In the United States, nearly 80 billion lotto tickets and scratch cards are sold every year. Overnight these winners find themselves in charge of an astronomical fortune and at the centre of the limelight.
David and Erica won 62 million dollars, becoming the richest in their county in a matter of seconds. Self-proclaimed “redneck millionaires”, they are determined not to let their newfound wealth to cut them off from reality. When 51-year-old nurse, Jack, won “Cash or Life”, he immediately quit his job and began spending frivolously.
The temptations for lottery winners are endless and the risks, elevated. A third of winners end up in ruins. So what makes this industry so attractive, and what do the lives of the winners actually look like?

Yes i find it funny that they spent half million on a pool and then dont just order some catering stress free but everyone to their own :). Most importantly that one also stays healthy and doesn't get lazy and sloppy with health and food etc. i don't want to be indiscrete here but Erica clearly got a bit more sloppy seeing old images and how she gained weight etc.

It's such a bad thing. Say goodbye to your normal life. In most other countries you can at least pretend nothing happened. The reason why especially American lottery winners fuck up so much is because of the lack of anonymity. In Europe, the death toll and bankruptcies among lottery winners are not even close to the rate in the US.
@kodek1234
@kodek1234 5 месяцев назад
That would never happen in Europe. I guess in the US everything has to be flash and in your face. I wonder what the legality of that is. If you refuse the website could you still legally be able to collect?

Having known people who've won (3 winners), 2 others winners that I was told by others committed suicide. There is alot of stress having that level of money come into your life all at once. There is alot of responsibility and planning with that money. The first thing you do is not tell anyone you don't trust, that's where those lottery corporations putting your face and name all over the news and internet is insane! If people win, plan on moving to another area and don't tell anyone. Cancel phone lines and have mail sent to new address, don't let anyone sell you on business ideas or plans that you're not familiar with.

What I find most surprising is that this guy is willing to come on international television and disclose where he lives, what car he drives, what he owns etc. It's like he doesn't have a sense of danger. In this day and age it's definitely not safe to disclose such private information publicly, especially if you own tens of millions of dollars. There are a lot of people out there who will do unimaginably gruesome things for a lot less than a million dollars. If I ever become rich, I will do whatever it takes to keep it as secretive as possible. I would even be hesitant to inform my own family about it, not because I don't trust them, but because there is always the possibility that they accidentally mention something about it in the wrong place at the wrong time, or to the wrong person. I've seen stories of people who got kidnapped and beaten to a pulp for just $100k in Bitcoin, while nobody except his closest friends and family knew about it. When there is a lot of money involved, you really can't trust anyone.

@@vigov2012 I agree. In Europe, especially in the countries of Eastern and Southern Europe, they do it in a slightly different way. If you have money, a good car, a big house, you're probably in no danger as long as you don't hang out with the wrong people. However, if you want to get rich and you open a local restaurant, bar, disco, or certainly a nightclub, people will immediately appear and tell you that they are your security guards and you have to pay them. If you don't do this, they will usually destroy or even burn down your place. This is how the local mafia works.

Money won = the principal The principal invested = capital returns from investments. Your personal income = a percentage of the total capital returns. Directly spending any of the original principal (winnings) regardless of the amount. Reveals why they probably had financial problems long before their winnings. Any people (Friends) that come to me looking for handouts. My reply… Give me a couple of months to get organized, as I’m absolutely going to be diversifying some of my assets. Including the possibility of new business investments. At that time, I will absolutely be looking for new low to mid-level associates.

Daniel dude's problem was absolutely not a "lack of financial advice". He wasted his money through drugs, partying, and thinking he was invincible. He got so high on drugs that he began to sell it as well. It's not that he was trading bad stocks, investing in the wrong real estate, and all of a sudden he went broke. He was 23 years old and had no self-control. That was the primary reason why he went nuts and lost everything. Yes, he didn't have good financial advice either, but that was a secondary or tertiary cause.

Thanks for sharing those stories! No doubt more people want a piece of the action. With ticket sales surging more rapidly, both the Powerball and the Mega Millions lottery jackpots are now reaching the $1 billion zones more frequently. My quest is to share 50% of the cash-value jackpot with many people, including a pledge to donate 10% to helping children with cancer. Somebody will win another staggering jackpot soon. Good luck to everybody! 🍀😀

It is better to win when you are in your mid-30s or older because by then you have more life experience and a fully developed brain. You are less likely to fall into the trap of drug addiction and partying and probably already have some stability in your life such as marriage, kids, a mortgage, a career. Lotto winners under age 25 should have to wait until their 25th birthday to claim the prize and everyone should be required to work with a financial advisor to ensure they are setting themselves up for long-term success. Young people too often make irresponsible financial decisions and dig themselves into debt or just blow the money. You would be surprised how much money you could waste just by going out for coffee and lunch and dinner everyday, and shopping for clothes and accessories.

Dave and Erica definitely smart about their lottery winnings. Sure, they spent some and upgraded their lifestyle somewhat, but it looks like they've put most of it into some low-risk investments to give them an annual income for the rest of their lives and aren't too out of control with their day-to-day spending (I don't think, though obviously we can't get a complete picture of their lives). They treated their children well enough from what I can see, hopefully they will be wise with the money when they inherit it.
