I cannot believe how this race wasn't promoted more...or at all. Surely, the fact that some chap was trying to run two consecutive sub-4 minute miles and break a 20 odd year old record is worth a bit of media coverage in the build up to the attempt. The BBC coverage was dreadful. It should have been the highlight of the meet but the BBC only showed a brief "highlights of the race" clip. Ridiculous!

I just don't get it.. I mean.. See it from the event holders point of view.. You wont get the world lead distance runner, who's the reigning Olympic champ on the 1500's & world champ on the 5 K to to show up on your event for free (Golden league or not), yet alone go for a WR deemed impossible. Logically, the whole purpose of making that kind of an investment, is gaining as much profit as possible from it. And for that to happen, the 'star event' is the one to promote, as well as ensure gets the TV coverage! These guys, on the other hand, appear to have managed to put their biggest star in a side-event.. This just don't make any sense, what so ever!

I've heard people say numerous times that Komen's 7:58.61 was a "soft" record. Really? No one (many great runners including Geb) ever came close to it, or really to 8 minutes (Geb closest at 8:01, also more than 20 years ago). But what makes this record so astonishing is how far ahead of all the other world class runners Jakob was. What that says to me is that he is in a class alone.

@@BakangSerame really? Komen had two pacers in his race but no wavelight technology, nor the added performance advantage of a bouncy Mondo track or carbon shoes. The latter by the way, can be a second per lap for an efficient runner like Jakob.

@@BakangSerame If it is a soft record then why were the other world class runners so far behind him, and why has no one else other than Komen ever broke 8 minutes? The only other records that look harder to me are Komen's 7:20.67 for 3000m and maybe El Geroujj's 3:26.00 for 1500?

@@zbigniewczaykowski514That's an average pace. Which is still ridiculously fast, although his fastest mile split was 3:53 on the 2nd mile.

Munguti a top class pacing job in this race. Very important. As I recall, Komen ran much of his last mile alone, though I'm not sure how many laps.

he ran 7.24 flat on the 3k without the big push he did on the last 200m of the 3 mile. Worldrecord is 7.20.67. He would be able to beat that official record too if he wants!!

Beats Mo Farah's European record by 13 seconds, smashes a quarter century old World mark by Komen, and leaves a world class field behind like high schoolers. Clearly the best performance in the history of Athletics.....by quite a margin.

It's very late here and with very small eyes after busy 48 hours with zero sleep. So maybe it's between the lines but too tired to do research - so could the caption be changed so it includes the VENUE? Where are we? Edit: Sorry, I AM tired. Just read Diamond League 2023 PARIS on the banners. To me the record is insane. Haven't followed 2 miles elite men since Haile Gebresselassie was close hitting the 8 min mark. Time flies. Congrats to Ingebretsen, what an effort.

Average lap time comparison between 3k WR. 3000m: 58,75s (Daniel Komen 1996, 7:20.67 - 7,5 laps) Two miles: 58,92s (7:54.10 - 8.047 laps). Would be 7:21.90 3k at this pace
