I’d never appreciated what a fantastic colour match Kirkby and Orlinski are. Emma Kirkby’s agility far exceeds most singers half her age. Great performance.

Delighted to see the great soprano Dame Emma Kirkby gain recognition at the Gramophone Awards 2019, with Jozef Orlinski as a worthy partner here. Of course, this cantata is entirely based on Pergolesi's hauntingly beautiful and unique "Stabat Mater Dolorosa". The fact that Bach hardly changed a thing shows that even one of the greatest composers in history could acknowledge where another composer had surpassed him. I believe Kirkby has sung "Stabat Mater" with James Bowman. Great performance here!

Back in the 1970's Emma Kirkby was breath of fresh air for those of us that found powerful vibrato driven sopranos quite frankly a turn off! Her voice instinctively sounded right in the early music movement, she guided me and I suspect many others into the joys of Baroque and classical repertory.

Cecilia is not a genuine baroque specialist. Emma must be one of the best ever baroque sopranos; there are some I like/have liked just as much as her, but it is a physical impossibility to sing baroque music better than her. Edit, a lot later... There is a great baroque soprano with a criminally inadequate following, (myself included until recently!), called Angharad Gruffydd Jones. If you want to be dumbstruck by the beauty and the greatness of human evolution, listen to Angharad.

It's not a "parody"!!!! Do you know what a "parody" is? Bach's inspiration came from every aspect of his life. Like his love of his family. Much of his work was primarily intended, or also intended, to challenge the skills of his sons. Bach was so impressed by Pergolesi's monumental creation tha he applied a little of his science to it. I am not a musician of any degree, but by paying attention to what I hear and avoiding trying to use polliciellabelsz, erm paulisilabells, (oh crap!), "big words" I don't understand I can detect and discuss with knowledgeable friends the differences between versions and interpretations of the same original music. Try paying attention: it's a grreat antidote to ignorance.

Well it's Bach using this splendid music from Pergolesi , true. This was done a lot in those days. You could say that Bach recognized the genius of Pergolesi's music and reworked it, putting it to use in his own way.

Dame Emma Kirkby is an Early Music megastar from England who has helped many young singers over the years. She has brought pleasure to millions. Old women like this one should be revered - and they are by those in the know!
