In this video we assemble the XK150 chassis including the control arms, uprights, steering rack, leaf springs, rear differential. We also visit Jetstream Custom Auto to check up on the bodywork and take a look at some kits from Coventry Auto Components.

Thank you so much for the excellent explanations of not only WHAT things are,but Why the are designed the way they are. I’ve owned lots of XK’s, my favorite being a 140 Roadster with Type C Heads. I’m glad the beautiful Coupes are now getting the respect that they have long deserved. You are doing a beautiful job on the restoration. Keep it up and Thank You from Carlsbad, California.

Really enjoying this series Richard; great job as usual 👏👏. Found it interesting to go from the first look of the car where a cursory glance would have had me thinking; "That looks good, no work required here!", to the closer examination, dismantling and restoration. Hi Richard ever thought of using a mossses dip to eat all the rust away? 9 parts water to 1 part molasses. Let in brew for a week and then it’s good to go. Typically the dip will remove every skerric of rust in 2-3 weeks. Only problem is you need a big tank of it for large jobs (like a chassis) and you need (after rinsing with water) , to treat it with a phosphoric acid product. In Australia we have ‘metal prep’ which leaves the metal with a cleaned bronze like appearance. You ought to try it one day with some rusty object you want cleaned. Essentially the iron oxide is eaten by bacteria that live in the dip! Best wishes John

Hi Richard, just coming back to your old videos as I am doing the same steps on my XKs Thanks so much for this profound documentation. Is the XK150 finished yet and handed over? Can't wit to see the grand final. One remark to the paint: An acquaintance and fellow car fiddler, restorer of many XKs was befriended with Lofty England, who lived in Austria not far from here, after he left being fed up with British Leyland management. He asked him on what paint they used on chassis. He said, black satin. But it was not consistent. They ordered paint in large tanks and sprayed what ever ran out of the tub. So I guess you got it quite period correct. Chris
@RichardMichaelOwen
@RichardMichaelOwen 2 года назад
Chris, shiny black on everything. The only deviations I find are components painted by outside manufacturers such as the AC air filter housing which was satin.

Great stuff Richard. It' s a no brainer painting the chassis and suspension components. So many choose powder coating 😨😨😨. Wow ! Jason really got on with the shell. I guess there was a time lapse between the sand blasted view and the painted view. The overall condition of this car is fabulous. Poor Dave at classic car cave would murder to have his 150 in this condition and the 140FHC that l restored 25years ago was terrible ! Oh and did l see a certain "e"type in the closing sequence! Thanks Richard . Take care . Nice snippet of Chopin.

jag was never affraid to pile the lead in , thats how they got such nice sweeping lines. I doubt he will use lead to replace the old stuff as modern fillers works so well. plus some of the paint companies won't guarantee their products over lead as some people don't clean the flux off properly.
@RichardMichaelOwen

You're right the lead had to be removed from the bottom of the headlight pod and modern fillers put in.

All the concurrent specialist work is moving this along nicely. i do empathize with the owner who will be under this car with a toothbrush and degreaser after every outing. These restorations can go downhill fast if they aren't constantly detailed back to pristine.

This chassis oiling, could easily be replaced with the 9 or 12 lbs low expanding polyurethane foam. This would strengthen and seal permanently the steel frame and of course quiet the ride....The 9 or 12 pound is also known as closed cell and totally repels water for its life time...protected and with steel frame to adjhere to as long as the frame is set wiring pass throughs intact the foam actually adds a good bit of security

So much easier to mount the engine and gearbox onto a rolling chassis, then lower the body into place. Getting the long assembly of gearbox attached to engine (as in manual) into that narrow engine bay risks damage.

To "pretty up" the chassis too much would detract from "originality". Jaguar took the pragmatic approach to the parts that were out of sight, made well/strong, not always pretty, but pretty in the areas where it counts the most, that beautiful curvy body.

A most commendable and laudable job .However it is clearly evident from our views of the most intimate and intricate nooks and crannies of the skeleton of the chassis, that there was little pride in the accurate abutting and the quality of the welding to the frame and its range of bracketry and' luggery ,' during fabrication 60+years ago.To be frank, it is nasty, tacky looking workmanship ,which when exposed in all its nakedness, is an affront to the purist's eye .Those who have restored a Phantom 11 (not 3),or Bentley Mk V1 chassis in preparation for original or recreated bespoke coachwork for show purposes , as this XK150 is purportedly destined ,will know the cruciality of having a frame, hidden from the discerning eye though it may be ,which matches the beauty of an externally finished creation of impeccable appearance : A gilded silk purse sitting upon a somewhat pocked porcine ear ? Bristol ,AC, early post war Alvis ,and Mercedes 300 Adenauer chassis, to name but four, did not fall into this fiscally dictated practice. , As has often been opined on the products of Bill Lyons, since the Blackpool days of the Swallow bodies on the Austin 7 chassis, vehicles were built down to a price, and inevitably the aspects of build which were not readily visible were the first components to suffer .His cars were not acceptable to the British vintage fraternity until quite recently for this reason. I cannot help but feel that here was a unique chance to cosmetically enhance the underpinnings of this undoubtedly beautiful looking car ,and potentially commensurate with its eventual impeccable coachwork. However I was impressed by the injection of rust preventative into the box sections ,a procedure I perceived as vital on the post construction box sections of my Maj Maj special some 15 yeas later
