On March 14, 1964 a jury of 12 in Dallas found Jack Ruby guilty of murder by malice of alleged presidential assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald. Ruby famously shot Oswald on live television in the Dallas Police Headquarters basement as Oswald was being transferred out. The defense's question of Ruby's sanity was rejected, and he would be sentenced to death barring an appeal that was expected to be denied. Ruby's defense attorney, Melvin Belli, known for his colorful demeanor, gave this vivid reaction to the press. Belli claimed Dallas jurors made some 30 errors in this case, the outcome of which was deliberated for only 19 minutes. Credit: KRLD-TV/KTVT/The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza. Love Joe Tonahill, "I'm about to throw up!" Great clip. One day I walked past Melvin Belli's office in San Francisco. He had an office on the first floor a building with a big window so he could look out to the street. The day I walked by he wasn't at his desk. All I remember seeing were a lot of papers and several prescription bottles. He was quite a character.😃 I remember watching TV in the '60s. He would appear on AM San Francisco (KGO-TV) with host Jim Dunbar and the Zodiac Killer would call in.

If you have the facts on your side argue the facts. If you have the law on your side argue the law. If you don't have the facts and you don't have the law then you pound the table! That's what Belli's doing here.

Ruby's lawyers actually did get his conviction for killing Oswald overturned, so Belli must have been right about the errors he said the judge had made. A month or two before Ruby's new trial was to begin, in February or March, 1967, Ruby died in prison of a very fast-growing cancer. Ruby said he'd been injected with cancer cells while in prison. The CIA had been working for several years on developing a very fast-growing cancer, hoping to use it to kill Castro.
