Jaguar XKR project this week: I finally managed to hammer off the front brake disc, it was well and truly stuck on there! and I clean up the inner wheel arch rust!
Congratulations on your success in removing the disc. Hopefully it will work for the others too. The rear ones are still more difficult because of the brake shoes. I'm crossing my fingers. 🙏🇬🇧
Good tip for stuck disks is to put a bolt through the caliper carrier hole with a nut on the disk side. Tighten the nut so the bolt is forced against the disk which presses the disk off the hub.
Hi Simon, I needed to use penetrating oil to help remove the discs plus also warmed the disc with my blow lamp to allow it to expand which helped. On assembly using a small amount of copper grease is not a problem and you can always check the Run-Out of the disc by fitting the wheel nuts and checking with a DTI (should be below .002") before final assembly. Hi Dave, good to hear from you buddy. It was a definite struggle to get off, but we got there in the end. Hest would have definitely helped too, I just don't own a torch, something for the Christmas list I think 👍
I recommend loosening and turning the upper wishbone bolt a few time. They can stick in the subframe and that leads to a world of pain to remove if required. Dont ask me how I know.
Hi Tim, you sound like a man who has had a painful experience in that area 😃 I will take your advice and free those bolts up as I have heard of this problem before 👍
HI Simon you really need a copper mallet or a dead blow mallet for that job . Good luck hope theres nothing nasty . Re the underseal you can buy resin based stone chip . Just used it on the xk after a sill repair. Sets hard but tough and is paintable and dries very quickly. The old bitumen based stuff is so mucky and wax only seems ok for internal bits
Hi Simon, apologies that I haven’t watched your video right the way through from start to finish but have you checked for corrosion directly behind the aluminium cross member upstand, (pretty much half way between where you have been sanding), it’s the usual place where dirt and salt collects. Fingers crossed it’s ok .
Hi graeme, good to hear from you, buddy. I have had my fingers down in there, behind the shock tower, and cleaned out all the debris. I can not see any rot in there, just a bit of surface corrosion like the other bits in there. I've not seen the other side yet, so fingers crossed 😀
Hi Mark, It is a great little tool. Mine is an old black and decker, which I've had for years, but here is a similar one I have found on amazon for you 😀 amzn.to/49tjcNl
