Featuring stop-motion animation and live action, this inventive adaptation of Roald Dahl's beloved children's tale follows the adventures of James (Paul Terry), an orphaned young British boy. Forced to live with his cruel aunts (Joanna Lumley, Miriam Margolyes), James finds a way out of his bleak existence when he discovers an enormous enchanted peach. After rolling into the sea inside the buoyant fruit, James, accompanied by a crew of friendly talking insects, sets sail for New York City.

Tim Burton and Roald Dahl are a match made in heaven. Both of them have the ability to jump between way too dark for kids, and unbelievably wholesome in a heartbeat.

Roald Dahl is the definition of ‘Get you a guy who can do both’. He wrote some wholesome stories (albeit with dark elements) and some really darkly comic stories. P.S. Did you know he briefly collaborated with Cadbury as a taster while in school?

I recently rewatched this movie, myself. I have a theory regarding the rhino that James was afraid of all this time. In a novelization of the movie that I remember reading, the mentioning of the rhino killing James’s parents was immediately followed by this very telling line: “…at least, that’s what his Aunts told him.” That, in combination with James’s declaration that the rhino is “just a lot of smoke and noise” leads me to believe that the rhino is nothing more than a manifestation of James’s fears, inspired by a lie his aunts told him to keep him too scared to try leaving them. 🤔 In truth, James’s parents probably died in an accident, or maybe the aunts killed them!

This is one of my favorite Stop-Motion films and also the most frightening Stop-Motion film I watched when I watched this as a kid. Interestingly, this film was my first stop motion film I watched, prior before watching _"The Nightmare Before Christmas"_ and the funny thing is at the time when I first watched this film It didn't occurred to me that the Pirate Captain that kidnapped Mr. Centipede was Jack Skellington, so when I re-watched the film for the second time years after seeing _The Nightmare Before Christmas_ and I said to myself, _"Hey that Pirate Captain looks like Jack Skellington._ Even Jack Skellington wasn't the only Disney cameo, cause Donald Duck himself also appears in this film as a Skeleton Pirate. On top of that, it didn't occurred to me that the voice of the Earthworm was David Thewlis better known as Professor Lupin in the _Harry Potter_ movies andSir Patrick Morgan / Ares in _Wonder Woman_ Finally, this film was my introduction to Roald Dahl, however when I was a Kid when I first watched _James and the Giant Peach_ I wasn't to familiar with Roald Dahl nor did I realize that this along with the film adaptations of _Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, The Witches_ from 1990 (starring Angelica Huston) and _Matilda_ were also books and also by the author, Roald Dahl. So it wasn't until the 3rd/4th grade during Elementary School years later when our class read The BFG and James and the Giant Peach where I became familiar with Roald Dahl as an author and that both Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, James And the Giant Peach, The BFG, The Witches, The Twits, Fantastic Mr. Fox and his various children's books he's written were done by the same person. Thanks for the reaction TimotheeReacts.🍑🦗🕷🐞🪱🐛

@@strawberrysoulforever8336 I know that, but as I said if you looked at my paragraph, I wasn't aware that both Janes and the Giant Peach, Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory (based on the book Charlie & the Chocolate Factory), and Matilda and The Witches from 1990, were based on books and by the same author Roald Dahl and I didn't became familiar with the author until I was in the 3rd Grade/4th Grade during Elementary School.

While I found the skeleton pirates very imaginative (I saw this before Nightmare Before Christmas, so I had no idea the captain was played by Jack Skellington) I wish the Cloud Men from the book were in it. They throw hailstones at the peach and then trap it with a rainbow. They even pour rainbow paint on centipede which hardens like cement; they all manage to escape after a cloud rains on them which washes away the rainbow.

Ironically, I think aunt sponge and aunt Spiker are my favorite villains in terms of evilness. And these two actresses played them so dang perfectly. Also, I noticed that a lot of reactors are still very confused on the rhino aspect. It wasn’t even explain side the book, but honestly, the truth is that both of the aunties killed the parents, and used James as their own slave, and then told a made up story so he would forever be feared. Which is why it’s so outrageous that an animal that is a vegetarian who can’t fly, ate his parents.

I watched this movie as a kid but I never read the book. Apparently the death of James’ parents was way more darker and brutal in the book than in the movie.
@strawberrysoulforever8336
@strawberrysoulforever8336 Год назад
The first meeting with the bugs was a lot better in the book. A few of them mention how they were waiting for James to show up, then they all started talking about how hungry they were for no apparent reason, until they realized James thought they meant they were going to eat him and they all laughed and explained that they saw him as one of the group. Also, the ending where the narrator says that the movie was granting James' wish to share his story. In the book, James wrote it all down and you'd just finished reading what he wrote. Roald Dahl reused this ending again in The BFG. He wanted to write a book after he learned to speak and write in perfect grammar (for those of you who haven't read it, he had a lot of trouble with speaking correctly, but he'd taught himself to read and write), but he was too modest to put his real name on it, and you've just finished reading it.

The reason it reminds you a little of Willy Wonka is because the stories were both written by Roald Dahl 😊 In the book I believe it was simply a rhino that had escaped from the zoo which ran his parents down one day 🤔 someone correct me if I’m wrong.
@EChacon

Yes you were correct, in the original book it was an actual Rhino that escaped from the Zoo and killed James Parents, while in the film it was a large monstrous black cloud in the form of a Rhino that ate James Parents.

You know... Everyone pokes fun at Disney for the tragedies that happen in them, but everyone seems to forget that most of Disney's works are based off of other stories. So the stories like Cinderella, Bambi, James and the Giant peach? They actually had deaths in them (often those stories were also more brutal than their movie counterparts) In the book the rhino escaped from the zoo and trampled the parents, but I understand making it a supernatural type of creature for a young child.

The rhinoceros thing i think symbolises the war in that time. I once saw a play called Jurassica in Melbourne and their was a character who was an old Italian grandfather and he would tell his grandson a story about hearing what he thought were dinosaurs stomping past his window one night. He was only a little kid when this happened and throughout the play they kept referring to that dream (and sometimes Jurassic Park) and afterwards when we studied the play for drama class, we realised that he was really talking about the night his country was invaded in WWII; the stomping was the German army but he started referring to the sound as dinosaurs. So the rhinoceros was probably a similar metaphor, or perhaps a storm that killed them in which the thunder sounded like a rhinoceros. 'Cause after all, rhinos are vegetarian, how could they eat his parents??? Plus i think the whole film is James' representation of finally getting away from his aunts. You notice that when he draws the picture in the attic, he draws the waves really slopey and that's what the waves look like when they're in the ocean. And the shark could symbolise the aunts chasing after him via a boat or something. Lots of ways to look at this film

Which Roald Dahl book adaptation should we see next on this channel? Esio Trot (TV movie)? Danny Champion of the world (TV movie)? Fantastic Mr Fox? The BFG animated? The BFG live action? The Witches (90s movie)? The Witches (2020 movie)? I know Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is due in a month or so

I remember this movie fondly. My mom and I enjoyed a particularly giant peach and we planted the pit growing out own peach tree, though it didn't get too big and grew a few strawberry sized peaches. Also don't diss my fav "bug" Miss Spider, she's cool.

I think that the bugs were people that got reincarnated and got more like their old selves when that magic happened
