Jaime's LAST Fly-In Ever ~ Contest Announcement??

Jaime's displeasure of flying into the major airshows (Sun 'n Fun and AirVenture Oshkosh) has grown over the years. Unfortunately this one may have pushed her over the edge. We avoid holding IFR on the way down to Lakeland by inching closer and then canceling to go VFR down low in the bumps for the final leg. The Lake Parker Air Traffic Controllers threw us a curveball with the Winter Haven bit and the main tower at Lakeland lost their communications temporarily. Finally, a slower Cessna that was told to go to the skinny runway slid over and landed in front of us causing me to try to point right a little in the flare in case he slowed rapidly.

OMG! These fly-in's are crazy. Flew in to an airshow as a passenger on a 172 and will never forget the ATC telling us to follow the Sherman instead of Stearman. My friend piolting was like, "There's a tank in the pattern?" Great job Kevin and Jamie!

Good ol' SkyKing. I loved that show when I was a kid (way back in the late 55's early 66's). My dad had an Aircoupe (I believe the Alon A-2, with the sliding-bubble canopy...like a flying Batmobile). That was fun! He had it staked out at the old (original) 'Tamiami Airport' in Miami/Dade County, FL. South side of the Tamiami Trail-8 Street (but has been FIU for many years now). I hope Jamie doesn't cave in to her fears, but overcomes them. Kevin is a very competent pilot; it appeared to me that the ACC's were on top of it all. If nothing else, couldn't Kevin have just flown out of all that mess for a few or so minutes; then come back when/if things were less hectic? Now about that whole radio going silent...that is a bit spooky. The must be some protocol for when that occurs.

Back in the early 80's, my wife and I were flying into a west coast fly-in in a V-tail in mixed traffic and it was pretty stressful. I was glad to have her along as she was a pretty good navigator and spotter. It is an amazing feeling of calm one feels sitting in a lawn chair on the ground after a difficult and stressful approach and landing especially when we were landing in tandem with another plane. Felt the very intense emotions that Jaime was experiencing and will show this video to my wife as I am sure she will relate to her. Thanks for sharing this video!

Actually the concept works well and could provide the FAA with ideas how to safely increase traffic into airports where air traffic controllers provide a more invasive service. VFR: see and be seen can work especially with more airplanes equipped with TCAS and ADS-B out. The event has an admirable safety record and moves traffic with minimal delays.

@valuedhumanoid6574
@valuedhumanoid6574 3 года назад
This just reaffirms my belief that eventually these mega fly-in events is going to have a very bad accident. When the controller is yelling "everyone on downwind turn to base right now" and repeats it four times...and then you have pilots like that bozo who slid over to occupy your runway added to the mix...yeah, that's no good. They need a much better arrival system. Like an IRF autopilot required approach. Something.

So many working their butts off for a great fly in so go in a day or two earlier and leave later and thoroughly brief NOTAMS and local procedures, May sound obvious on the brief but reference EAA article on those not familiar with arrival procedures.

@@valuedhumanoid6574 Yeah, it is almost as bad as driving everyday to and from work on a busy freeway where there are "very bad accidents" frequently caused by stupid people driving too fast, following too closely and lane changing....At least the controllers and pilots (for the most part) have some training.
@ParadigmUnkn0wn
@ParadigmUnkn0wn 3 года назад
@@sgd5k292, you think the cattle auctioneer that cutoff the other controller to say, "Everybody on extended downwind turn base. *short pause* EVERYONE turn base!" had very much training? He then cut in again to basically threaten pilots to keep flying based on his crazy instructions or they'd go into holding. Most of those accidents you see on the highway aren't fatal. Mid-air collisions are universally fatal unless you have: you have an ejection seat, a parachute, or your plane has a parachute. Even with any (or all) of those things, a midair collisions still have abysmally high fatality rates. Not to mention the people on the ground. I've seen Oshkosh arrival videos that looked very safe. The requirement to get inline far out and the well-defined route, altitudes, and holding patterns all work very well. They have multiple spotting stations and frequencies. Their controllers don't cut into each others transmissions unless it's an emergency. This was a failure on all levels.

Jaime, I’m with you on the Fly Ins. The arrival ATC sounded more like a cattle auction and ATC chaos than safe air travel. I’ve flown for over 40 years and avoid these events because of the safety roulette played in the pattern. We fly somewhere close out of the chaos and drive to the event. Just too risky for us and you are fortunate to have a husband who is an excellent pilot and controller who knows the ins and outs of these events. Kevin, in your expert opinion as a controller, was that arrival safe? Jamie, see you at the alternate airport or on the highways for the next fly in. Hang in there, you’re not alone.
@FlightChops

I watched this one earlier today and have been reflecting on it. The impression that I am left with is that this was not safe ATC work, and as much as I know everyone wants to get there, sometimes a pilot needs to just cut their losses and nope the heck out.

@@FlightChops I concur, completely unsafe, regardless of your level of experience. The whole deal was a roll of the 🎲🎲. What amazes me is that the FAA allows it. Geez. I really feel for Jaime. That approach really freaked her out. I could feel the tension as she grabbed her belt. :-(

Kevin is such a brilliant aviator it’s always a pleasure watching him fly, Jaime is a fantastic right hand lady with a cool sense of humour, but this was hairy! Kevin is so cool you can see he loves the challenge, the jockeying for position and showing his flying skills, Jaime is being taken to the limit and I can see a plan B for next year as Kevin doesn’t want to lose such an able fellow aviator. Keep flying, keep safe and best wishes from England.

Can't fault Jamie. Always WAY easier when your the one flying. Flying into OSH after the 1sr two times we had had enough of the crazy stuff and started flying in on Thursdays to avoid this stress. Have been there 15 times now and its fantastic each time. Love the 310, we had a 1955 and our latest a 1969 310P very similar to this 73 Q. Thanks for sharing!

Nice way to handle the landing. I was once in the position of the people in the Cessna in front of you. I flew in to Oshgosh in the mid 1980's with my bro in law in his 1962 Cessna 150. We had been directed to 36R and just before turning final the tower came on the old 'squawk box' radio in the panel, talking to us; "Pick it up a little. You've got a twin on your tail." The old 150's had no rear window, I couldn't even turn around to look for the twin. I heard my bro inlaw say, "I'm peddling as fast as I can!" This was long before the 'dots' on the runway. My bro in law flew it more than half-way down the runway before flaring to land. We got to the end of the runway and still had a tail on the airplane so we figured we made it.

Amazing, adrenaline-fueled approach. Love how you both worked together for the situational awareness. I understand, Jamie, why you want to drive to Oshkosh, but, Kevin, do you really want to fly in there without that extra set of eyes, not to mention those professional radio skills?

Andy here from Durban South Africa. Love love love your channel. A few years ago I followed 1 of my 2 life goals to become a yacht skipper. Followed RU-vid channels and finally achieved it in 2017, and sailed the Adriatic and East Africa in 2018. Now Dream 2....learn to fly. Your channel is one of my top 3. Been to Oshkosh already. Next step PPL.

Though I've never been in that specific type of stressful situation its a perfect example of 2 people, 2 different reactions and a lot of stress. Actually even with Jamie's reaction she was still in the game, I know some people that would've froze at that point but good on her to fight through it. That was a wild ride at the end! Take care!

OMG, I've so many mixed emotions. First, I could see the distress in Jaime's face and... I got it: it was real. Ya'all make such a great team! However, it is what it is and her feelings has to be respected and accepted. Notwithstanding, as usual, you two made a great video! At least she said she''ll be driving there in the future which means she likes all the rest: just not the chaos of flying there. I'm a former Patco/rehired/Natca/private multi-engine pilot who's now a retired controller. One of my dreams was to control at Oshkosh. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED hearing the controllers, watching your response to the constantly evolving situations, Jaime not folding, but finding the strength/courage to continue trying to help... just awesome performance by both of you! This video should be watched by all: those seeking aviation/student pilots/instructors/established professional aviators, the FAA and finally, air traffic controllers. There's something for everyone to critique, learn from and teach or just enjoy! When it was 1st created: the CAA/FAA, one of it mandates was to promote aviation. I feel so proud to see you and Jaime as wonderful ambassadors to that endeavor. Be proud, be safe and continue with your wonderful videos. TN (my operating initials). (tee hee)😊😍😂👍

He was trying to lighten the mood with humor. It's a bold strategy; sometimes it works, sometimes you get the "I'm gonna kill you" look. In this case it appeared to be mildly successful.
