I feel like I lived this song, and I am still not ready. I don’t think it is possible to be ready. But it is possible to be prepared. RIP David Lindley.
Some of them were dreamers And some of them were fools Who were making plans and thinking of the future With the energy of the innocent They were gathering the tools They would need to make their journey back to nature While the sand slipped through the opening And their hands reached for the golden ring With their hearts they turned to each other's hearts for refuge In the troubled years that came before the deluge Some of them knew pleasure And some of them knew pain And for some of them it was only the moment that mattered And on the brave and crazy wings of youth They went flying around in the rain And their feathers, once so fine, grew torn and tattered And in the end they traded their tired wings For the resignation that living brings And exchanged love's bright and fragile glow For the glitter and the rouge And in a moment they were swept before the deluge Let the music keep our spirits high Let the buildings keep our children dry Let creation reveal its secrets by and by, by and by When the light that's lost within us reaches the sky Some of them were angry At the way the earth was abused By the men who learned how to forge her beauty into power And they struggled to protect her from them Only to be confused By the magnitude of her fury in the final hour And when the sand was gone and the time arrived In the naked dawn only a few survived And in attempts to understand a thing so simple and so huge Believed that they were meant to live after the deluge Let the music keep our spirits high Let the buildings keep our children dry Let creation reveal it's secrets by and by, by and by When the light that's lost within us reaches the sky
"I think most people have an appetite for joy, you know for enjoyment, for love and for happiness...it's better to speak your mind. It's better to say what you feel about things and then go ahead, and have fun, you know, make a joyful sound ..." What's always drawn me to Jackson Browne's music I now realize after all these years is the simple honesty driving his worldview. He's a realist. Doesn't deny what's out there, but recognizes and puts it in context and the personal responsibility of standing up, speaking out, and letting go, moving forward into the choice for joy. Thank you!
Yes well said Browne knowing the power within to accept with courage strength and hope, that Joy is understanding truth. Which only costs sharing and listening to gain more of. In stark contrast to mass man consumerism, which promotes instant happy, which always has a price, that loses its shine once you get the bill. That saying the best things in life are free. Browne puts that saying into truth through song, and a resulting joyful noise to those who can hear. This current limbo of happy consumer hopelessness will be replaced with joy of understanding. By and by . .
Eric, Perry, beautiful words, thank you! Hallelujah! May we all hold hands and share these joyous truths! I recommend 'Holy Moments' by Matthew Kelly. If, as he was taught, you approach every person as if they were the Messiah (this is NOT strictly a Christian mess age by the way) you will change the world and yourself and the other person in a REVOLUTIONARY way. Just in one moment. And if you take the care to read the whole book and practice this over and over you will find that your soul grows more and more and more sensitive, able to hear God and hear the other person with wondrous clarity. Try it for a month. What do you have to lose? You have heaven itself, here, on earth, in this life, to gain. Eric, I have no doubt that you deal in fish.
I remember seeing Jackson in concert doing this song. While not a particularly religious person I had the overwhelming feeling that God, some higher power, had His hand on Jackson’s shoulder.
I just love Jackson ❤ what a great poet and composer. All though I always cry to this song I keep playing it over and over. David Lindley was a big part of the making of this song. May He rest in Peace ❤
Tom Petty had Mike Campbell, Springsteen had Miami Steve, helping them reach that distinctive sound.. Jackson has David Lindley.. so much great music. Thanks for sharing.
Jackson Browne one of the finest Songwriters in America today. Strong on awareness and strong on musicianship! They don't come much better he n his band are a touch of class,
Mr Dave, a true musical prodigy, who complemented and accentuated the beauty in Jackson's preternaturally insightful songs. RIP David Lindley, I hope you're harping away on those sweet strings in heaven.
and now, in 2023, we continue to believe that this is not really happening....I will be dead when things really get crazy, but I apologize to my children every day for the world we have left them...
Wow nice Jackson saved us a piece of history telling us about the youth of the 60s He is a master story teller giving us hope and reminded us of how we sometimes lose track of what is important. His art is timeless.
An important but simple message we all should heed - protect your children - make peace for their future. .They should be your only self-serving interest.
ricjan58. David Lindley was perfect for Jackson and brought out the best in him. A multitalented musician. Somewhere on YT , there is a description of how Lindley approached Jackson in a dressing room and asked if he could play something for him. Jackson was just blown away for how beautiful it was. What an opportunity and a gift for Jackson.
worth the price of admission every time I watch Mr Lindley... when I grow up that's what I want to do... play the most amazing music for J Browne... wouldn't be the first time a joyful sound indeed... he really wasn't a depressive type guy... San Diego County was... seminal.. he had an issue with the woman he had been living with... she heard this and promptly checked out early.. just to continue tripping him out.. or something... suicide is a permanent solution for a temporary problem as a general rule... he wanted her to be happy... and some folks just don't want to be happy... I am not one of those people... he wasn't either... take care of today and everything else takes care of itself .. 10,000 sunrises since then... definitely worth the price of admission then we remember >>> to boogie.. first thing in the morning... last thing at night.... boogie... everything else takes care of itself... Peace ✌☮ Starfirediamondmines@gmail.com don't think it won't happen just because it hasn't happened yet
My beloved Husband. RIP. Our favorite song. We played and sang this song Perfect! He's gone now 8 years. I miss him dearly.. I cannot get thru this song without 😢 we smoked this song
It's so special to have someone in your life for 50 years that you have never met. That's how i feel about Jackson, i was 16 when i heard his music. He's been a part of my life ever since. I know that's true for all of his fans. He truly feels like an old friend.
Written in the context of the anti-nuke movement of the 70s, saw him perform this at a number of those events. This is most evocative for me of the Seabrook non-occupation in 1978, and many other moments, really an anthem of that time. His music, and others, Pete Seeger's, etc., were such a connecting tissue among us all. Miss that now. How could something written 40 or 50 years ago be so relevant today?
+kgs42. I wouldn't be able to forget it either. Jackson has been promoting Warren's songs now for 43 - 44 years. What" a true friend " as Gregg Allman would sing. Gregg and Jackson also were true friends till the end of Gregg's life, when Gregg asked Jackson and only Jackson to sing with him on his last album knowing full well that he was dying.
I SHOULD have gotten into his limo after a concert at the Garden in 1984 when he asked me to. I had to work, she said! Big regret! Try to live with no regrets, people. Life is too short.
Some but saw the Sunshine.... Some but Knew the Rain..... While for Most of Many it was Meaning in Moment.... that Shattered. As in the Bold'n'Olden Rings of Youth.... they were Circling their Pain.... till their Wings once.... O so Fine.... no longer Mattered.... As the Sands.... Slipped through the Openings.... and with Fingers Stained by their Guilded Things.... They Reached Out for Return to their Broken Hearts in Refuge.... As Refracted Time was Torn into.... the Deluge.... Now Let Our Muse but Teach Our SpiritHighs..... Let Our Use Not Teach Our Children Lies.... Let Creation Reveal All Secrets....To Our Eyes.... As the Light that's Lost Within us.... Reaches the Skies....
Thanks TransatlanticMoments. I can't count how many times I have come back to this video. One reason is that this is the only version on YT that includes the lyrics "Rage On".The other reason is that it is only video having a one on one interview confrontation with Jackson Browne at the end of the song. No one seems to want to address it. This is that beautiful cocksure young man that took up for himself. And he was beautiful, young, and cocksure. There is nothing else like it on music YT.
There has never been anyone lyrically like Jackson Browne period. Adele became the female version in my eyes as far as her lyrics. But J.B. pulled your heart out of your chest. I am so grateful I have been around to hear this man's music!!!!
When I first heard this song I placed it along the side of such music as Bill Miller's Reservation Road and Wounded Knee tracks,. The deluge being foreign immigrants impact on the lives of native Americans. I'll always place it in that vein.I'm two years older than Jackson and heard this at the time of it's initial release RIP John C for introducing me to this man's music. Bob D UK
Cette mélodie me fait pleurer de nostalgies, elle me rappelle mes origines dans la source de toute chose. Elle ouvre mon cœur au fleuve de la vie une. Elle me rappelle également mon éternité. Une joie indescriptible inonde toue mon être. Ainsi, le OM primordial vivre en moi.
Hope he comes to Portland Maine again!! I remember the year he missed coming.. his mom was arrested at a no nukes Rally.. I believe he said ❤. Songs to make us think .. we were so lucky to have him! Best era.
For good reason, Jackson really trusts Lindley here. He lets him solo for over a minute from 3:18 to 4:19. He knows that whatever Lindley will do will benefit the song.
I just read those essays. She did something that seems extraordinarily difficult, but with such ostensible ease: she captured a transformative moment in American history using language that stands the test of time...like Jackson Browne does with his songs
many people may think Jacksons song are somber and dark....perhaps they are not LISTENING TO THE WORDS....He writes from his heart realistically with truth and passion....love you Jackson.... "Let the music keep our spirits high"
If you listen carefully to what Jackson says in that revealing interview at the end of this video, despite the fact that his wife had died just a few months ago a year earlier ( not sure of the dates that are provided) you will hear words and phrases that confirm the reason that he is considered a lyricist and a songwriter and maybe a poet. "You can't hide from sorrow". Jackson Browne.
"When the sand was gone and the time arrived… in the naked dawn only a few survived" seems to connect this album to his previous, For Everyman. Sand was his metaphor for life-time, and for opportunities slipping by. Listen to Colors of the Sun, and Our Lady of the Well.
Hello 👋 Leslie How're you doing, it's been a long journey, and I'm nothing without amazing fans like you who appreciate my musical craftiness, All love to you and yours ❤️
ancora invia un brivido giù la mia spina dorsale… che questa è che cosa il songwriting è interamente ricca… tale eleganza senza tempo e bella… grazia Jackson.
This needs to be shown to the good people of Iran, Israel and other countries that I pray do not suffer a real deluge. You are the "dreamers" - the warmakers are the "fools". Please protect your children - reach out to make peace.
Hello 👋 Rebecca How're you doing, it's been a long journey, and I'm nothing without amazing fans like you who appreciate my musical craftiness, All love to you and yours ❤️
TransatlanticMoments. If this was early 1977, it was at the very least 7-8 month's .after the death of his wife. To quote Jackson, "You can't hide from sorrow" , at the end of this piece.
Wished that the backing vocals could mirror the studio recording....absolutely love how the voices rise on the last verses....aside from that, great version of the song
Not just history, not just the 60's. A song for today, tomorrow. For those in Occupy, the marches on the RNC & DNC, homeless camps and emergency rooms, picketing the pipelines and standing firm against the slash cutters and mountain-top removers and food manipulaters; the one's that will take back our 1st Amendment and our democracy. They are building an ark, and they will survive.
