When I decided to buy an EV in 2017 I wanted a Tesla model 3. At the time, there was a very long delivery period (6 months to a year) so I settled for a Hyundai Ioniq Eelectric. It doesn't have the autonomy of a Tesla but with a much smaller battery (28KWh) I can drive more than 250 km (155 mi) before charging (except in the canadian winter where the cold drastically reduces the autonomy). It cost 10 000 $ less than the model 3 and I'm very satisfied with it. I can't imagine going back to an ICE car. I'm not a fan of conspiracy theories but this one makes a lot of sense.

Well done. I have a Toyota Hybrid, as are all the taxis in Sydney(and no doubt elsewhere) and it is terrific. Uses half the fuel and has great low end torque. Hope that Toyota shelves their silly hydrogen idea, the thought bubble of their aging maestro, and gets with the EV trend. I'm sure that they will see sense; it's all about the availibilty of batteries just now.

My problem is that I could not afford a $50k (CDN) car on a fixed income. With luck I was able to buy my 2018 VW e-Golf before the incentive rebates in Ontario were cancelled by the newly elected provincial government. I love my EV and I agree with the presenters here ... I am not going back to the ICE age!. If I could afford one I would love to test drive and most likely then purchase a Tesla but it seems a remote possibility.

It isn't just Tesla. Plenty of 'news' articles criticising renewable energy too on completely false premises and ignoring the massive issues with electricity generation from fossil fuels. You are correct that younger people are way more enthusiastic about EVs.

There are plenty of reasons to criticize renewables. The German experiment is imploding. It gave them nothing but expensive electricity and bad emissions. I'm comparing against nuclear of course, not fossil fuel. If Germany had spent their hundreds of billions of renewables Euros on reactors they would have had a carbon free grid and cheap, reliable electricity by now. It's absolutely amazing how renewables supporters can say that climate change is an immediate existential threat and then go on to completely reject nuclear although it's both lower carbon, safer, more reliable, doesn't need storage, takes up very little land, and enabled the fastest buildout of grid electricity in history. It's more or less a religion at this point.

Just buy a Chinese EV. There are literally hundred models available. And way cheaper with the incentives. Like the VW Lavida electric that just has been introduced for CN¥160,000 (US$25k) with a range of 275km. Or how about a BYD the new Tang ist gorgeous. Or the BYD Pro. Or how about a mini car with the size of a Smart like the ZhongTai e200 after incentives for CN¥60k (US¥8.5) there is literally no need to buy a Tesla. The BYD e6 Taxis in Shenzhen, show the development. I was just in e6 that has driven 317,000km in 18 month! You do have super charger stations in Shenzhen with up to 600(!) stalls. So the Teslas will become mainstream cost in just a few years. They are leading battery development and I predict Legacy auto will have to buy the Tesla “skateboard” or die... @focusedfowl8981
@focusedfowl8981 5 лет назад
I actually witnessed this at SEMA in 1996...There was a firm called Coats Engineering who had invented bolt on replacement heads for the major ICE Engine blocks around the world...the difference was instead of using valves in the heads, they used a rotating lobes on a camshaft for intake and exhaust thereby eliminating up and down movement and converting it to rotary movement. The result was staggering increases in RPM for all engines...the higher RPMs resulted in way more power output or a reduction in displacement to achieve the same power=better fuel efficiency. The entire booth and all materials disappeared after being open 4 hours! I have never seen the technology emerge again.

c. 65% of USA electricity production is fossil fuel, including lots of coal. 20% nuclear. So to considerable extent into the foreseeable future it shuffles the oil/natural gas usage from vehicles to central power stations (which are more efficient than cars but still burn the fossil fuels.). Large scale conversion would require immense amounts of lithium (e.g.) and it makes sense oil companies would switch over as they have the global supply chain well oiled.

This is what I've been saying for years. The idea isn't to bankrupt Tesla. Its to DELAY their growth as much as possible. The trick is, automakers look at this as a failure of the market to adopt Tesla, so they fail to act. In reality, Tesla's path of innovation is just being slowed. Think of how many incredible projects Tesla has had on schedule that have had to be delayed or cancelled due to their various cash crunches. Think about WHY they've had layoffs. Right now they are being forced to run as efficiently as possible. This isn't a viability conversation, its an autonomy versus investment conversation. Point being, do they want to continue to raise money to cover their gaps (at the risk of dilution), or do they want to trim as much as they can to keep operating and moving forward. When you look at it this way, if treated like a normal company, Tesla would be destroying the market. We'd already have Gigafactories, $25K entry level Teslas, Tesla Pickups, Tesla Semis, and some of the lowest cost batteries on the planet. When you squeeze a company like the market has squeezed Tesla, you prevent them from spending more money on engineers, testing, R&D labs, college programs, etc. That has a direct effect on how quickly they can realize new technology developments, and in turn, push their company forward.
@ahaveland
@ahaveland 5 лет назад
What they can't squeeze though is time, regardless of how the market is doing. It may take just 1 engineer in their basement to make a breakthrough that will bust the dam completely.
@dr-k1667
@dr-k1667 5 лет назад
Excellent point and perspective given here. BUT, the other side of the squeeze is a blessing in disguise. In having to get lean, trim the fat, cut the waist and remove the dead weight, the company is better and the core of what they want to do, the breakthroughs, the innovations and the mind boggling amount of dynamic changes and new thinking, has resulted in this company becoming more of a threat... not less. Their dominance is going to be even more pervasive, brutal and out of left field, the acceleration of how this will come to pass is probably going to be due to Elon saying they have to tighten their belt and so this squeeze, has turned the coal... into the diamond that will cut through the &(^(*& and probably bring about the changes faster and better through out ( cost wise) than it otherwise would have. Tesla is inevitable.

Because it is: Eating fatty foods is directly measurable as more lipids in the bloodstream. So the more often that happens to your vascular system, the more plaque builds up in your arteries. Sugar is bad for other reasons, like increased risk of type 2 diabetes and caries, and ingesting excessive calories in any form will make you fat. However keeping your energy intake on level with what you burn, it is physically impossible to gain weight, without violating the law of thermodynamics! So when people claim that soft drinks makes you fat, they are talking about people ingesting more calories than they need on top of what they eat op fat and protein, and in that sense they are right, but it is an unscientific conclusion as the comparison is made on different premises by not using the same calorie intake when comparing High sugar and low sugar diets.

It would be useful to have another Teddy Roosevelt to shake things up in the finance world but the finance world (and their great partners, the fossils and their Republican mensch impersonators) have made sure that there are no Teddy Roosevelt wannabees out there and the closest there was (likely John McCain) they made sure that they clipped his wings as much as they could, without being obvious. The oil company that delivered the heating oil to his family's house heard about it and gave him money for his idea on the provision that he never tells anyone about it. So, yeah, it happens. Once the absolute cost of the Tesla EV falls below the cost of ICE, and the long term cost of ownership, and the cost per mile has already dropped -- there will be a 500 mile range, and a million mile battery. Once that happens, we have hit the tipping point. The transition could happen as quickly as Tesla can manufacture cars. IT IS ALREADY GROWING EXPONENTIALLY.

@irsalman
@irsalman 5 лет назад
Pham Nuwen what are you talking about? “Electricity so cheap” it’s $.10 a KWH in most of the US. This is for advertising purposes not “competing with taxis”. If someone thinks a free supercharge is worth it they will use their Tesla to chauffeur people and introduce the brand to hundreds of people a week for $.10 per KWH it’s their option. It’s their business if they think the pennies Tesla is spending on KWH is worth it. I wouldn’t do it because electricity is cheap.

@@irsalman You're not making any sense. Either electricity is cheap, in which case people will choose Teslas when they drive uber because it makes economic sense even if they need to pay for electricity. Or it's expensive and needs subsidies from Tesla. If it's cheap, Tesla doesn't need to subsidize it. If it's expensive, subsidizing it might be good from a marketing point of view. Assuming of course that the Uber riders don't figure out that their ride is subsidized and Teslas don't actually work economically as an Uber vehicle without this artificial support.

Yes, the prices (of batteries?) are ridiculous. It's, simply, NOT profitable for a "regular" person to get a EV (and sometimes not even a hybrid); those who simply do not drive a lot, the starting price is so high, that 20 years of paying for gasoline won't match it... EDIT: Probably, possibly, "slow" adoption is good in a way, allowing for infrastructures to get made - and not creating a spike in the prices of electricity. Though, it's bound to happen: the more people need something, the more it'll cost - instead of it being the other way around... More and more people paying for something means an increase in profits, but the main driving factor (today) has become GREED, meh. AKA "If I don't do it, somebody else will" (The most disgusting "philosophy" of the day, blah.)
