Jacob deGrom Nearly Pitched The Greatest Season Ever

It’s really tough not seeing Jake in a Mets uniform he was my favorite starter on the team back in 2015 by far and watching his ascent to being the best pitcher in the league was awesome. I hope he can have some good seasons with the Rangers but injuries seem to just plague him lately.

Jake was a gem for the Mets. It sucks he never finished as a Met. I think his injury problems was why the mets didn’t keep him

Saw him at Citi Field for his first home start last season. I must say, he’s one of the best athletes I’ve ever seen play live. Utterly dominant.

i was at that game! 15 strikeouts and degrom got two hits. even though the stadium was about 20% capacity, the place was electric. very grateful to have seen one of the greatest pitching performances of recent years

I can say i grew into baseball watching and idolizing degrom and it kills me that hes no longer a met. Even if the injuries make sense for the mets looking the other way, i wish him the best and i know he’ll have a return to form sooner or later.

Was forwarded here after commenting on the SRS Todd Frazier video, very good video, though one thing was missing, it has to be more so talked about how deGrom also had an insanely good season on the batting end along with the insane pitching. He had a .500BAbip in 2021. It would be interesting to see a part two of this that focused on the batting and how insane this could've been as an overall season. Anyways, LGM, let's see what the future holds for this team!

Great video. It's such a shame he's run into health issues like this. Who knows what kind of numbers he would have pulled off. Easily a HOF talent but won't get in. I don't think a lot of fans realize how ridiculously dominant deGROM was for those few seasons. It was so tough watching as a Met fan and holding your breath every single pitch he would throw

Can we stop comparing degrom 2021 to Gibson 1968. Nothing against degrom, great pitcher and I felt terrible for him that he couldn’t stay healthy for the rest of the season and 2022. But Gibson was never taken out of a game in 1968, 34 starts, 28 complete games/ 13 shutouts. And he was pinch hit for the rest of the time. A 1.12 era in over 300 innings. Degrom was 1.08 in 92 innings and he didn’t pitch after early July. They are not the same. Once again not hating on degrom, or acting like a boomer, but the facts are the facts

Im a rangers fan who only started following baseball literally the day after he was Injured. Never got to see him play.

It's pretty silly to say he "nearly" pitched the best season ever when he had 92 IP. Obviously, he was great, but the actual greatest season candidates pitched more than twice as many innings. It's also incredibly unlikely he would have been able to maintain his pace for the rest of the season. In Pedro's 2000 season in which he set the ERA+ and WHIP records, he had an ERA of 0.99 in his first 91 IP. deGrom's 1.08 ERA may qualify as the best in a player's first 15 starts, but Pedro's was better in the same number of innings, he just needed 12 starts to reach that IP total instead of 15. It's hard to find mid-season ERA+ numbers from the past, but given the offensive environment (2000 was the highest scoring season in the past century), his ERA+ at that point would have logically surpassed deGrom's 373. Pedro fell off a bit in his remaining 125 IP, but he actually had another 125 IP unlike deGrom and still finished the single season record for ERA+ and WHIP. deGrom didn't "nearly" do anything. He had a good first half, but in the end his season ended up fairly comparable in ERA and IP to some of the great closer seasons of all time, nowhere near the greatest Starting Pitcher seasons.

In the end, de Grom's greatness will always be remembered as a Met because there's no way he is doing in Texas what he ever did in New York. de Grom at his best was insane and this is coming from someone who saw Doc in the early years and knows full well about Seaver. Glad I watched it in person and as a fan.

DeGrom is a goat level pitcher when he's not injured all the time. But we should also remember that he's hella old.

It makes sense that he would still be improving because if I remember correctly he didn’t start pitching til college. He played shortstop til he was a sophomore or junior in college

2:41 just to clarify, tunneling means throwing the pitches in the same trajectory most of the way to the plate, and then having them diverge at the last second. jomboy has some great overlays of degroms fastballs and sliders looking identical until 10 ft from the plate, and then zooming in opposite directions. tunneling DOESNT mean releasing everything from the same armslot, though that's important too

The difference is that Gibson had a 1.12 ERA and pitched over 300 innings. No way deGrom or any other pitcher will ever pitch 300 innings in a season, let alone have a 1.12 ERA.

I would argue that there's one other factor was staying on the field or showing durability and that's toughness. It's not like a guy such as Nolan Ryan never got hurt, he had a higher pain threshold that he would play through. I'm in my 30s so by no means is this supposed to be an "Old man get off my lawn" speech. It does seem like players/teams are much more willing to put a guy on the aisle or rest them for a minor injury, then they were in decades past. I'm sure they can detect more with modern science and teams are more willing to look at the long-term plan But I just find it hard to believe that previous generations weren't getting hurt as much as guys now.

Unreal that after the Mets winning the NL Pennant in 2015, the Mets no longer have Degrom -Harvey - Noah - Wheeler - Matz after the 2022 season. Those starting pitchers were supposed to create something special in the future for the Mets. Mets made wildcard game and lost it in 2016, and then that was it in terms of postseason appearances, until the 2022 season. And also, I just never imagined that Degrom would have become the best pitcher out of all those Mets pitchers, mainly since Degrom was an infielder before being converted to a pitcher

I probably watched almost every pitch he threw from 2017-2022. Same with Kershaw at his prime. It kind of spoils you. This is Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel - everyone else starts to look like a house painter.

Wait, you're talking about it like he threw three games or had a perfect preseason and then was out. He made 15 starts, threw 92 innings. Why does every pitchers performance have to lead the league in ERA, stirkeouts, games started, saves, innings pitched, most positive comments by your father in law, etc. to be considered great?

All I gotta say now is that the baseball world better watch tf out for DeGrom, he joined the Rangers for a ring to be scorned for it, but now the naysayers get to watch him return to a team who won it all WITHOUT him. DeGrom is going to add 10-15 wins to their record by himself next year, and more rings are likely in their future.

The problem is, Major League Baseball didn't start in 1947. It started in the 1860s/70s. I realize segregation was bulls***, but that doesn't erase the accomplishments of those who played before '47, which just happens to be when some of baseball's most elite flamethrowers took the mound. If you're going to say "greatest season ever", it should be just that -- the greatest season *ever*.

There are plenty of historic seasons that exceed deGrom for multiple reasons. 1. Gibson 68 2. Kofax 63-66 3. Carlton 72 4. Maddux 94, 95 5. Martinez 97, 99, 00 6. Gooden 85

In 1985 Dwight Gooden was more dominant than Degrom's best season. Gooden went 24-4, 1.53 ERA, 268 SO, winning the pitching triple crown and with 16 CG. The game has changed but Degrom unfortunately could never pitch beyond the 7th inning consistently and be dominant. His ERA would balloon if forced to pitch more innings.

deGrom is a GREAT pitcher... unfortunately he is made from glass. He breaks too easily. Rangers will be lucky to get 3 full seasons out of the 5 year deal they signed him to

1.08 with 92 innings pitched. Can't really compare that to Gibson. Gibsons first 11 starts he was 4-5, 97.2 IP with a 1.66 ERA with back to back starts going 12 and 11 innings those starts. He didn't step on the gas until mid season.

You CAN'T throw 100 multiple times every start and survive a full season, the body simply will not hold up.

Headlines like this are just annoying. Comparing guys who almost never pitch to a batter more than twice per outing to guys who regular go deep into games is just disingenuous.

Yankee fan here. Degrom had the greatest pitching run I’ve seen since Pedro. He was ridiculous. Sad he’s not retiring a Met but they never gave him run support.

He's definitely one of the best to do it but his injuries and age aren't worth what he got paid. Hell, hes hurt again already.

deGrom was great when he was out there, no question about that. But consider that he only pitched 92 innings in 15 games; that's only 6.1 innings per start. I don't like comparing his ERA, pitching when he knew he had a short leash, against guys who were expected to go 8 or 9 innings and conserved energy. Also, deGrom's increased four-seamer velocity and his recent spate of injuries doesn't seem like a coincidence at all. Why should anyone feel surprised that a guy throwing six innings and throwing as hard as Aroldis Chapman got hurt? So yeah, he was amazing on the mound, but he had an unsustainable pitching style. From my perspective, it isn't that he was having the greatest season ever and then he unfortunately got hurt. He was pushing his body beyond its limits, making his stats in the short run good, but making him due for injury.

He throws too hard man….he’s 35 and throwing 100…what do you think is gonna happen? He’s throwing so hard his arm and shoulder are literally coming apart slowly….he needs to dial it back to 96-98 and 89-90….

I've seen Halladay, Kershaw, Verlander, Scherzer, P Martinez, and Bumgarner play at their peaks. I'd take DeGrom over any of them. Never seen a more unhittable pitcher, just wish he had more opportunities to pitch in October

This dude is Greg Maddux with a 102 mph fastball and 90 + changeup...injuries suck...imo he is an anomaly and someone who can't be compared to...no one has ever seen this
