Ever since this song was released in 1973, I've felt like I've been standing with my ticket in my hand, waiting for everyman. Now, here I am at 73, still dreaming. But don't think too badly of one who's left holding sand! Jackson Browne is my lyrical hero!! ❤
Being a massive Jackson Browne fan since 1973 it is still relevant in my life now with my young brother coming up with pancreatic cancer this music is a must let the minute and hours show his mind strange new flowers please pray for him
Jackson Browne. This is an explanation of how to be a better person, simultaneously in a poetica and very literal sense. So, my poor old man, now departed for some years used to play these records for me during my childhood. He never said a word about it, he just put them on so that could hang out together, and that was our kind of time in church, where sitting on his couch in Upstate New York, Jackson Browne could explain his thoughts on ethics that were just a little too touchy feely for him to explain to me, but with which he agreed profoundly and wanted more than anything else for me to understand. Jesus Christ, and now, now that I can't pick up the phone and call someone anymore, when I'm working, and when I need to feel in connection with what is right I put on this music. God bless Jackson Browne.
I always cry when I listen to Jackson Browne. I graduated high school in '73 Jackson's songs have been the soundtrack to my life. So many memories love found love lost!
Bless the Story Tellers of this World. The ones with beautiful souls, observant eyes and sharp minds. Singing their songs are pure delight to the imagination of just about every man. 💕🕊️
The 2nd LP of Jackson Browne’s “Triple Crown” of 71-73 : “Jackson Browne”, “For Everyman”, and “Late for the Sky”... His finest songwriting period/work in my opinion! All three gems are Priceless and will stand the test of time!
@Timothy Orten I totally agree. The Civil Rights Movement, the anti-Vietnam War and all the other turbulence made for great songs and progress. It all made for the best time of my life. Given today's politics, the ending of democracy, Supreme Court that's turning back the clock to the 1950's makes these times the worst of my life.
I was going through heavy transitions at 16. This and many other songs helped me make sense of my situations and fed me ease, calmness, and seemed I was not alone. Jackson Brown, nearly every song I could relate to in one way or another. I'm 62 and still go back to all these lyrics, his and other similar writings. Thank you for sharing!
I found Jackson when I was 14. Now I'm 65, last October he was performing with James Taylor in San Francisco. It was magical, I told myself that when I died, my life would be complete!🎉
I too was about 14 When I first This Album. And Yes.. Very Well Written Emotional Powerful Lyrics and Superb Musicianship.. I had my 60th Birthday Yesterday. And Feeling Nostalgic Played For Everyman... A Brilliant Timeless Album Like All Good Music 🎶 I will never Tire Off.
There is a reason why For Everyman, Late For The Sky, The Pretender they are all listed on the 500 Greatest Albums of all time. It is rare for an artist to achieve the triple crown ❤
When I uploaded this "tune" I KNEW they HAD to be 1. They had to be-together. Just like Glad and Freedom Rider. they just BELONG together. I'm glad others feel the same way and noticed it. took a lil bit of editing but well Worth it. thank you all, thank you Jackson and band for wonderful memories of my teen years.
Saw ,Jackson browne in 1983, at theee, mighty spectrum, Was a big fan of Jackson browne, after the running on empty alblum. Then I listened to his early alblums, saturate before using, late for the sky, The pretender, running on empty, hold on hold out, For everyman I'm forgetting another early Jackson browne alblum, but his music and that 83 show, showed me, he hadda great band, anda really nice concert of his works thru the year ...Luv ,Jackson Browne with his great axman/ lap / peddle steel , David Lindsey's guitar work is just amazing with kunkels drumming, etc...thanx for the dl of these 2 songs ,that just blend in together ,so wonderful...
Thank you for sharing your gifts and talents with the world, Jackson 🙏🏼 My husband and I are in our 70's and share a lifelong love for you as a generous person, a beautiful soul, and the most moving and inspiring music on earth. It's very rare that a day passes without enjoying your songs 🤩
I was born in 1970 and my father listened to JB. As I got older he asked, "Why do you still listen to that". Honestly, ho could I not. He has sense passed.
Am I crazy or is that one of the finest songs ever written? You have to experience this studio recording with all of the instrumentation and vocal harmonies but for my money "Sing My Songs to Me/For Everyman" stands as my favorite song(s) ever, period! (for my 57 years of loving music). Let me know what you think. For the record "For EveryMan" should NEVER be heard without "Sing My Songs To Me" leading into it.
Jackson Browne is the right side of the brain thinking right. Every album produced ( for me) becomes a part of the journey. His Album "World In Motion," Speaking up about Nationalism freedom without Liberty and the world today that comes full circle to this song.
First heard on the radio from the college station WTUD a low power station at university of Dayton. Bought every album after. That fills like a million years ago. Getting ready to retire but Jackson Browne still keeps playing. One of the great artists of my lifetime.
This album, 461 Ocean Blvd, So Far from CSNY & Abbey Road were my 1st albums of my very own. My older siblings had all kinds of stuff but these were mine, all mine. ❤
My favorite two songs ever..period. I am 60 years old now and these 2 songs by this man have been listened to way too many times than I can remember. Jackson I have loved your music since my teen years. Only saw you once but I adore your music. I hope you are enjoying your days. You wrote some of the best music ever.
I only saw him once, and unfortunately it was in St. Louis in 1978. Very bad acoustics, and jerks kept yelling for him to sing “Ready or Not” even though he told them he wouldn’t sing it because it brought back painful memories about his wife who committed suicide. Love Jackson’s music and thank him for supporting Warren Zevon who I like as much or more than Jackson if that is possible.
Oh, gosh, I live in Japan now and would have loved to see him when he came here several weeks ago; bizarrely, the timing was terrible because I had to travel at almost exactly the same time to a conference in the States! I saw him at age 16, my first concert, and that's almost half a century ago! Sheesh. Gotta see ya at least one more time, Mr. Browne. You've inspired me and many others over these years.
As it's now 2018, I lost someone very close to me last year, but also reconnected with someone who I thought I would never see again. Life is so strange. I love life, I've struggled with life, the next day keeps me going. Who knows, what tommorow may bring. Peace, hold those you know close, and those you don't know extend your hand, he might be EVERYMAN.
This is a beautiful expose of Jackson brown’s focus at this point in his life. It’s wrapped in exquisite poetic verse and great musical accomplishment. It’s even better if that’s possible live which is what I had the pleasure to enjoy when he appeared in my home town.
I was in the balcony alone in the Albert Hall 4 years ago and he looked up as he left the stage at the interval, saw me and waved. Unforgettable like his great music, it is to treasure. Thank you for such great music.
After 36 years of hearing this song I still get chills and thrills from listening. Thanks for uploading. Thank you Jackson Browne for trying to help us all see.
Jackson Browne: Thanks for all the music 🎶 Jackson Browne... For Everyman ... Late For The Sky... Running On Empty... The Pretender... I’m Alive ... I don’t have a favorite... I guess whichever I’m playing at the time.... but.. I love them ALL!!! Many Thanks...🎵🎶
You forgot to mention Hold Out 🤭 But you are right as there is no single favourite album as ALL are madterpieces. But if i have to choose one on the pain of torture i would choose Late For The Sky❤
Bought this album eons ago . . . & these songs don't lose their great appeal, as true for the great artist who writes & performs them! A childhood friend introduced Jackson Browne's music to me, & his was my very first concert! --- exciting memories!!! 🎵🎶🎸🎚🔊
Sing my songs to me Sing them to me softly Sing me sunlight and shadows Orange groves and meadows Let your voice ring back my memories Sing my songs to me Bring my dreams to me Bring them from the darkness Let the minutes and hours Show my mind strange new flowers But I'd like to know where they go when the morning comes Bring my dreams to me Because it seems to me That there may never be A better chance to see who I am Come timelessly dancing Through my dreams to me Everybody I talk to is ready to leave With the light of the morning They've seen the end coming down Long enough to believe That they've heard their last warning Standing alone Each has his own ticket in his hand And as the evening descends I sit thinking 'bout Everyman Seems like I've always been Looking for some other place To get it together Where with a few of my friends I could give up the race And maybe find something better But all my fine dreams Well though out schemes To gain the motherland Have all eventually come down To waiting for Everyman Waiting here for Everyman Make it on your own if you think you can If you see somewhere to go I understand Waiting here for Everyman Don't ask me if he'll show -- baby I don't know Make it on your own if you think you can Somewhere later on you'll have to take a stand Then you're going to need a hand Everybody's just waiting to hear from the one Who can give them the answers And lead them back to that place In the warmth of the sun Where sweet childhood still dances Who'll come along And hold out that strong And gentle father's hand? Long ago I heard someone say Something 'bout Everyman Waiting here for Everyman Make it on your own if you think you can If you see somewhere to go I understand I'm not trying to tell you That I've seen the plan Turn and walk away if you think I am But don't think too badly Of one who's left holding sand He's just another dreamer, Dreaming 'bout Everyman
This was the very first Jackson LP I ever bought, and when I went to get it on order someone else had been in and bought the damn thing!!! It was the girl who was, is, and always will be my best friend, my wife. She still giggles about that. JB = genius.
Listened to it yesterday, again, and every song is brilliant, My wife's fav is "Sing my songs to me". Sadly we last saw him in Bristol three years ago....damn it.
Played Tuesday December 11, 2018 in memory of my dearly beloved wife, Lori, a beautiful woman and the love of my life. I'll see you on the other side sweetie. April 7, 1962 - December 7, 2018
Jackson has said he's an album guy - This brilliant song fits into an equally brilliant album. Listen to the whole album. For Everyman, the album, is epic.
Awesome! All of his tunes bring out emotions in me, my wife thinks his songs are depressing, She has a point, he does bring out some sad truths, but it's those Truths that give his sad emotional songs that erie hopefulness.
+William Hatten HeHe My Ex said the same to me. We grew up up loving him together but later in life she said the same to me. I really couldn't argue with her, only to say, yeah, but there is a time and a place where this music feels good.
+William Hatten & +djclay33: I felt exactly the same way when I first listened to his music in college. I remember making a joke to my roommate (who also loved/loves JB) about JB sounding so blue that he must have someone who kicks him in the balls right before he records or performs..."Yeah," we both agreed, "He hires a professional ball-kicker." It went on: " 'Hey, who are you...?' " " 'Me...I'm Jackson Browne's personal ball-kicker!' " (I'll stop there. We were 22, and thought that was hilarious.) I realize now, at 58, that JB's music does touch very tender places -- he's not afraid to lean right into heartache -- and some folks just aren't ready to go there. For seem reason, though, I think we men find his music an accessible, male-user-friendly way to welcome our own usually-hidden emotions up to the surface. Women have their own favorite artists for that, but JB, in particular, seems to elicit trust and respect from men, in this regard.
I understand why your wife says / feels that way. Somebody I cared for said the same thing in trying to slam me as wallowing in the negative, and I said, " Are you threatened by the accuracy and the depth of how truthful his words are ? What are you afraid of ? " He shut his mouth. That's JB's poetry : deep, accurate, human truth. And you can dance to a whole lot of it ( Fountain of Sorrow, just for a perfect example).
They very tasty guitar solo David Lindley performs at the end of Sing My Songs to Me and then carries over throughout For Everyman is one of my all time favorites. A clinic in understatement, and how to play as a tasteful sideman. One of the major influences on my own guitar playing. And that is not even considering the lead work on acoustic guitars he does all over the record.
I watched the Netflix documentary on David Geffen and the 5 second song clip of this song got me hooked. Listened to it in the car this morning and was really vibing with it.
Absolutely Magnificent Songwriting and Artistry. This Stuff WILL Stand the test of Time. Should our heads and ears not grow to be ignorant and numb. The King will soon be gone...... Long Live the King 🙂 JB
So true and meaningful even today. Let me tell you a little story of how wrong one can be. That one, of course is me. I met Jackson in the most unusual of circumstances, just prior, minutes or possibly an hour before he left for the studio to record this. It was 1973, a great time in history. I am originally from Michigan but I hitchhiked out to California and ended up living about 4 doors down from Jacksons mother in La Habra, Cal. and many days would sit out on my patio and listen to someone playing the piano down in the house. The house had large glass sliding doors and the piano was on the patio just outside the house. One day while I sat listening to this "someone" play this song Everyman and it sounded pretty good so I thought to myself I'm going to go down to that house and let them know that I could hear them all the way up to my house. I didn't mind it but the neighborhood we were in was kind of quiet and I wanted them to know that the sound was really traveling. Anyway to make a long story short, I went down a path that ran behind our houses and walked up to a fenced house with a gate. Soon Jackson saw me and come out to the gate and opened it. Then motioned for me to come in the yard. I introduced myself and he did the same and we started talking. Heck back at that time everyone was somehow hucked to music and playing in a band. I myself was about ready to begin my first year at CalState. I told Jackson about my situation and he said that his mother was trying to get him to go to school there also. He said but I've got a better idea. So I asked what his idea was and he said he was just going to play his music with his band and they would do ok. I just kind of joked with him and said, "Do you know how many people think they are going to do the same thing, and most of them fail." Then Jackson said something so profound. He just kind of chucked and looked at me and said, "Failing is not an option." Then he grabbed a jacket and kind of gave me the idea he had to go. So I left and it then took about 2 moths before I started hearing him being played on the radiio stations.
Terry Pearo i absolutely love that story. I "stole" this album from my dad when i was a kid and literally would not give it back. It was one of the most amazing albums, like poetry...i fell in love. i was born in 81 and i still listen and feel the same way i did when i first discovered it as a kid. Thank you so much for sharing your story!
@@stacichurchill3352 Oh Staci you were born within a window of time that Music was still great. I'm a musicholic and have spent alot of time even working with some of these guys. Did a bit of Roadie work for the Eagles & Linda Ronstadt back during those days and got a chance to hang with some of them. Amazing... You know Jackson wrote several of the Eagles songs. They were all just Regular People ... well sort of. I spent a lot of years in Southern California and I got to say Jackson was/is one of the neatest individuals you can ever meet. Although today I just heard he tested Positive for this damn Corona Virus. Praying for him and all others that may have challenges ahead with their health. Good hearing from you. Take care... and you Keep on, keeping on!!
@@terrypearo4992 thank you so much for your reply! You really made my day...I'm also a huge musicholic as well. As long as I have music in my world, I can handle just about anything. I was crushed to hear about Jackson getting sick and have been praying a lot lately myself. I grew up on Jackson Brown, the Eagles, John Denver, James Taylor, Pink Floyd, oh my gosh, so many greats...amazing music, beautiful lyrics. Sometimes I feel like I was born in the wrong time...I'm sure you have some amazing stories. If you ever feel like sharing, I'm a sponge for everything music! Thanks again! Stay well!
A song sequence that everytime I listen takes me back to a time in Southern California before Freeways, huge malls and overcrowding... when life was slower, sweeter and more mellow... a time of orange groves that go on for miles, old Spanish style houses, horses and cattle on the hillsides and warm sunshine...
I was going through heavy transitions at 16. This and many other songs helped me make sense of my situations and fed me ease, calmness, and seemed I was not alone. Jackson Brown, nearly every song I could
These 2 songs hooked me forever. Saw him do it at Berkeley Community Theater with Bonnie in early '70s. "I'm just another dreamer, dreamin bout Everyman". Ominous drum roll.
Yep, you are humorous! Research "Wiki" describes David's Occupations as: Musician, songwriter, producer, Music scorer" He not ONLY play guitar, but also plays the following: "Instruments: Acoustic and electric guitar, upright and electric bass guitar, banjo, oud, mandolin, lap steel guitar, hardingfele, bouzouki, cittern, bağlama, cumbus, charango, cümbüş, ud, violin, weissenborn, zither" Regardless, got to LOVE him! Cheers!
"For Everyman" has been my travelling anthem since 1986. Always reminds me of great adventures as a young man when you owned the world but didn't realise it.
*Santa Barbara Bowl Spring of 74, JB on stage with wet hair, bare feet and a No🚫Exxon T-shirt. Great company in the powerful Sunshine, overlooking the Pacific, what a day it was!*
The Pretender, Running On Empty, and The Hold Out ............ are another triple crown ......... just for the record........ I mean R O E as a live lp???
