Quick critique , there was a time in rap where mixtapes were more hyped than albums. It gave artist a chance to release a compilation of raw original ideas instead of mainstreaming most songs for albums. Come up Warm up Friday night lights (Wayne)no ceilings The list goes on

J. Cole didn’t have permission to release “Friday Night Lights”. That’s why on GOMD he states, “Even Hov tried to keep it and I leaked the damn tape”.

Man not gone 🧢, while everybody a bandwagon hopper that LOVED J.cole from the jump, i thought hewas mediocre. Just me. Always did. I liked some scattered songs here and there. It was like almost to Forest hills before i really was like wow. I WAS a day one listener, but I WASNT a day one fan. But he def grew on me and made me a believer.

I really only got into rap after forest hills drive dropped so for me it was diving back into an artist I already enjoyed. I definitely like songs from his older projects but there is the occasional miss.

I never really liked J Cole up until pretty recently; his albums weren’t nearly as smart and as well thought out as Kendrick’s, and his music wasn’t nearly as melodic and enjoyable as Drake’s. But he’s really loosened up over the years, collabing with non lyrical-miracle artists and really going on a crazy feature run as of late…

I’ve been listening to J.Cole since 2007. Honestly I don’t see why everyone is saying he’s top tier. J.Cole been sounding the same since 2007 🤷🏾‍♂️. Now is he top tier in the bars and in his flow absolutely! But still waiting on him to put out a album better than Kendrick’s “DAMN”

Sometimes music doesn’t gel with people for a number of reasons. For me Cole has always dominated Kendrick, Kendrick is great but, imo, struggles with replay ability at times.

Clicked off? Also I wasn’t trying to compare songs from the same time, just to getter point across. Even in the video that I showed a few times Cole compared it to songs that were not released within years of Who Dat, but the songs he mentioned he could’ve heard before they were released.

He dropped some of the worst performing songs at the time and the label was consistently unhappy with what he made, it just aged well. At the time it seemed like failure though.

"he blew up off mixtapes the industry didn't respect that yet " Wrong the labels were using mixtapes for rap artist to get a buzz before releasing a single and then the album ... Labels were using that formula since it worked for 50 cent in 2002 ... 6 years before j Cole got signed ... You also had acts like young Jeezy and lil Wayne blow up off mixtapes and have large commercial success so the idea that labels didn't respect artist blowing up off mixtapes is wro f
@MattMiranda
@MattMiranda 5 месяцев назад
This definitely could be true. Based on what I saw there was a time where people started to think mixtapes were getting old and that something more cohesive proves more of the artist, I could have worded it better for sure.
