Coming from someone in San Francisco, I appreciate your coverage of this issue. I strongly disagree with the notion of this being a “victimless crime” or “only cost $200” like one individual said. Further justifying his actions by saying, “at least we’re not putting a gun in their face.” This is not a victimless crime and it certainly does not only affect rich people and cost must more than $200. I’ve had my broken window 3 times, since I can’t afford low deductible insurance it’s cost me $400-$600 per incident. I know musicians who have had their instruments stolen, writers who have had notebooks with years of notes and diaries stolen, teachers who have had materials they had paid for out of their own pocket for their class stolen. None of these people are weathly and it cost them much more than $200. It cost them their livelihood, creativity, money, made them angry, sad and disappointed in their city. So these individuals can live a life of crime if they would like but don’t disrespect the honest people of San Francisco by saying this is a victimless crime that only impacts the rich.
If you behave at the expense of other people, you will need drugs or alcohol to mask the pain of feeling sh1tty about yourself. You're supposed to feel like sh1t when you do wrong. By masking it with drugs , it just perpetuates a longer, slower, more damaging downward spiral. If you behave for the benefit of other people, you feel good about yourself , opportunities land in your lap, and people like you.
In other countries, the thieves would expect to lose a hand for their crimes. I'm not saying we should stoop to that level, but clearly a couple days in jail isn't doing much for deterring this sort of behavior.
I just watched your KIA boys video the other day. Last night someone broke into my car an took a bag with around 300 dollars worth of stuff and my medicine. It was parked in a driveway. That guy was saying getting bipped is not a big deal and you can just replace the stuff, but I have this super uneasy feeling following me. I just feel so sad and violated that someone did that. I feel really uncomfortable and stressed and depressed, and thats without damage to my car. I cant imagine coming across your window being busted in and stuff taken. Theres such a disconnect here between them and their understanding of people is terrible. Obviously this is a way of discarding the guilt of doing something wrong.
The cops politely telling you to film further out of people's way while the swap went down in the Subway was unreal. Super well put together all around, 10/10.
To be fair, people meet up in public when they're selling normal goods that aren't ill gotten gains. This just happened to be a funny case of dramatic irony.
The scene of Jack the Bipper teaching Andrew to mix his yolks on his plate is one of the best things I've ever seen. It's so strange to see how real, unfiltered, gritty realism can be so soft and uneventful
@@moejuggler6033 You need more human experience then. Get uncomfortable around other people so you know when to REALLY be uncomfortable. It's a survival trait. It's why we crave attention.

Just needs to keep his hand to himself when he's drinking... Cheap shot sorry. Keep up the good work though, i love that you asked yourself what would hunter do.
Seriously though. It portrayed him in a completely different light. I was surprised when he said “dam now that I know you have never done dope, I’ll make sure to keep you away from all that”. Wishing him the best of luck in the future
Andrew, you have a gift of being able to tell very soul touching stories. I've been home sick the last week, feeling sorry for myself over various life circumstances, and your videos always help me gain a healthier perspective on my life. Keep doing what you're doing.
I think his gift is making his subjects feel comfortable in telling their own stories. You often see them talk for long periods of time without interruption. What Andrew is fantastic at is editing and putting these documentaries together with fantastic background information, he will often dive into the history of the area and shine a spotlight on what led to these issues. A great example of this is his documentaries San Francisco Streets and Philadelphia Streets. You can see that his influence is Louis Theroux who also does fantastic documentaries.
The fact he can sit and talk with someone like jack and gain there attention help them reform there life give them a space to talk is why andrew is a wonderful human being
oh they can. Why would they bring awareness to real issues and real people ? News corporations aren’t about good coverage. They’re about propaganda and exploitation
Your documentaries have done more to open my eyes and my heart to these subjects. Big ups to Andrew and crew and I pray God keeps yall safe on your continued work to shed light on the dark spaces
The progressive exposure of Jack's multiple layers, which humanize him so well, is artfully done. He was so heartfelt in talking about his son. This is beautiful work; Really next level Andrew.
@@kyleh6391 wage theft is the leading cause of theft in the US. if you really want to see people glorify crime talk to people that suck off the stock market.
The fucking evolution of this coverage was masterfully done, Andrew, no doubt you make Hunter proud. Your job as a journalist is to be the peoples eyes where they cannot see, not to intervene in situations you normally would, tho your humanity, and the amount that you care shines thru when you talk about these things openly with us and THAT, my friend, is a priceless image to capture. This was phenomenal, thank you for keeping it real in a world so fake!!
THANKS ANDREW!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks for capturing his humanity, I ve struggled my whole life with addiction and lost everything and everyone basically, it was real and thats what matters.
As a san franciscan who used to be homeless and addicted to drugs, it upsets me to see these people simultaneously say they do bippin because they have to but also gloat about all the nice things they have. It is 100% a choice to commit these crimes, and there is no excuses for it. You can go to CCSF for free and get money from Pell grant and Cal grant to pay your rent. That's what I did and it has turned my life around. Smoking fent and bippin is the easy way out, and its for suckers. It's false when people say there is no opportunity for jobs they just don't want to work. I know because I used to choose that life, but it almost killed me multiple times. You have to work for your own success or you leech off of others
Thanks for this comment. I know SF is trying it's best to rehabilitate lots of non-violent offenders, and it's reassuring to hear that there grants are available to those who need help paying rent/buying groceries. Sounds like a silver lining in a very dark cloud of crime following certain policy implementations.
I like how he’s going to a plan. Problem is he never makes it to the plan but it’s always there to give him something to explain his future to all the people he is failing in life including his own
The ending scene was one of the most humanizing things I’ve watched in a long time. You sitting for a meal with this man, unplanned, just two humans living different human experiences. Some how that part brought me to tears. I hope this fet crisis comes to an end.
Why would it? Anything short of a total overhaul of society, restructuring of resource/wealth distribution at a fundamental level, is going to fail to make the kind of large scale dramatic changes required to remove the factors that drive people towards abusing extremely potent intoxicants and keep them from escaping that lifestyle. People like to get fucked up, and I think ascribing moral value to a drug is a stupid thing some smart people taught us to believe. Tying certain specific emotions to specific drugs, drug use and users creates an automatic emotional reaction that immediately affects the capacity for rational thought on the issue. It's why certain words or terms or ideas immediately get people heated, basic propaganda tactic, but I'm going on a tangent. Point is, people have needs. There's the ones everyone knows like food, shelter, clothing, safety. But friendships, acceptance, a sense of purpose and a role within your community, love, physical and mental activity....these are all things everyone needs, with individuals needing more of one thing and less of another than someone else. And these are things that have been systematically dismantled, denying millions of people that most (allegedly) fundamental of rights that America is so fond of riding its own meat for having: the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. In place of these unmet needs we get all this shit to make people alright with their shitty, often hopeless circumstances, at least for the moment. And that's why people turn to drugs and sex and w.e. else, it's to fill the voids left from lacking so much of what every person needs to have. One thing I wished was touched on in this series is that addiction doesn't see class, race, sex, gender, whether or not you're a good person. The same inability to have our needs as humans met affects people of all socioeconomic factors. And people of all socioeconomic means turn to substances to fill in the missing pieces. Most addicts work full time normal jobs, and live mostly "normal" lives. Making more money makes supporting a cocaine, opioid, meth or even a weed habit much easier to maintain, and contrary to popular belief, jobs that pay more money aren't necessarily harder than the jobs worked by their coworkers for less. So that addiction isn't a guaranteed fast track to losing it all; just think how many alcoholics maintain a life where they ",have a job and contribute," the standard by which s person's morality is measured against, for some reason. Removing the association we've been taught to have between drugs, poverty, and morality is the only way to shift public opinion in the right direction. Nothing meaningful will get done until there isn't the huge reactionary pushback on progressive policies that will help everyone including the people against them. And for a lot of people, until they can see themselves in someone else's struggle, they will continue to wilfully refuse to acknowledge the existence of a reality outside of their own that calls into question the morality of a world that allows for the validity of both, as one can't exist without the other. Too many people hide from the reality of the world we share behind the idea that life is fundamentally fair, karmically balanced. Good people have good things happen, bad people eventually face cosmic justice with a punishment that fits the crime. So if your life is going poorly, you're impoverished, using drugs, doing crimes to support yourself, it's because you deserve it. Just like how the person with the multimillion dollar home, nice car, can afford to send their kids to the best schools, all that, they deserve it. And that's just an infantile and lazy worldview, like it's mighty convenient for those who got it good right now, which is why it's always the haves that preach this as divine truth.
Andrew, this content is needed and incredible! The depth you go to show the humanity and stories of people in horrible life situations is truly commendable. Hopefully Jack can get his life together and see his son again.
Really loved that you two ended with just enjoying a meal together. I really appreciate you working hard to see people as people, no matter their life choices.
That shot around 33:05 is wild - seeing Jack talk about his experience coming out of prison and being homeless while seeing a woman playing with a baby in the reflection of the window. It almost feels like foreshadowing for that baby - I hope it's not, for everyone.
absolutely. the cinematography prowess in this news channel is incredible. to me it showed a level of humans all being innocent from the get go and him talking about the rehab could be him getting back that level of innocent

Whole new level of respect for Andrew for documenting the nuances of this complex issue. No underlying agenda, just pure gonzo journalism presenting facts. As someone who lives 2 blocks from the 24th Street open-air market and two blocks from Capp Street, it's crazy to see the streets that I walk on every day getting attention. I barely notice it anymore, but I appreciate your willingness to dive deep and reveal what is going on. Cheers Andrew
The ending to this really hit me, with the two of you just hanging out eating together, and then the announcement that Jack had been locked up shortly after this was filmed. Would love to get some more updates on Jack, hopefully he can turn things around and be reunited with his son.
Well, hopefully they can become more wholesome skümbagz that their kids can be proud of. We need Jack in these skools on “Bring your Father to School Day”. I like the way that one of them tries to speak eloquently and educated, but then he starts talking about stealing others belongings and he cant help it but chimpin’ out like a real one. Real G ish. Ya know? No one should be blamed. And we should definitely downplay it, by comparing it to worse case scenarios . Thats what smart people do.
The bro saying a broken window means you're only out $200 bucks doesn't even own a car. Back in 2005, my car's window was broken while parked in an SF parking structure. They stole a freaking cooler bag of drinks and snacks, but the window alone cost me $1,000.00 bucks to replace. Nowadays, his quote of $200 doesn't even cover replacing my ceramic tints lmao..

All these people are human. It's so sad they don't have a normal life to live. People need to stay far away from big cities. It ruins people's lives and minds.

Another great vid. Would be good to see you follow up with Jack in the future. You're getting really good with this investigative reporting. The big point for me is you provide your perspective without sounding like your look down on the subjects. Is great. 👍
31:09 It’s amazing how Jack tells us an entire story about how to be successful in life and avoid hard times, and yet he follows the exact opposite path he describes. He knows how to do what is right, yet chooses not to. Hard to describe how that makes one feel. Thanks Andrew.
he's depressed that explains his self-sabotaging actions and drug addiction. it's sad but so common at the same time that I almost felt desensitized when he was explaining his depression and kinda choking up a bit but at the end, when I put his whole story together, it just left me with an emptiness that is also hard to describe
That's one of the many awful things about depression and addiction. You watch yourself slowly start getting impulses to do things you never thought you'd ever do, and your brain will come up with all sorts of ways to rationalize it while you argue with yourself knowing how bad the decisions you're making are, but it's like you're in the passenger seat. You just let it get worse and worse, and all you can do is watch as the way your brain thinks changes day by day.
26:08 can someone tell me what's up with the women and man in background with full camping packs on their backs? Homeless? Surprised they'd walk around with all that wealth?
That's advice for people of value and jack doesn't see himself as valuable. " If I wasn't destined to fail and disappoint everyone around me, I would..." Shame how much we doubt ourselves sometimes.
Did the old gray haired man on Morgan and Morgan die? I thought I heard that on my local news in Mobile Alabama a while back, but they said he had plenty of commercials filmed already so not to worry.
Man I have a heart for that man you followed around. I'll be praying for him! Let him know that.. let him know that you've got folks, or at least one (me) that will keep him in my and hopefully our prayers! I hope Jack is doing well!
Being from Vancouver and growing up in this kindof life, I'm very happy you chose to humanize Jack and just give it straight and factual. Like SF, Van has it hard with the rich getting richer and people who struggle barely keeping up or worse. Vancouver is truly a city in which its media's narrative is to vilify the people at the bottom, while making it seem like the city actually gives a damn about it other than the inconvenience of their own fantasy. It's sad, but at least you're show it for what it is. Thank you, and I definitely want to keep watching your content like this. Jack, you got this, bro.
He isn’t on the bottom, he’s a single able bodied guy who’s too lazy to work an honest job like driving a bus or plumbing. These junkies are ruining SF.

I don’t know what it is & I don’t know why…but I actually “kinda” like ol’ boy from the end of the video Jack. As always bro, you & ur video/editong/story telling capability managed to bring me with u into a segment where at the open, I would have stomped the breaks off that kid…humming a happy melody the whole time. Only to find myself at the end, with an entirely different perspective. Whether it was phony or not I wouldn’t pretend to be certain, but when Jack brings up his son, citing that having his time or access to him being blocked or limited as being one of the main or THE main cause for him having relapsed…the emotion and pain that instantly welled up in him and watching his immediate coping mechanism/self preservation system kicking in so he didn’t break down on the spot…actually made me cry. I was in this precise situation myself. Having my ability to spend time with my son, (anything outside of every other weekend & Weds from 4-6 mind you…), completely out of the question. Having his “new” dad tell me HE is the man in my sons life now and that, whether I like it or not, it is what it is; there’s nothing I can do about it and that when I separated from my sons mother I gave up my right to having that “fatherly role” in my sons life…& so much more along this despicable ilk… I found myself in such degree of depression and began escaping into a pharmaceutical bottle for the singular reprieve I could find to numb that pain. Luckily, I have a strong group around me & solid family who knew what I was going through, realized what was happening & were willing and able to step in before I fully self destructed. Thinking about Jack, missing his son, feeling helpless and turning to a substance out of desperation or for minute of unencumbered peace/contentment…that’s a circumstance that hits harder to me personally than any of the other docs or segments I’ve observed in all the videos I’ve watched on your channel. Honestly, the struggle some men/fathers are put thru as a result of a bitter ex or an unconcerned/unaware/easily manipulated family courts process is one of, (IMHO), the LEAST acknowledged/ LEAST addressed topics us men/fathers can be subjected to. (That sentence, all previous and all forthcoming are, of course not meaning to imply that this applies to ALL men or ALL situations or ALL states or ALL courts or ALLL of anything…rather, being applicable to ANY situation whereby a father is kept from being able to be there for his child due to circumstance/lies or any other variable out of his control…whereby the officiating legal body provides its unfair, undeserved, unjust and THOROUGHLY destructive power to the very person aiming to use their child as a pawn and a weapon of revenge for ill perceived slights during the TOXIC relationship wherein it was actually SHE who was to blame! 🤬). This scenario is most certainly the primary catalyst for untold numbers of men/fathers…who then find themselves seeking an escape via drugs or alcohol, creating a downward spiral before they realize what’s happening. I don’t imagine Jack will in fact see this message, but I genuinely wish I could speak to him and/or in some way convey to him, just how important it is that he know how much his son needs him and to show him, as a living embodiment of proof…that it WILL get better. That he WILL regain the relationship with his son if he finds the strength to pull himself up and out of the pain. He has to fight whatever is preventing him from being there with his son. I would sincerely appreciate if you were to provide any updates on this situation if/when you correspond with him in the future. Thank u for this video, amazing work as always, (& my sincere apologies for the long winded post.) 🤘
