What makes these so good is the restraint and the taste. It doesn't scream or yell to make itself known. It simply flows with you and your surroundings.
It’s a river flowing grass roots growing type of sound, the kind of nice stuff always going on in the background type of sound, good things around the corner but you don’t know what things kinda sound. The heart feels a message it don’t need to be loud!
I resonate with that totally, I remember when I found this tape and started listening to it more thinking “there could be more, more bass and kicks, more tricks and whatnot” But really it don’t need that, thanks for putting my thoughts and feelings into words that are easy on the eyes.
Aye - took the words out my mouth; that's what makes these so artful. Sometimes restraint is just what's needed to let the jockey's concept shine through.
and the 'imperfect' mix. Much feeling is let in. I don't know if he was using EQ maybe just straight pitch and volume w samples, but damn they are alive. Just the kick on the first track for example.
His music sounded like life. Like walking outside and the scenery speaking to your soul as people pass by and momentarily stare into your soul and proceed into their daily lives.
@@Amy-gf7je sorry to depress you with it. It's just the visual I got when I heard the very first beat. It made me see that. How precious, fragile, and timely life is and the many lives we see and pass by everyday, momentarily glance at and go on not knowing what that person's fate is and you just crossed their path on their way to it.. and vice versa.
Anything from Dilla smokes everything existing on the air today! Too bad some people just don't know the level of genius and creativity he gave the world!!
I Salute all of you in the comments, I started following Jay Dee back in the 1999/2000; I was 19 at time. And I remember okay player message board and Renaissance Soul website was where I discovered new Dilla music, at the time he dropped stuff every other week. It was truly a fun time in my life. Reading all these comments, brings back memories from that era! Blessings to you for keeping the Genius of James Dewitt Yancey alive, through your enjoyment of his musical gift.
I was working at Tower Records in the Bay Area when I found him. I also grabbed Donuts by random because they had instrumentals. I was really into instrumental albums at the time. Really was a dope time for Hip Hop.
@Real DJ you got tapes straight from the one and only?? Wow, that's amazing. I'd love to chat to you about that. Have you digitized them yet? my email is in the video description and I'd love any info of those historical gems
For anime fans, You can clearly hear the influence J Dilla left on Nujabes in this tape. Nujabes would produce his album just 7 years later and his sampling and tempos from Samurai Champloo match the entire vibe of this album. You could have told me Nujabes produced this and put Samurai Champloo on the cover and it would have fit. Two legends both now gone but with music that will live forever.

He had quite an ear for good music. Exquisite taste runs in his family. We really are blessed to be able to listen to his body of work, god bless the Yanceys.
@@benitolazio8193 The way J Dilla made beats was actually revolutionary and inspired whole genres of music as well as changes in other existing genres, look into it you might find it interesting
R.I.P. one of the greatest to ever make music. These beats still inspire and motivate me, a huge loss yes but we gained so much just having this man's work bless and improve our lives!
JD missed man Detroit is missing you, the rhythm kitchen hip hop shop and all other clubs we used to frequent to get our stage time on... man love this you must be a Yancey bumping all jds new stuff...
The flute bossa nova sample at 7:50 is "Copacabana" by Herbie Mann. It's the same sample used on the track "The Self Science" by the rap group Self Scientific.
I never heard of this guy until today...some odd reason I'm in the whip chilling go to BT my phone to the whip and I look n see this Jay Dilla guy and I just hit play...Gotta say this is bringing me that 90s nastalga highschool vibes and from all the live comments I had to check him out💪
I love the differences you can hear from the retail versions of these songs. 1nce again sounds more jazzy, like it could be on the midnight marauders album. stakes is high sounds way rougher, more grimy.
Just came across this 15 minutes ago and I am lost in the music! Dilla knew exactly what to do with samples and his drums have always been next level! He's definitely inspire ALL of my instrumental albums. Thank you for dropping this magic !
41:37 First time ever hearing that one. I'm ah' Tru DILLA-HEAD!!! Been deceased, unfortunately for us all. Still in all, he continues to refreshingly surprise me with new fire-ass beats... posthumously!!! J DILLA FAN 4LIFE OVEAH' HEAH', MU' BOI!!!!
Hard to put into words the journey this takes one through. Understated and calming; No need to go through and sing its praise but it's just straight raw, impeccable flow, outstanding editing, and incredibly personal to listen to. What's astounding is just how profound a track can sound just changing the pitch and the speed from its final cut; Rip Off the Roof immediately comes to mind - this version is just magical. Dilla truly knew how to make samples come alive. Hope to one day see the whole body of his work up to continue to explore to its entirety. But until then I (and those of us listening to this one the regular) will have you and others that share these rare beats to thank for the incredible work you guys do for the scene. Much love.
I really miss beats like these, just chill atmospheric, not over produced and jazzy with DEEP spunding natural drums. We really need to bring these back.
I still can't believe i'm finallt listening to the complete "rio off the roof" instrumental. The one i've been listening to was missing a few bars and it's just not the same... merry christmas yall!!!
I recognize some of these beats from songs. But I love how dirty they sound here. It’s like these are off an actual beat tape before being chosen for a song and polished up for radio
Thank u for this gift, i quickly went through it and there are some beats ive been waiting to hear for years! I cannot wait to listen tot this tape after work, ur a legend for this one 💯
Majority of his posthumous releases are beats he hasnt even finished yet. Not talking about this tape but just speaking on how skilled he was. Man rip jay dee. The funkiest!
