I loved Jack Klugman. Loved him in four iconic episodes of The Twilight zone. Loved him in 12 Angry Men. Loved him in Quincy.
And of course loved him as the ever sloppy Oscar Madison, co-starring with Tony Randall, in the legendary TV comedy, the original version of THE ODD COUPLE, which ran on ABC from .1970 through 75.
Klugman was an unforgettable character actor, who enriched the parts he played with unblemished humanity, at turns able to make you laugh - or cry - often at the same time.
In 1989, a lifetime of cigar smoking had led to throat cancer, and one of Jack’s vocal chords was removed, leaving the actor nearly voiceless. But what could have been the end of his acting career was merely a next chapter, thanks to his friendship with Tony Randall, who had played Felix Unger opposite Klugman’s Madison.
This interview with Jack is from a few years before he passed away at age 90, in 2012. It is difficult to listen to, because of the ravages of Jack’s cancer.
But the stories he tells are worth listening to. Jack's humanity, humor and heart still shine brightly.

I seen an interview he was sitting on a chair talking to a guy and his voice had come back. Didn’t even sound like this. Guess he got a bit better

perpetually underrated actor, which is bizarre, considering not just his talent and heart but credentials. so fortunate to have grown up watching The Odd Couple, one of the all-time great shows (and also it seems underrated by fools who don't know better). they actually out-did Matthau and Lemmon, which all but defies the laws of physics.

Never heard a disparaging word about Jack Klugman. That in itself is an amazing tribute to a great actor and human being.

Never mind the voice, watching Jack Klugman makes me smile. As you said at one point, his face is so expressive, he can melt you with a look. And even at 84 the vitality is jumping off of him.

I;m wiping my eyes! Wonderful. wonderful documentary about a beautiful talent and human being. My late father- director SIdney Lumet - who worked with him in Live Televsion- Kraft Playhouse 90 and in 12 Angry Men - loved him, too. Your feelings for him are evident and I give you a huge hat tip, David and @PopGoesTheCultureTV-- thank you so much for this much-needed peek into a real and vital time in American Entertainment -- which could not have existed without the huge hearts of these early tv veterans. They were pros -- and they remained grateful-- as my father -- and everyone who grew up in the 20s and 30s remained grateful -- for every job. It's so different from nowadays. Klugman, Randall, Lemmon, Matthau, Benny, Burns, Allen, Simon, Marshall, Carson, DeCordova, Marx, Fiedler, Cox, Harris, Brooks, Reiner, Lear, Adams, Henry, Blanc... these wonderful verterans of Broadway, Yiddish Theater, Vaudeville, the Borscht Belt, and Live Televison. The discipline, the skill, the love of their craft.... I feel like they are old friends of mine and I feel like you are an old friend now. Thank you for this wonderful interview-- I am excited to share it. Jack Klugman remains an American Treasure. Thank you for the laughs-- and tonight, the tears, Jack. They were all gone too soon -- thank God for their performances where they will be with us forever. That's a crowded poker table up there, David Levin. Beautiful interview. Well done, my friend.

Wonderful man! I lost my left vocal cord in 1991 after thoracic surgery due to an aortic aneurysm and a stroke. I was able to get a Teflon vocal implant several months later. Got a portion of my original voice back. Jack's loss of his voice but his hard work to regain his acting abilities were a major inspiration for me. A great man.

I remember the television series Quincy when I was very young but I didn’t absolutely fall in love with Jack until this year when I watched the whole entire series of Quincy. I didn’t know cause I did not keep up with the entertainment news of the time but I did not know that he went through what he went through and lost his voice practically. The beginning of the video is a bit heartbreaking because if you’ve never heard it which that’s me it’s a shock. But it sounds like he did not miss a beat and I think that’s what makes him more amazing and now I am more in love with him now than I was recently. He’s absolutely adorable and I am now going to Audible to see if I can find his book hopefully an audio form. This was a really interesting portion of your interview with him thank you very much for posting the video. Everyone take care, take it easy and be safe🥰🥰💖💖

My dad is almost 84 right now. Jack Klugman said in this interview that he's almost 84 (you guys said he's 88). Either way, he and my dad look about 72-75, tops. Very active, 100% mental acuity, physically fit, always doing something. Rarely sitting down, unless after dinner, then he's reading a book or on computer. I hope my dad lives to at least 90 like him. If he's able, I'd love for him to go 95 or 100. (Mom is fine, too, and in similar shape.)

I am convinced the reason this interview is hard to understand is not because of klugman's voice post surgery. It is because of a technical issue either the microphone was too close or there's some kind of digital digitizer distorting the sound. I've seen many interviews with Klugman post-surgery and there was never a digitized reverberation in the background. This appears to be the only interview. so the fact that it's hard to understand is not due to Klugman but it's due to technical issues, not klugman's voice.

I think he is very understandable, although it’s very sad that he didn’t have the self discipline needed to quit smoking. People don’t realize how many toxins-over 100-are in cigarettes. There’s insecticides, pesticides, formaldehyde, arsenic, etc, along with tar, & nicotine. Cigarette or cigar smoking is very bad for your health! Vaping is also just as dangerous! Life can be enjoyed so much more without the addiction to potent substances!
