@@noryd As a Dodger fan living in CT I still tune in to watch DeGrom starts. He's just a must watch TV when he pitches the same way Pedro was in 99-00, and the way Kershaw was from '14-'16

@@noryd May the baseball gods bless all the ligaments I'm still kind of sad that Kershaw's best season - 2016 - was cut short by the back injury which started his "decline" from the best pitcher in the world at the time now to maybe "only" a top 15ish starter. In May 2016 Kersh had more CGSOs (3) than walks allowed (2) As a baseball fan I really really hope DeGrom keeps this up a few more years and lock in his status as a HoFer

Degrom is the greatest but Dwight gooden is my all time favorite to watch but only 84&85

Don't forget that his release point is the same for every pitch, making it incredibly hard to recognize anything. Its so easy for him to tunnel because of that

He also threw an 85 mph curve for a painted corner strike. From the same angle and release as his 100 mph fastball!

Mechanics. The dude is BRIGHT! He figured it out, and his motion is so easy. He can also repeat the motion exactly. His long arms and legs are also part of that. The Mets broadcast has done some overlay comparisons of his motion on different pitches - it's like one guy throwing but the ball goes to different spots, that's another factor making him so nasty. If he wants to do it he could be a very good pitching coach, but we Mets fans hope that's quite a few years down the road...

@@user-ry6cb2vr2p Not t really because throwing 100+ is routine to degrom. So comparing his routine fastball to a routine 3 pointer and a routine touchdown catch is completely justified. Baseball has always been the hardest sport to master, why do you think there are 3 minor league subsections of it where you can still be payed professionally? To make it to the mlb is way more impressive than the nba or nfl just because of the skill it takes to climb the rankings of the minor leagues and stay at the top once you’re there.

Good point by everyone. I think most "major" sports are technically difficult but far different and the success depends somewhat on body type, focused training, heart, mechanix, and raw athleticism. DeGrom gifted athlete, but could he transition easily to sport rock climbing or mountaineering ? Maybe , maybe not or Muay Thai ....

And clearly with mechanics and changing his leverage. Didn’t come out bigger or Barry Bonds forehead. And my god you never know what pitch is coming everything looks the same in his delivery. That’s pure dedication to form and mechanical improvement. Man is a beast.

Actually, both Dickey and Thole had been gone for two years when deGrom came up in 2014. The 2014 Mets came closer to 500 than they had in years, and the next year they had their miraculous WS run and then made the Wild Card in ‘16. The point is that he hardly came up with the Mets at their worst. ‘17, ‘18 and ‘20 were atrocious, though.

@@ladistar Mostly injuries in '17 and '18. 2019 was a big step up, but the ending was disappointing as they just missed the playoffs after an incredible run. 2020 was just disappointing. It was a team that should have dominated the division but just didn't come together. This year has been much better so far, so hopefully, that keeps up!

Story of his career

Most people know nowadays that wins are a totally meaningless stat. Shouldn't affect his HoF candidacy or anything. I will admit that voters have been a little inconsistent about prioritizing wins however. Felix Hernandez and Degrom both deservedly won cy youngs despite lackluster win totals but Rick Porcello won a Cy Young in the same time period based pretty much entirely on wins. Verlander had a much better year that year in every metric besides wins and still lost. But by the time Degrom is eligible voters should have completely smartened up by then.

It used to be that SP needed close to 300 wins to be considered for the HOF, but no one will ever get close again. Pretty sure they’re gonna use awards and stats like war to get him in the HOF

Well he’s already past 70 and this whole meme of no run support, though based in truth, is actually not as bad as people think. Since 2019, they’ve done a much better job with run support. Something like 4.5 runs in his games since.
