks, rarely, if ever, having a genuine regard for the staff that work on them. The trend was already noticeable from NES to SNES. Plenty of parents were already angry about buying a new box to play prettier versions of games their kids already own. NES to SNES, DS to 3DS; a strict upgrade will always do worse than the original. At least with the Wii and DS; kids could actually argue about entirely new experiences that couldn't be had one what they already owned. Honestly, the reason why the PS2 did better than PS1 was no small part thanks to DVDs.

It’s worth noting even Iwata’s predecessor, Hiroshi Yamauchi, who was still with Nintendo as chairman of the board and acted as a sort of advisor, said similar things that year. Not sure if it was an IGN interview, but I remember him saying something to the effect of “Increasing CPU power does not guarantee that the games will be more fun.” Interesting, since gaming consoles during Yamauchi’s run definitely tried to compete in terms of power. Seems like he had a change of heart.
@Ramona122003
@Ramona122003 4 месяца назад
It was more a change with the times. Having more powerful consoles did impacted gameplay since a game like Super Mario World wouldn't have been possible on the NES. Just as Mario 64 couldn't be done on the SNES. However, starting with the GameCube, fewer games wouldn't have been possible without the increase in power. Pikmin 1 being one of the few examples of a game that couldn't be done on the N64. After that, outside of the graphics, you would have a harder time naming games that wouldn't have been possible on old-generation machines.
@DocTime56
@DocTime56 4 месяца назад
@@Ramona122003adding to your comments, more power means devs have to get less creative to circumvent hardware limitations. Take for example Animal Forest on the N64, the reason the world curves was a measure to avoid popping, but it became a very distinctive part of Animal Crossing’s visual style. Or another example would be silent hill, the fog was just hiding how low the render distance was, but then they doubled down on it on Silent Hill 2 and became iconic to the series.
@Ramona122003
@Ramona122003 4 месяца назад
@@DocTime56 Graphic limitations play a big part in gaming. Mario's entire look happened because of the limits of technology at the time. Or how the doors in Metroid Prime were reworked from the 2D Metroid games to hid the load screens to make what appeared to be seamless world. Even during the Switch-era this is still in play. The Blood Moon in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom was design to refresh the world on top of respawning enemies. Which is why a 'panic' Blood Moon happens when the game is about to crash.

@PianistTanooki
@PianistTanooki 3 месяца назад
@@ssg-eggunner I didn't realize this comment got a good number of upvotes and pretty insightful responses, which I agree with. I should've specified that the Yamauchi quote I was referring to was from 2004, not from the 80s and 90s. In 2004, during the sixth generation of consoles heading into the seventh, graphical leaps were becoming increasingly less impressive. The jump from NES to SNES was a world of difference; the graphical leap alone made games far more fun and engaging. The same could be said from the SNES to the Nintendo 64. Super Mario 64 simply could not have been done on the SNES, and the evocative worlds fully realized in that game were enough to demonstrate this. (along with a nifty new controller with its analog stick) Like some of the other comments were saying, by this point, graphical leaps were giving us diminishing results. You couldn't say "this game on the PS3 is more fun because of its visuals" the same way you could with the examples that you were giving me. Sure, there was still a noticeable difference between the Wii and PS3/360, but over the next couple of generations, the difference between Nintendo's consoles and its competition became increasingly less noticeable. (Also worth noting, I was talking about Yamauchi in my original comment… and I had no idea that Iwata himself talked about him in that interview! Went and watched the whole thing myself last night, good stuff!)

I mean... all he did was take the trends he was noticing to their logical conclusion. The N64 received so few games because games were taking longer to develop at the quality that Nintendo wanted, especially without third party developers to fall back on. We saw the same trend with the incoming 7th generation consoles, where to compensate for game development times of increasing length, publishers quickly remastered older games in HD. Back in the days of the NES, games could theoretically be made in a few months or, in some cases, weeks. Iwata understood that. He understood that there was a middle ground that had to be met to maintain trust with the consumer. At the time, his understanding may have been a bit too safe compared to today, but the core idea stood and still stands today. What Iwata believed was less of him being a "prophet" and more of him taking things to their logical conclusion, while also playing things safe for the time. Him being on the nose today is the result of the trends he noticed not slowing down over time.

Yeah, it's more about a guy who knew what the hell he was doing in terms of making video games having a proper understanding of the industry he was in. Microsoft and Sony fell for fools gold. "Make a more powerful gaming box and BOOM we win!". It seemed to work during the N64, Gamecube, and WiiU eras because they flopped and Sony had no competition. When Nintendo had a competitive platform out, they won, every single time and with less powerful hardware. If the Switch 2 has similar success to the Switch, it will effectively kill the PlayStation and the Xbox.

N64 & Gamecube were both powerful competitors. N64 & Gamecube both had plenty of great games, although Wii U's library seems like when Nintendo was at their weakest from a game perspective. Microsoft never actually understood the game market & simply got lucky early on with Xbox & Xbox 360. Sony at least understood the importance of actually selling games & had cool exclusives over the years they just fell into the trap of being too powerful for their own good while lacking actual creativity. Nintendo has the clear advantage & its competitors will be out of the console business in 10 Years if they fail to learn from Nintendo now.

I know what's going on with Xbox, but any time I hear about PS5 sales, it sounds like it's selling fine even though I know a lot of people are frustrated with some of the decisions coming out of Sony. So what's all this gloom and doom around the PS5? (And just for the record, I'm one of those PS4 owners who hasn't upgraded yet, and there's a good chance I'll just by the next Nintendo and call it a day. IOW, I'm not a die hard fan reflexively defending Playstation).

@SaltyToad00 oh yes it is. The "name" itself was a great deterrent on its own. It sounded silly. No hardcore pretentious COD player would ever admit owning a "weeyoo" or even brag about it, even if it had Smash. The Switch on the other hand, is a lot easier on the ears. And despite it cutting down various gimmicks, it still ended up being the highest-selling console ever. Therefore, brand still actually matters

The Nintendo Switch isn't as powerful but it had changed handheld gaming forever. If you had said during the 3DS era that the next Nintendo handheld would have the first open world Zelda game. And a smash bros with 89 playable fighters. two sequels to xenoblade. a 64 style 3d mario game that is 10 times as big as mario 64. The rumored metroid dread. It’s probably cause grew up on Nintendo and is still my preferred gaming platform out of the big 3 but graphics and realism never really mattered to me or like was my main concern with how games looked moving forward. When playing a game I just want a good completed experience that sticks with me for years to come. I’d much rather see a unique style over something that looks real cause all these games are starting to blend into each other. Iwata-san was such a great president, cared about the games, helped the devs of melee, and by the way he was right about modern gaming. He knew this was coming for the future of gaming just like how 1984 or Wall-e (not games btw) warned about the current state of the world. From my point, from 2005 - 2013 during the 360/PS3/Wii days we've seen an extreme amount of great AAA titles (including alot of original IP), good licensed titles (e.g web of shadows, war for cybertron, arkham games etc), games with smaller budgets and dev time (minecraft, new vegas etc) and so on, but as the years go by the AAA industry got greedy, chose graphics over what makes games fun esentialy making games as tech demos, relies more on microtransactions. but the worst part going on recently is with the layoffs, anti-consumer practices, next gen not ready presumably due to the pro versions of 8th gen hardware (which also has good games on sony, 3rd party's part) which makes it no point to own a next gen console. But for Nintendo despite their legal practices regarding copyright, emulators etc still knows on how to make great fantastic games while focusing on what matters is the GAMEPLAY. and also by the way people are switching to PC (parts that can handle newer games got cheaper since like mid 2023) which is a more superior platform to play new and old games nowadays. The end. RIP Iwata

2004 and predicted problems that'll arise 16 years later. Damn, he really knew his stuff going in. (FYI, most games at the time can be made in 2-5 years. Technically, they can be made in a year, but obviously, that shows the lack of effort already.) Anything to note, Cyberpunk 2077 started development in 2011 and finished in 2020. Yet, we're starting to see games have similar production cycles. It's already into the 5-7 years for most triple A games now.

Seeing this interview has given me a whole new perspective on things, especially in the wake of all the bad news coming from PlayStation and Xbox. I’m never going to get away from believing games and consoles with better graphics will always look nice, but we’ve reached a point where video game graphics are never going to get any better than they are now. I’m more interested in games having compelling gameplay and unique art styles this generation. I’m currently playing a game called Foundry on PC. It has worse graphics than something like Ghost of Tsushima, but it’s an open-world game where players can build factories in a voxel-based world, and that kind of gameplay is really exciting to me.

The thing about Hellblade is that the devs actually wanted to produce the most high-fidelity interactive movie possible with current technology. The fact that it's a playable game is just a neat bonus. Hellblade just sets another milestone in realtime graphics that other studios attempt to emulate, while trying to build an actual game around it - so most of the budget and time just vaporizes into the messes that are being released nowadays.

Thanks for this video. I hear that concern about "a more powerful Switch" sounding boring. I don't think it will be as bad if Nintendo went that route (compared to other "more powerful console" transitions). The Switch was such a game changer it made everyone rethink how to play their video games. For the past few years, when the topic of Switch 2 speculation came up, most comments would read "I just want a stronger Switch for more AAA ports". I share that same hope, and I also share your hope that Switch 2 offers more than better specs to separate itself from the original Switch.

For a while there has been an argument that pursuing graphics and more power just for the sake of upping how pretty a game was always going to result in deminishing returns. That it didn't matter in the long run. As that power is not being used to improve the actual gameplay. Hell, one could argue you could improve gameplay with less power. Case in point, soooo many examples through Nintendo. This was always going to happen. Nintendo was smart to avoid this pursuit entirely seeing the predictable dead end that the others are now emcountering. It's just now, we're seeing those words be proven true. He also talked about that if we were entirely beholden to constantly, just only respond to what the market wants instead of trying to nurture new IPS into success. That games like Tetris not only would have never been made, but they would have also gotten feedback in order to follow trends. That would make no sense of Tetris like putting in a popular soundtrack from a major recording artist for no reason. Making the graphics all high-end 3D with HDR lighting and stuff that's not needed to make the game actually work in terms of a game. And seeing all the games that we wish we had and studios that we were she had that were canceled as well as like watching companies. I didn't appreciate Iwata then, but he is probably one of the reasons I enjoy gaming as much as I do. The Nintendo DS is one of my favorite and memorable gaming experiences ever and it is due to all of the unique features like touch screen and dual screens. It was such a breath of fresh air. I still remember when I first got it. It was unlike anything I ever seen. Games like Nintendogs blew my mind. The technology allowed for such a diverse catalogue of games. It is a shame so many unique features are seen as gimmicks by a lot of gamers which incentivizes everyone to make better versions of the same thing. Even little changes like the gyro aiming took a while to become more accepted. I hope the next generation consoles do more to differentiate themselves. I really enjoy my Switch and Quest 3 due to how refreshing they feel. I do value presentation and do get excited about upgrade in graphical fidelity, but I don't need the graphical upgrades to all go into photorealism and I wish more of this gen focused more on the gameplay side. I think the reason it is boring to some is due to the nature of gameplay being kind of stagnant.
