live on "going home" DVD
lyrics:
Some of them were dreamers
And some of them were fools
Who were making plans and thinking of the future
With the energy of the innocent
They were gathering the tools
They would need to make their journey back to nature
While the sand slipped through the opening
And their hands reached for the golden ring
With their hearts they turned to each others heart for refuge
In the troubled years that came before the deluge
Some of them new pleasure
And some of them knew pain
And for some of them it was only the moment that mattered
And on the brave and crazy wings of youth
They went flying around in the rain
And their feathers, once so fine, grew torn and tattered
And in the end they traded their tired wings
For the resignation that living brings
And exchanged loves bright and fragile glow
For the glitter and the rouge
And in the moment they were swept before the deluge
Now let the music keep our spirits high
And let the buildings keep our children dry
Let creation reveal its secrets by and by
By and by--
When the light thats lost within us reaches the sky
Some of them were angry
At the way the earth was abused
By the men who learned how to forge her beauty into power
And they struggled to protect her from them
Only to be confused
By the magnitude of her fury in the final hour
And when the sand was gone and the time arrived
In the naked dawn only a few survived
And in attempts to understand a thing so simple and so huge
Believed that they were meant to live after the deluge
Now let the music keep our spirits high
And let the buildings keep our children dry
Let creation reveal its secrets by and by
By and by--
When the light thats lost within us reaches the sky

In my opinion, Jackson Browne is one of the best song writers of a generation that had more than it's share of talented composers. I believe he writes from the most genuine part within himself. He creates quality, music which almost always includes an important message regarding an issue he feels strongly about or feels it's an issue that needs to be brought to light. He gives us beautiful music that also gives us a different perspective from which to look at different subject matter. Sometimes we wear blinders and don't realize we aren't seeing the different aspects of a situation. He helps us to remove those blinders and he does it with intelligence, thoughtfulness and beauty.

I had the pleasure of seeing him in October 2017, I was all of 20 meters from the stage, and it was WONDERFUL....enough said...I'll treasure that night until my dying day...What you wrote makes so much sense, good on you, my fellow Jackson-Browne fan!

This version of BTD is without a doubt the best version of this magnificent song by the most brilliant song writer of his time. Once my partner and I drove for two and a half days to get me to one of his concerts in Bend Oregon. It was the best concert I've ever attended. The audience was enthralled watching this man perform songs he's sung thousands of times but in that moment in time, on a hot summer night, it was if he was singing to each one of us. He touched our hearts in a way they few musicians can do. After all these years you can tell that he loves nothing more than getting up to perform his songs for his adoring fans. And on top of all this he's a dedicated environmentalist who helps many worthy causes and he does it in a quiet and low key way.

Simply flawless on every musical level. I'm having a really hard time right now and this is exactly what I needed to hear to get the tears out. The best part is at the end when the instruments fade and Jackson pleads, 'When the LIGHT that's lost within us' just gives me goosebumps. Simply put, this ladies and gentlemen, is how you make perfect music.

+Diane Dee So do I. We need to pay attention to what nature is telling us before we have gone beyond a point where we cannot repair the damage we are doing. We have taken the natural habitat of our wildlife away which in turn reduces the food they require to stay alive. I will stop there because I could go on forever about the suffering we place upon one of natures greatest gifts......Wildlife.

This whole setup/performance is just SUBLIME! :) Right from first hearing this song on Late For The Sky, when it was first released, I always thought that it had to do with the 'lost ideals/idealism' of the 'Woodstock Nation'. "Flying around in the rain", I always took as a DIRECT reference. ;) "Exchanged loves bright and fragile glow for the glitter and the rouge" although most likely is expressing the deeper, more substantial meanings usually attributed to these lyrics, I took to be the whole 'glam rock' era post Woodstock (which yes, could also be interpreted as very materialistic, self-centered, and vain). In any case a GREAT and EPIC song, and yeah MUCH MORE relevant now than when it was first written/released on the album.

Taken from Jackson's landmark TV special and DVD release called "Jackson Browne" Going Home"-some of the most subtle and nuanced performances of his long and storied career including this tune and a brief view of his first wife Phyllis Major and his son not long before her tragic death. The entire show/DVD is one of the best music videos I have ever seen, for sound quality as well as for the artist and song content. Also one of the best versions of "Lives in the Balance" ever recorded with Graham Nash and David Crosby!

What possesses a performer to look at a past work like this, and tear up the arrangement and start anew? In this case genius. The amazing and creative instrumentation supplements and enhances the song and its message, and never gets in the way. And by keeping a critical part of the past, Browne again reminds us tha tmusically, he and David Lindley are twin sons of different mothers.

A beautiful song I caught long ago on his Late For The Sky Album. As I was an undergad in geology and had an elequent, inspiring and award-winning prof who ended the term with an inspection of the new science of global warming, I recognized this song as more than mere song-writer's metaphor. It should , and I hope it does, become an Anthem for The Green New Deal.

The only thing George Harrison had to do with the song was the fact that Clapton was in love with his wife. "The song was inspired by Clapton's then unrequited love for Pattie Boyd, the wife of his friend and fellow musician George Harrison". "Harrison co-wrote and played guitar pseudonymously (as L'Angelo Misterioso) on Cream's "Badge" from Goodbye". With exception to the 1st sentence, all info provided by Wikipedia.
