Jaguar XJR (X308) review - In this week's video I get behind this 2001 Jag XJR. It's safe to say that it's 4-litre supercharged V8 took my breath away and overall I was impressed by how well this car drove despite its age and size. Thanks for watching, please remember to like comment and subscribe for more regular car content!

At 5:46 you can see how tight the rear seat is. The car's low roofline requires that the narrator scrunch his head downward. Leg room is similarly compromised. Jaguar built a long-wheelbase supercharged version, ultra rare at only 248 units for the world market, called the Vanden Plas Supercharged. If you come across a low mileage version, grab it! I had one but foolishly sold it and have never forgiven myself.

I'm restoring my 01 XJR at the moment. I think these cars are worth saving as they will become a future classic. My car is on 135k with full Jag history and was on second generation tensioners as were all 01 models. I opted to change them anyway and i'm glad i did because the main guides had cracked and the tensioners had hairline cracks in them. But by listening to it you would never know, that's the problem with the 2nd generation tensioners because you cant tell if they require changing. They don't rattle at start up due to being spring loaded. It's a real issue on these cars.
@hamishmacbeth4292
@hamishmacbeth4292 4 года назад
Yes I agree, they are definitely worth restoring. I have just finished restoring my 2000 XJR Supercharged completed drive train, rebuild all powder coated brakes, re-rubber bushed with original Jaguar bushes, don’t use the super flex or any after market stuff, if your thinking of redoing yours, as it alters the geometry to much and you will lose that real XJR driving experience, people say to stay away from those engines with the nikosil liners, don’t worry if you have, as long as you don’t use cheap low octane fuel you get from a supermarket maybe, usually shell optimax, okay a little more expensive but worth it to keep the engine running good and keep to regular servicing and you will have a classic that will survive these new car rules we’re all heading towards
@cactusthomas914
@cactusthomas914 4 года назад
@@hamishmacbeth4292 Absolutely agree. Keep it oem all the way. Most Nikasil engines have survived the high sulphur fuels that were around in the nineties and nowdays if they are still running then they actually make a better bet than the later cast iron motors. Good to see someone else appreciating these cars. People are always commenting on the car because it stands out amongst this modern "sameness" of cars.

I'm restoring my 01 xj8 (after that's done its family heirloom time), a bit cost prohibitive at first tackling all the differed maintenance of previous owners but as a first car its amazing. On the highways here in VA this car hardly wants to speed a perfect cruiser without using cruise control. Don't be mistaken if I really want it to move it has more than enough power to do it. I've managed to get about 27mpg out of it turning 1700rpm at about 60mph in 5th

I got to drive a few XKRs from a similar period to this back in the early 2000s and I hated the supercharger whine. It was because of that and that it's an auto-only I bought an E39 M5. I still may have one of these anyway.

We didn't get the Vanden Plas in the UK. We had Daimler instead. Jaguar didn't use the Daimler name in the US as it was thought that the brand would be confused Daimler trucks (as in Daimler Benz).

My 1998 XJR has 175,000 miles on it. I put 40,000 miles on it in the last 3 years. It has been quite reliable except for the many, many coolant hoses that have needed replacement. Many are hard to reach especially the firewall hoses and the "valley" hoses between the V-8. Effortless performance is an excellent description of this gangsta car (mine is black on black with tinted windows). My car is also rust free thanks to it spending its entire life in San Diego, Calif. or within a few minutes of SD. It's life is short. Starting to smoke and there is increased crankcase pressure due to it needing new piston rings (or possibly Nikasil degradation). Probably won't pass "smog" test (California's only MOT test) next year.

they are great cars, I have had two of these since 2006 as weekend toys, they pull like you wouldn't believe, I had a good go with a 5.0l mustang on the motorway a few years back, coming out of a 50mph roadworks, we both floored it and all the way to 135mph the xjr are was creeping ahead of it all the way to the point he pulled back in behind me, I could almost hear the national anthem when he accepted defeat

Please have a look at the bleed pipes coming out of your header tank. They should cross over. The pipe that runs down the inner wing is to the over flow tank and should fit on the higher port on the degas tank. When they're the wrong way around it can seem like a head gasket issue as the coolant goes straight from the engine into the overflow tank.

Hey! nice to see that you like the X308. I would like to say though, in the defense of the car... I'm 6'3 and if I put my seat down at almost its lowest and back a decent amout, that I dont have any head room issues! Maybe you should put the seet back a little bit, your arms are quite bended, and where I live, we find that quite dangerous. Enjoy!

Absolutely, do it. I bought my X300 about 15 months back. Best car I’ve had. It’s a ‘base’ XJ6, but with a big options list. I use it daily & it’s been 100% reliable. Best bit - i only paid £500 for it. I’ve invested a bit into bringing it back from a few years of neglect, but it gives a very special feeling. It’s such a nice place to spend a few hours behind the wheel.

"£2400 supercharged xjrs don’t exist unless there full of rust !" - I've just checked the MOT status on the DVLA site. It failed massively on rust. Will probably need £2k-£4k to fix it. Worth it IMO as good ones aren't cheap now but still, you need to have the £3k-£4k in cash to do it !

I’m the owner of the car in the video. It has now gone to the scrap heap in the sky. Why? Well, I had a £700 bill to get it through the MOT which I agreed to pay, and this included a fair bit of welding (surprise surprise). However, once the welder got into it it was worse than previously expected and it was apparent that the car was likely to require maybe £2k spent on it just to keep the corrosion at bay. Trouble is, the car was already tatty with 180k on the engine and the bodywork was getting pretty ropey, all in a car worth probably £3k on a good day. Other things waiting to suck up money were knackered cats, and the whole exhaust system basically. I had to make a call on it. Basically the corrosion was too much to make it worth saving the car which is a shame as I was spending a grand a year plus to keep it on the road but the car was just too far gone for the money I’d need to put into it. Corrosion really is the Achilles heel of the x308. Maybe I’ll get another one day but I’ve moved onto a Maserati Quattroporte V so that is keeling my wallet ‘busy’!

Such a shame so many people have that "run it til it dies" mentality with these old xj's I paid 3k for a very nice 64k miles xj6 & about another 1k on preventative replacment of hoses, gaskets, seals & keeping on top of maintainence before things go wrong.bodywork is spotless and it never goes on wet roads. It's unfortunate people people abuse these amazing cars like they are driving an old Vauxhall Corsa.😢

I know where you are coming from, but I think a lot of cars of this type go through a few years where they are just cheap, old, fun cars to smoke about in for a bit. I reckon these Jags have gone through that period and that any left are likely to be looked after a bit more moving forward. Saab 9-5 Aeros are another example of this. Sounds like you've got a nice one! I'd be lying if I said I wasn't tempted to get one, but sadly I need ULEZ compliance :(
