I rented a car at Hertz, Stockholm-Arlanda airport, over the weekend for abt. 83 GBP. They had reserved a Volvo for me. But I had spotted a XE V6 S on the parking and asked if I could have that one instead - and that was ok, for abt. 30 GBP surcharge. Would you believe it? Ok, the catch is I am a Gold Customer with 40+ rents per year - so I guess I am entitled to some treats now and then... :) That was the most staggering car I've ever driven - what a joy. No rest that weekend - rather out on the roads clocking up miles in this amazing car with a smile on my lips. I'll let my BMW 5er go next time - it'll be the XE. Congrats to Jag!
Just give us the manual gearbox option and I will happily let go of my BMWs. The F-type is already available with a manual, so should this XE. Jaguar is THE brand right now !
Marloes Band Please do your research. I do know that the Diesel version is available with a manual box, but I'm not complaining about that. I'm complaining about the Petrol engines not being paired to a manual box.
Good luck with the repair cost if not you the second owner will. BMW 3 Series are extremely reliable and easier to fix not to mention everything else they've been the benchmark for
Jose A Its kind of different places to places, in Singapore we have a fucked up AD selling Beemers with lights and parts that breaks down every now and then, and charge you whoppers, the suspension of my 328i sounds broken after 5 years of cruising on motorways, the right beams have broken down twice. My friend swapped a 523i (he might have been unlucky) for an Audi (can you believe it) after 3 years. That said, BMWs are extremely comfortable and joyous to drive than most competitors, particularly the previous gen jag xf is not a good competitor at all.
I am in love... On looks and sound alone the XE thrashes the competition. Can't wait for it to come to the US. In a couple years I'll have a Manual XE-S in BRG thank you. Some day I will own an F-Type as a weekend car, but until then I will "make do" with an XE. Thank you Jaguar.
I simply enjoy having this car in my rearview mirror. It's got such a beautiful front. Had one follow me for like 100km on my last Sweden holiday on one of these insanely boring swedish highways and just loved looking back :D
am i the only one who thinks the 3 series gets waaaay too much praise? yes its the sportiest compact executive sedan, but not everyone wants such an aggressive set up. in lower trims, its not super quick either and the ride is not stellar. I like the new c class the best out of the group. the only way to "dethrone" the 3 series is to stop pretending like it the best fricking car in the world. dont get me wrong, they are great cars and fun to drive, but its not the leader in anything besides handling.
***** They are good cars, but the rabbid fanboys put me right off them. Witness some of the retarded comments right here "3 Series will always be king!" "The Germans have nothing to fear!" etc. Fucking moronic.
***** Well, this XE is not anything special, but then again, it is more special than a 3 series. The BMW 3 series has always aged terribly. The new ones after a year, look like they are 15 years old. I used to be a BMW fan boy, but in my opinion, they somehow lost it. I would take any Jaguar over any BMW. I would take a KIA/Hyundai over a VW. There is no such thing as German engineering. Everyone makes a good automobile, some just do not want to admit it and simply take the normal route, done. Why don't you speak your mind? This car here is something else, it does not look like it is made out of cheap plastic, it looks modern, stylish and grown up. The current 3 series is the cheapest looking of its class, looks flimsy and has that weird beak.
Finally someone who agrees. I also think BMW have started to cut corners in its quality department. My parents have BMWs. An X3 and an X5. And I was surprised to find that they are not as perfect as everyone says they are (as a BMW, not as a particular model). First, the interior quality. They say they use "real wood". But it seems very, very plastic. And there are open wires in the engine bay (Audi, Volvo and, indeed, Jaguar, they have hidden all their wiring as it should be). Also, my mate, who works at an anti-corrosion treatment garage said that one day they received an order for 25 brand new X5s, as they already had bits rusting off. Another industry insider told me that BMW only treat 50% of their car bodies with anti-corrosive paint. All that just to save up costs to make some ridiculous cars (like the hideous 2-series Active Tourer, financially ineffective 5-series GT, X4, 4-series Gran Coupe (why bother adding rear doors to a car in which even a BMW dealer admitted he could not fit in (he was 5'8" (170 cm) tall). Just leave it as a coupe). So not only the 3-series is overrated. The whole damn company is overrated.
My wife and me have decided, we go for a JAG XE Prestige , although I (we) never really looked at JAG as a potential buy , with XE that all changed , my wife immediately fell in love with it I needed a little more time , the budget we are planing to spend for a new car fits almost in , so we decided not to rush AUDI ,MERCEDES ,VW where all in plan but once I had the chance to get close and personal with the JAG XE Prestige , I told to my wife ..IF you want , that's it! we dont have to look any further ...she agreed and decision is made .
One can make little reference to the X type. The X type and S type was a period of asset stripping and under investment by three then owners Ford. Most parts were from the parts bin. The XE is designed from scratch from the wheels up, the chassis, the suspension and new engine.
I have never cared about the Jaguar but the last few years I am starting to fall in love with them. It started with XJ, XF then F-type and XE, the new XF and I am sure this is only the beginning. I cannot describe how bad I want the XE. Right this one V6 in red with black leather interior and panoramatic roof. The same story with Land rover. Congratulations Brits :)
***** Are you effin kidding us ? the M3/M4 would slain the audi rs4/rs5 ! its the best car its segment for going fast around the track ! maybe the new c63 amg is fast in a straight line but i doubt it will out handle the m3 and post a better time around the track ! audi are not in the competion at all these days ! maybe the b9 generation will bring them back in this amazing race ;)
***** i agree with all you said bud ! but i still prefer the e90 compared to the f30 ! i hope the LCI f30 corrrects all the bugs but im still waiting for the next gen in 2018 i think that one will hit the sweet spot since BMW said they want to get back that sporty feel they had in the past that everyone loved ! i thought you were a Die Hard bmw fan like me loll didnt know you owned a mercedes ! the new merc looks damn good tho!
***** true they are not what they used to be. Thats why im keeping my e90 and updating to the f30. Well wait for the b9 audi later this year to compare because the b8 is kinda outdated and the bmw e90 feels better in handling and road feel than the b8. But the s3 and rs3 are pretty good cars and so is the m235i. Audi is a good competitor but in this particular segment its behind. But in other segment its superior like with the a7
Cracking vid gents. Jaguar really on a roll now. So good to see them on top form. Can't wait for the R version. Also if they really want to hurt audi mercedesdenz bmw sales get a coupe and drop top out. Keep up the good work.
Really liked the video, but I haven't seen anything about interior space, or dashboard or that kind of stuff, while I would have loved to see that being reviewed since it's a brand new model!
Good review, though when talking about the MKII you showed a clip of the original S-type. Different headlight "eyelids", rear similar to the MKX with IRS. Great car.
Oh I think you could done a little more detailed test. You see, people buying this class of car also look at practicality, safety and those things you get from german rivals by default high. My only downfall for Jaguar is engine range. Competition has a lot more to offer. Everything else so far looks really promising.
I, like many others here in the comments have been having a hard time trying to find the song that plays at 3:25 . I've tried googling the lyrics with no luck. Would be great if someone from XCar could help us out since the artist is not credited. How are they supposed to promote their music if these steps aren't taken?
The problem with the XE is the level of cosmetic changes you can do when selecting a smaller engine. You can get an M-Sport BMW 3-Series with a flashy estoril blue paint job and still be rolling with a 316d engine...you can't do this with the XE. If you select a small engine with the XE, the car looks BORING! Because you can't have a nice body kit and other cool design options. I don't think the Germans need to fear anything...
True that. And this one might get popular in the UK but I still think the A4 and 3-series will still sell better around the globe. I love my 320d, it's still a rather fun car to drive even though it only got one of the smaller diesel engines BMW put in production.
***** ..Did you even bother to do any research on what you just said? Because that's completely and utterly wrong. You CAN get an "R-Sport" package on the lower trim XE cars. Check the facts next time instead of just blatantly fabricating false information.
Really like the look of this car & the only changes I'd make are wheels/tyres & maybe bigger brakes. 0-60MPH is 4.9! That's plenty quick! Second gen M3's were slower!
I actually don't think the interior looks dated at all; I think the minimalist overall design is wonderful compared to the exceptionally cluttered German rivals (especially the Audis). It is indeed more simple and we have this culture now of more going on is better but I can almost guarantee the interior of the XE will look less dated in 15 years than the competition. Simplicity isn't always a bad thing. Also give us the name of that bloody song!
I remember someone I know buying an ex jag some years ago and had a Ford Taurus drive train. Good thing Tata Motors saved the jag brand by purchasing it from Ford.
10 minute video about the most important car for jaguar and no interior footage. I ended up searching for another video so I'd see what the interior is like
Looks like a great car, hopefully will make the X-Type a distant memory, and with the 3 series ceding the small sports car throne, this could be a massive success!! Here's hoping!
Eki Rasevic They were already designing cars such as the XF and XK (150). Both of those cars came out in 2007, 1 year before they were bought by Tata motors - meaning that those cars would've been in development as early as 2004.
Nice review Alex, maybe alittle bit of bias showing, but i think you hit the nail on the head with how good looking it is...now.... the R/RS will be outstanding (if it happens of course) will you be getting hold of one?
i have never been a fan of smaller luxury cars TBH. the XE is probably the only car that i genuinely find appealing in this segment. the new C class is beautiful and there are a lot of design elements borrowed from the S class which i find appealing, however to me it looks "cute" no matter how low you're going to lower/tint it lol. and the BMW 3 series has always looked like an angry little bird since day 1... it might look better in certain colors but to me it's a no.
Currently drive an E90 335i and love it to bits. Wasn't quite so enamoured with the F30 3 series, but still a great car. I always worried that I wouldn't be able to find a car I like as much as my 335i when it comes to replacing it, but I actually think the XE-S will fit right in there. My only criticism is that I think it would have looked better with a narrower grill, but Jaguar have got everything right with this. It looks great and is a direct contender to the 335i. Also it's great that there is now an affordable Jag. I hope this new direction brings a lot of new business in for Jaguar and the UK economy. God knows we need it haha. It's really quite scary just how 3 series this car is, and that's a good thing.
I like the front, but the rear... Not only does it remind me of an Audi but also something like a Kia Optima or Citroen C5... I think it's mainly due to the lights and the flared top of the boot lid.
No other words can tell you how much I love this fucking car! British all the way, Jaguar! Over the passed few years Jaguar have really come out of there shell and stopped making old person smoking Jackets. They have got back to their roots creating cars that make you feel alive, and a car that you see and immediately want. As Xcar say, the XK, the XF and the F-Type are all great cars but this is what it has been leading to, a crescendo of all their cars, a car the average guy/girl can buy and experience the emotion, thrill and excitement a Jaguar should give you.
Great review. I was surprised to hear the XF called 'large' and the XJ a land barge. I own an XJL and have used the XF's as a loaner whilst getting service done. I found the XF to be cozy up front and a little small in the back. Of course i'm 6 ft tall, but that's not giant sized, is it?
Does anybody else thinks '90s Honda Accord when you see the tail lights, or is it just me? Don't get me wrong, it's a gorgeous car, but i can't unsee it. Just like an i8 pooping out a 911, i see my dads old '97 Accord in the XE back side.
Would have been more appropriate to review the base standard XE model rather than the top of the range XE model if this is a car that the masses can afford, just saying. Also would like to see in the future Jaguar do a model that competes with a BMW 1 series, maybe the XA?
The Jag badge alone has sooooo muuuccchhh more swag than BMW, mercedes, etc. some poeple say this blandly styled... ok... so the three series looks exciting? i didnt think not.
Jaguar have created the new benchmark in luxury sports cars, they are the newly crowned Ultimate Driving Machine!! BMW, Mercedes and Audi have to settle for second best...
Which is "better"this or the 2015 XF? What about the old xf vs the 2016 version. I want to buy I new car, but I don't know if I should get the old XF, wait for the new XF or just get the XE.
I bet the aftermarket will add back those pops, cracks, and bangs in the exhaust. My question is if Jaguar has improved their quality and perceived quality enough to make owning one something that isn't crazy. And where will they price it relative to the BMW.
