At 11:17 he's slowly increasing the reference tone pitch from 427hz to 450hz ( you can hear it if you skip 11:50 and then go back to 11:17, that 'bass tone' you mentioned ). Some say is too mathematical ( it is ) but to me it adds another dimension to the song, and it's just fun. The cool thing about Jacob, is he uses so many genres of music as you mentioned. It only gets more interesting the more you dig in. For a true mixture of funk, r&b and african gnawa, I'd recommend 'Everlasting Motion'.
@captainmorgan1978
@captainmorgan1978 4 года назад
Wow, thanks for that little nugget about the tone pitch change...crazy. So far he hasn't lost me as too mathematical or "out there." Everything ,as I said in the reaction, is just enough push without losing the essence of the song! Cheers!

@Sondhead1 yeah, Take 6 got too high in pitch with the "wa wa" melody going downwards. That threw off the whole performance :( also the voices couldn't blend well in that arrangement. I don't know why, but it makes me... 🤗
@captainmorgan1978
@captainmorgan1978 4 года назад
Thanks for the comment. Definitely don't agree that he is too good for Take 6. I already spoke about that video in my other Jacob vid. So, go watch that one! lol I would say, in that particular video JACOB didn't sound good either,lol As I have said a few times, he is NOT a good singer, in my opinion...he isn't bad, but he definitely isn't used to singing with OTHER people, he mostly sings harmony with his recorded self. In that video, specifically, they didn't practice much at all together before the performance and the harmonies are definitely different and more challenging. Also, Take 6 is pretty old and ALL singers who have been doing their careers for 30+ years are going to degrade over time in the things they can pull off...early Take 6 has no match. As you can see in other videos I have linked to them. Now, Jacob's arranging is definitely pushing the boundaries past what Take 6 did/does. I mentioned that in my reactions to him as well. I've listened to Dream theatre before, they do not even scratch the surface of what Jacob Collier does in his music. They are fantastic, don't get me wrong. But Jacob Collier is in the same stratosphere with Beethoven, Bach, and Mozart. He will be talked about in Music classes hundreds of years from now. We are lucky to be living in the same generation as him.
@captainmorgan1978
@captainmorgan1978 4 года назад
Kinda comparing apples and oranges but wouldn't disagree with the fact Jacob is unique/genius...I guarantee, instrument wise, he couldn't do the things DT does...and to reverse it when it comes to composition, not really applicable as you have 2 melodic note instruments, plus 1 voice in the composition in a traditional band so composition is completely limited. At best you could compose a triad in weird structures, which Avant guard jazz does at time...they don't have the multi tracking voices/vids with a harmonizer doing most of the work...Jacobs genius is in his composition which could be more compared to a Take 6 or something with an orchestra...not to DT and the like! Cheers!

I have loved groups like Free Design, Modern Folk Quartet, The Swingle Singers, Manhattan Transfer, Take 6, and Pentatonics. I have loved groups like Yes, Dream Theater, Radio Head and the Beatles. But Jacob Collier is on a whole other astral plane. How can one person be to the piano what Petrucci is to the guitar and at the same time put together arrangements like All Night Long and Moon River? Much less pull off Moon River technically, singing all the parts? He is the Mozart of this century. If he flames out and never does another thing from here on out it won't matter to me. There is no such thing as 'too technical' lol jazz or even prog is all about technical mastery. It's what seperates them from other genres.
@captainmorgan1978
@captainmorgan1978 4 года назад
I wouldn't agree with that. Of course there is going to be subjectiveness as to where that line is for each person, but playing 2000bpm's is a separate technical skill than the skill of writing a "pleasing" song. I would agree that the technical skill of playing an instrument is the only "non-subjective" part of music...either someone can play it or not, ohysically. But a song is much more than just physical ability. This is the beauty of art and music. It is comprised of both physical ability as well as emotional/connected ability. It is also why some of the smartest people in the world who know all the "facts of something" are terrible teachers lol Teaching is not about what you know only, but how to apply that "knowing." physical ability with applicable ability." :)

@@captainmorgan1978 I mean when u say Mike Mangini plays robotic or he has no 'feel' is just someone's opinion. None of us have seen a robot 'play' any musical instruments before so what does that term mean anyway. I have observed those who act the showman on stage usually are applauded as having 'feel' regardless of whether their accurately playing it or not whereas someone else who doesn't feel the need to act showy on stage but plays just as well is deemed a robot. PS. not judging anyone and Mike Mangini is just an example among countless other musicians and singers alike. I mentioned him cause you had in a previous video.
@captainmorgan1978

@@nikelodeon6852 right, I agreed in my original response that "feel" or groove is subjective and will vary but that doesn't mean that it is not a part of "technique" or doesn't exist. Npr's tiny desk concert is one of the most special concerts Jacob has done. It's really nice to find new (jazz) bands/artists and show better known artists in another light in those concerts. Please leave it alone, we need that channel for the big audience to embrace other genres, other than pop and dance music. It's really important these channels exist for us musicians to have the bigger audience have a vision in other music, music out of their comfortzone. To show them a little of the other world that is unknown to them but known to musicians.

I would suggest “Hallelujah” (500 MILLION views on RU-vid), “Daft Punk” (they won their first Grammy for this! They recorded the piece in a closet, did the video in the kitchen and it all was done for $400! And they won a Grammy!), Run To You” an original, “Cant Help Falling In Love” (this was done in a slow 4 instead of 6/8 which adds poignancy to the song. The original bass, Avi Kaplan, is a basso profundo, and on the last chord, the group sings an A9; on that chord Avi sings a 3rd ledger-line bass clef A! That chord sounds like an organ due to the overtones. Avi is the bass vocalist on these recommendations. Avi had to leave the group because of extreme stress. The new bass singer is Matt Sallee-very fine, but he has a more lyric quality; Avi’s voice is a dramatic, powerful bass. Also, there are a number of compilations. After you check these out, you will be ready to go down the PTX rabbit hole. Good luck! You’ll be amazed!

I think the comments about being too mathematical are SO BS. Music is not a set in stone definition. That's why several genres of music exist, and why different techniques have evolved throughout eras of music (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, etc.). He's adding dimensions people years ago wouldn't even THINK about, but also because technology didn't really allow it at the time. He's adding so many more dimensions to music, and it's so creative. I don't think he does this for the technicality or the math. He does this because of what he FEELS. If you watch his interviews and such, he loves to see what can he add before it becomes too much (for him), and he sings and progresses based on how he feels. For example, in Hideaway, Collier doesn't consider D 432 and D 440 as those specific hertz (although he does tag on the definitions). He sings D 432 because it sounds darker to him and he wants to open up to 440 to make it sound brighter. He's so creative, and he's adding several things to the music world. Us music majors are better having listened to this man. Not angry at all, just love this man and we have to protect him at all costs lol.

Who was saying the mathmatic part, I see most people saying the opposite? The same comments are made sometimes towards my favorite band, that they are just trying to be technical etc... I would disagree of course but there is such a thing as "losing the song" so I think finding that balance is important as well. So far for me, Jacob has definitely done that well pushing the boundaries but keep the nature in tact.

Very impressive, but a bit too show offy to my taste. But when it comes to this kind of production, have you heard Gavin Harrison's Drum song? It's worth to check out as you're a dr... playing drums, too.

Check out the All night long one I did a few weeks ago..really good I think!... Are you talking about Anesthetize drum video? Seen many of Gavin's vids..he is awesome!

@@captainmorgan1978 Nope, I'm talking about a song, which Gavin made entirely with drums and cymbals, in the way that this vocal song is made. Here's the link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KX2CaX1jwHs.html Hint: This could make a good reaction video!

Way late to this. Perhaps get some original material? Reaction videos are cheap.

Glad you made it! :) Original material? What exactly do you mean? I have a few videos that are original material on here, but no one watches them...lol Ex 1: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-td80Q8If8cg.html Ex 2: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0VTuBx7LHdM.html
