Jaguar E Type OTS 60 years unmolested original condition, reference car for serious restoration.
Many details are explained and pointed out. Of course there are many many more details to these cars which were built and developed on the road. Hence, many parts from the 1st car in 1961 have been continuously improved and replaced. To learn what is different between all these cars and how to restore to most possible authenticity it is important to be aware of all the different details.
I am living these cars and know then inside out. Have restored several as I like to drive and see them on the road.
The Jaguar E Type, is a car that can easily be driving in todays traffic and the thumbs up will reward you for showing them on the road as often as possible.

Awesome video. At some point during the production process at the factory there was a paint touchup process under the hood and I almost always see touchup paint applied to the Bonnet Locating Bracket BD19917 and Linread bolts as well as the attachment points from the engine subframe to the bulkhead and also on the picture frame near the top shock absorber bolt. My theory is that these areas were used to hold the parts as they were painted.Sometimes the can of touchup was thrown in the trunk and some cars still have them.

Dear RMO, you see, I noted that as well but had no explanation for it. It was odd as everything is original, and from 61/62 cars I know the Linread bolt as well as the brackets are cad. plated. You encountered that es well and have an idea. I have not understood so far why that is, At what point in time did Jaguar install the engine from the top? As from then on all bolt and nuts on the picture frame were painted. Your idea of touch up, with the paint and the tin in the trunk might be a very good explanation for this odd occurrence. Many thanks for bringing up this point.

@@JaguarEType I have read that the engine subframes were painted then fitted to the engine, so the whole engine/subframe assembly was installed together.

They didn’t have mirrors form the factory .. that tall it mirror on the bonnet is aftermarket ..and those tail pipes turned down are not factory .. there’s a few bits on this car that are not 100 correct , that fuel cap is not original .. 100% I’d put my money on it. Few other bits in the engine bay not original

Good day @carsandstuff365, You are right, but that are all things that happen to a car over 60 years. It certainly went through some different stages of glory but was generally only kept running and never been apart. Forgive this beauty a few changes, as an evidence of use.

Interesting examination. My 1966 4.2 had fluted cam covers. Perhaps not original?

What a car? Love it! You mentioned cleaning the seats and the chrome, ehat aout the rest?How would you go about cleaning the dust and grime? Dry ice? I would not dare washing the car

Many thanks, I was hoping it help some others for their restoration to get things right. What I find interesting is the vinyl above where the hinge is mounted. That must be a change or add on between February and May 63. The chrome stripe was on that edge already. I like to see the slowly but steady changes/improvements.

Maikel . Your knowledge of these cars is palpable . So when did your love of these cars start ? Our Aunt would not let is buy our late uncles ' 62 drop head , with hardtop in 1972 for £500 ! She sold it for £200 . I have a photo of it in our lounge with Arthur standing proudly by his new "e"type in 1962 . As a 9year old l clearly remember Uncle Arthur taking me out for a spin in his gleaming white roadster with the top down . Of we went with me standing on the seat and holding on to the top screen frame while Arthur gleefully showing how quickly the Jaguar could accelerate up to 100 mph ! Halcyon days ! Thankyou Maikel.

John, many thanks for your feedback. It makes me smile to bring back some memories to people like you who had contact with the E Type when they were new. And you still have that picture at the wall. That tells a lot. When I was a child I only had the the Lesney matchbox E Type. Took me many many years to own my first real E Type. But love never ended. 500 for an E Type might have been a lot those days. Even 250 £ maybe, but in retrospective, it might still hurt. I say it is always better to keep an E Type, otherwise you might regret. 😏

Another very interesting and well presented video! Curious about the side light lenses. I have just bought a June '64 OTS 3.8 with both lenses having the horizontal lines only . So maYbe the factory charge was later.

Hello Meikel, you are clearly an expert. I have a 1967 S1 which is BRG, which was previously stripped of its interior, so I am re-installing it. I am struggling to understand which interior colour choices were available at the time. I understand that Jaguar used Connolly Vaumol leather, as did Aston and RR, but I can’t find colour references (other than “tan” or “beige”) in the range. I was watching Jay Leno’s most recent video, on his ‘barn find’ 1963 S1, which seems to show an original interior in OCHRE VM3104 (I have a set of sample swatches beside me!). I wonder if you are able to confirm if this is a correct original colour? Many thanks

Good day and many thanks for watching. Somewhere in the mamy books are tables where you can find the available colour ombinations but you could also have tour special request as optional. However, a quick search on the Internet came up with this site. axleaddict.com/cars/Jaguar-E-Type-Original-Colors For your original colour, have a look at your Heritage Certificate. If this does not help, I will have look through my books.

Thank you for the review. I'm curious if the seat belts were manufactured by Ray Brown? The webbing pattern and color, and the chrome clasp, look very similar to what was in my 1957 MGA which was highly-original when I found it. Appreciate your time and sharing your extensive knowledge.

Hi Kurt, thank you for your comment, on the 3.8 E Type the seats belts were an optional and I think Jaguar only supplied BRITAX seat belts. But there were other after market such as your Ray Brown, HICKOK or KANGOL. I hope Ron will answer your question as to what brand these belts are. Some of them also branded their seat belt buckles with a JAGUAR. Keep watching and subscribe.

Fantastic video. Were the Talbot Berlins original on early models? Also, is there a proper position for the mounting of them, with regards to bonnet vs door? Is one more correct than the other or a matter of preference?

Good day, these are original Talbot mirrors, I have seen others with a black green logo, which might be a later product. Jaguar had no mirrors from factory before 67 and then they were mounted to the door. The bonnet option was probably the easiest was of installation. The visibility on the bonnet option is really limited. Better at the doors, some also had them on the bulkhead. It was a workshop decision up to 67.

Maikel great stuff as usual my grease nipples on the top front wishbones pointing towards the front of the car. Those grease nipples were pointing to the back? I’ve been trying to buy the brown plastic band round the brake servo. I have one which is broken still haven’t been able to locate one to purchase any ideas. Thank you for showing these great videos.

Good day Carl, thanks for watching, the grease nipples are pointing toward the front in driving direction. The plastic straps are dated, have never seen them for sale individually. Sometimes they are left on the master cylinders. Keep searching.

Yes it is, in most cases they have been parked with an issue. (often minor) that probably saved them for being so original.

In 1977 overnight thieves broke into my E Type Jag, They must have had some sort of key as they left the windshield wipers were up, meaning the thieves didn't know they had to press the starter button! So all they stole was my tool bag behind the seat!

I have a 1 1/2 Roadster. '67. Opalescent silver gray. Navy interior. Had it since '83. Drove it till '94 every day. Everything is stock.

Thank you for another great video and sharing more knowledge. I am currently assembling my 1962 FHC which has been sadly neglected over the years. I am wondering whether there is some sort of seal supposed to be fitted between the fuel tank sumpand the hole in the boot floor it pertudes through. If not what stops the boot filling up with water from spray from the rear wheels? I realise that most people don't drive their E Types if there is any rain forecast! thanks Hugh

Hugh, yes of course there is a kind of sponge ring. More to prevent exhaust fume getting into the cabin. Especially for the FHC.

Totally reminds me of the red 63 I bought in 1974 as a neglected an abused car for $900. Fixed it up ( not restored by any stretch) and drove it to college. But, I got to drive the heck out of it without a care. Back then it was just a used British sports car.
